Prospects for Ductility and Toughness Enhancement of Nial by Ductile Phase Reinforcement
The use of NiAl as a structural material has been hindered by the fact that this ordered intermetallic does not exhibit significant tensile ductility or toughness at room temperature. A critical review of the operative flow and fracture mechanisms in monolithic NiAl has thus established the need for ductile phase toughening in this order system. Progress in ductile phase reinforced intermetallic systems in general and specifically NiAl-based materials has been reviewed. In addition, further clarification of the primary mechanisms involved in the flow and fracture of ductile phase reinforced alloys has evolved from ongoing investigations of several model NiAl-based materials. The mechanical behavior of these model directionally-solidified alloys (Ni-30Al and Ni-30Fe-20Al) are discussed. Finally, the prospects for developing a ductile phase toughened NiAl-based alloy and the shortcomings presently inherent in these systems are analyzed
Optical Observations and Multiband Modelling of the Afterglow of GRB 041006: Evidence of A Hard Electron Energy Spectrum
We present the CCD Cousins R band photometric observations of the afterglow
of GRB 041006. The multiband afterglow evolution is modelled using an
underlying `hard' electron energy spectrum with a . The burst
appears to be of very low energy ( ergs) confined to a narrow
cone of opening angle . The associated supernova is
compared with SN1998bw and is found to be brighter.Comment: Accepted for publication in Bull. Astr. Soc. India (BASI
Ferromagnetic relaxation by magnon-induced currents
A theory for calculating spin wave relaxation times based on the
magnon-electron interaction is developed. The theory incorporates a thin film
geometry and is valid for a large range of magnon frequencies and wave vectors.
For high conductivity metals such as permalloy, the wave vector dependent
damping constant approaches values as high as 0.2, showing the large magnitude
of the effect, and can dominate experimentally observed relaxation.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Gluon Condensates, Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Pion Wave Function
We consider here chiral symmetry breaking in quantum chromodynamics arising
from gluon condensates in vacuum. Through coherent states of gluons simulating
a mean field type of approximation, we show that the off-shell gluon
condensates of vacuum generate a mass-like contribution for the quarks, giving
rise to chiral symmetry breaking. We next note that spontaneous breaking of
global chiral symmetry links the four component quark field operator to the
pion wave function. This in turn yields many hadronic properties in the light
quark sector in agreement with experiments, leading to the conclusion that low
energy hadron properties are primarily driven by the vacuum structure of
quantum chromodynamics.Comment: 25 pages, IP/BBSR/92-76, revte
Mean field and Monte Carlo studies of the magnetization-reversal transition in the Ising model
Detailed mean field and Monte Carlo studies of the dynamic
magnetization-reversal transition in the Ising model in its ordered phase under
a competing external magnetic field of finite duration have been presented
here. Approximate analytical treatment of the mean field equations of motion
shows the existence of diverging length and time scales across this dynamic
transition phase boundary. These are also supported by numerical solutions of
the complete mean field equations of motion and the Monte Carlo study of the
system evolving under Glauber dynamics in both two and three dimensions.
Classical nucleation theory predicts different mechanisms of domain growth in
two regimes marked by the strength of the external field, and the nature of the
Monte Carlo phase boundary can be comprehended satisfactorily using the theory.
The order of the transition changes from a continuous to a discontinuous one as
one crosses over from coalescence regime (stronger field) to nucleation regime
(weaker field). Finite size scaling theory can be applied in the coalescence
regime, where the best fit estimates of the critical exponents are obtained for
two and three dimensions.Comment: 16 pages latex, 13 ps figures, typos corrected, references adde
Quantum Information and Entropy
Thermodynamic entropy is not an entirely satisfactory measure of information
of a quantum state. This entropy for an unknown pure state is zero, although
repeated measurements on copies of such a pure state do communicate
information. In view of this, we propose a new measure for the informational
entropy of a quantum state that includes information in the pure states and the
thermodynamic entropy. The origin of information is explained in terms of an
interplay between unitary and non-unitary evolution. Such complementarity is
also at the basis of the so-called interaction-free measurement.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure
