    A Study of Partial Discharge Characteristics in High Voltage Insulators

    Insulators are the integral part of the high voltage power equipment. Several types of insulators are used in high voltage electrical power system to protect the power equipment. For the purpose of safety and better efficiency, it is necessary to keep the insulators in a healthy condition during its operation. As the insulators are always in impure form due to presence of air bubbles/other impurities inside the insulators, the local electrical breakdown so called partial discharge (PD) takes place due to the high voltage tresses. Due to this, PD occurs and property of insulators deteriorates enormously. Therefore, detection of PD is the one of the important task for electrical engineers to keep the high voltage power equipment in healthy condition. In this work, an electrical circuit model of an epoxy resin (i.e., an insulator) with a cubical void (air bubble) as an impurity is taken for realization of actual PD activity inside the insulator with the application of high voltage using MATLAB Simulink environment. In this study, the maximum amplitude of PD, partial discharge pulses at different applied voltages, and amplitude of PD with frequency is studied

    Guiding principles and practices of peace education followed in secondary schools of Mizoram

    The significance of peace education is universally recognized for a safe and prospering future for the world at school level as peace education aims at equipping the future citizens with necessary knowledge, attitude and skills so that they would acknowledge and respect all kinds of diversity and understand human dignity. This paper is based on an empirical research aiming how far guiding principles and practices of peace education followed in secondary schools of Mizoram. The concept of peace education, guiding principles of peace education and practices on peace-related activities being followed in the secondary schools of Mizoram were explored. The study revealed that peace education was not being taught as a separate subject. Peace education component was infused in the existing curriculum and also was being taught through co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Besides, teachers must reflect in their behavior all the guiding principles of peace. They should encourage the students for critical thinking, reasoning, develop awareness on societal problems and issues, broaden their outlook, concentrate on studies, and to be associated with various activities. In Mizoram, students’ unions and church organizations used to play a prominent role in shaping and moulding the character of the people starting from the early stage of life which ultimately benefits the society and the nation. However, in the context of rapid change in social structure and modernization process, there is need for inculcating the values of peace for which schools have to play important role

    Food Security and Nutritional Status among Rural Poor: Evaluating the Impact of Rural Livelihood Mission in Odisha, India

    This paper empirically examines the effect of participation in National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) on the food security of rural poor. In parallel, it also introspects the nutritional profiles of the respondents. Data were collected from 220 respondents (including both beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries) through a structured questionnaire from Sonepur district of Odisha (India). For assessing the nutritional profile, the study uses 24 hour recall and food frequency questionnaire methods to collect the information on food consumption. Then food items were converted into their equivalent calories. A food security index (FSI) was constructed to capture the food security taking the average calories of food consumed by the respondents. The study finds a better food consumption pattern among beneficiaries than the non-beneficiaries. Further, the impact of NRLM is examined using randomised control trial method and finds a positive impact of the programme on the food security. That means, participation in the programme helps the beneficiaries to attain food security. Therefore, participation should be encouraged to mitigate the food insecurity problem

    Incisional hernia as a late surgical complication of an infertile patient treated for abdominal tuberculosis

    Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) can be of various forms including peritoneal TB, tuberculous lymphadenopathy, gastrointestinal TB and visceral TB. The potential pathway includes direct spread to the peritoneum from infected adjacent foci, including the fallopian tubes or adnexa, or psoas abscess, secondary to tuberculous spondylitis. The exact stimulus for the inflammatory reaction is not known, but some suggest that it may arise due to a subclinical primary viral peritonitis, as an immunological reaction to gynaecological infections, or due to retrograde menstruation. The diagnosis of extra pulmonary TB can be difficult as it presents with nonspecific clinical and radiological features and requires high degree of suspicion for diagnosis. The abdominal TB, which is not so commonly seen as pulmonary TB, can be a source of significant morbidity and mortality and is usually diagnosed late due to its nonspecific clinical presentation. Approximately 15%-25% of cases with abdominal TB have concomitant pulmonary TB. Hence, it is quite important in identifying these lesions with high index of suspicion especially in endemic areas. Post – operative period in such patients is not smooth. They include prolonged hospital stay, enterocutaneous fistulae requiring re-operation upon failed conservative management, mortality associated with re-exploration, late complication being incisional hernia. Here we report a case of large incisional hernia following a laparotomy performed for non-resolving sub-acute intestinal obstruction which turned out to have tubercular origin later. The present case was managed by meshplasty using component separation technique (CST)

    Adult diagnosis of hyperlucent unilateral lung: Swyer-James Macleod syndrome

    Swyer- James- MacLeod Syndrome (SJMS) is a constrictive bronchiolitis with airflow obstruction, decreased number and diameter of ipsilateral peripheral pulmonary vessels and air trapping with characteristic radiological feature of unilateral hyperlucency on chest radiography. Computerized tomography (CT) provides useful additional information. The diagnosis is usually made in childhood, but sometimes it in adult. Here, we report a case in a 36 year old adult female who presented with complaints of breathlessness on exertion, cough and recurrent rhinitis with past history of TB and child hood chest infection. Imaging findings are characteristic of Swyer- James- Macleod syndrome

    Rescuing the End-user systems from Vulnerable Applications using Virtualization Techniques

    In systems owned by normal end-users, many times security attacks are mounted by sneaking in malicious applications or exploiting existing software vulnerabilities through security non-conforming actions of users. Virtualization approaches can address this problem by providing a quarantine environment for applications, malicious devices, and device drivers, which are mostly used as entry points for security attacks. However, the existing methods to provide quarantine environments using virtualization are not transparent to the user, both in terms of application interface transparency and file system transparency. Further, software configuration level solutions like remote desktops and remote application access mechanisms combined with shared file systems do not meet the user transparency and security requirements. We propose qOS, a VM-based solution combined with certain OS extensions to meet the security requirements of end-point systems owned by normal users, in a transparent and efficient manner. We demonstrate the efficacy of qOS by empirically evaluating the prototype implementation in the Linux+KVM system in terms of efficiency, security, and user transparency.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

    In This Paper we present a real time domain obstacle detection system for the visually impaired persons to improve their mobility in daily life with the help of obstacle detection sensor installed in their walking stick .System is having a lower cost so it is easily purchasable so it can have a major significance in life of visually impaired persons. This Paper proposes a system to detect any object attached to the floor regardless to their height [1]. Obstacle on the floor in the front of user can be reliably detected in real time using the proposed system implemented by the IR sensor installed on the walk stick of the visually impaired person. Project also contains a navigation system for visually impaired persons to make the life of such persons easier up to some extent. This project is suited for the area where the possibility of blind person is high (like blind school, college)[6]. For transport facility of blind we have first decided the common bus roots of blind then we have placed RF tag to all those buses with unique code. At the second side we have placed RF reader, microcontroller and voice processor. The RF reader receive unique code, microcontroller process this code with defined code, if match found, voice processor get activated and starts speaking bus name, initial destination and final destination. The obstacle detection is also included in the project with voice. The system aims at increasing the mobility of visually impaired people by offering new sensing abilities

    Human health risk assessment of temporal and spatial variations of ground water quality at a densely industrialized commercial complex at Haridwar, India

    The observations of present investigation revealed that the groundwater regime at State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIDCUL) Industrial Estate (IE) was highly responsive to the anthropogenic stress of recharge and discharge parameters concerning the distressing industrial activities. The present study on groundwater characteristics of SIDCUL-IE, Haridwar in year 2013-2014 showed that the water of Sampling station-D (SSD) had relatively poor quality in comparison to the groundwater collected from Sampling station-A (SSA), Sampling station-B (SSB) and Sampling station-C (SSC). The samples had a high mineral load with relatively wider pH range. The physico-chemical parameters like pH (6.35 in October) at SSA, TDS (553.5 mg/l in November) at SSC, TH (600.0 mg/l in July) at SSB and alkalinity (525.0 mg/l in October) at SSD were beyond the prescribed limits of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The Karl Pearson correlation matrix showed moderate to significantly positive correlation between various parameters like COD-phosphorus (r=0.629), temperature-DO (r=-0.477) at SSA; pH and bicarbonate (r=0.668) at SSB; pH-temperature (r=-0.551),turbidity-BOD (r=0.467), BOD-phosphorus (r=0.518), bicarbonate-acidity (r=-0.833) at SSC and TSS-turbidity (r=0.616), BOD-COD (r=0.6771) at SSD and temperature-DO (r=-0.666), hardness-acidity (r=-0.6542) BOD-COD (r=0.654) at control site. The overall quality of groundwater, though hard, was found acceptable for drinking purpose. The divergence in the results of groundwater samples taken from SIDCUL-IE and the Control site, 2 km away from SIDCUL-IE, indicated that groundwater pollution is increasing alarmingly which may have serious threats to human health in near future
