Compact Stars - How Exotic Can They Be?
Strong interaction physics under extreme conditions of high temperature
and/or density is of central interest in modern nuclear physics for
experimentalists and theorists alike. In order to investigate such systems,
model approaches that include hadrons and quarks in a unified approach, will be
discussed. Special attention will be given to high-density matter as it occurs
in neutron stars. Given the current observational limits for neutron star
masses, the properties of hyperonic and hybrid stars will be determined. In
this context especially the question of the extent, to which exotic particles

Fermentation process for alcoholic beverage production from mahua (Madhuca indica J. F. Mel.) flowers
Mahua flowers are rich in sugar (68-72%), in addition to a number of minerals and one of the most important raw materials for alcohol fermentation. The present investigation was for the development of a non-distilled alcoholic beverage from Mahua flowers. Eighteen (18) treatment combinations consisting of two temperatures (25 and 30°C), three pH (4.0, 4.5 and 5.0) and three period of fermentation (7, 14 and 21 days) were used in the fermentation conditions. The maximum yield of ethanol (9.51 %) occurred at 25°C with pH 4.5 after 14 days of fermentation of Mahua flower juice. The fermented non-distilled alcoholic beverage contained total sugar (8.83 mg/ml), reducing sugar (0.82 mg/ml), total soluble solids (6.37°Brix) titrable acidity (0.65 %), and volatile acidity (0.086%). Methanol was not detected at any stage of fermentation. Seasonal effect and long-term nutritional status following exit from a Community-Based Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition program in Bihar, India.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Children aged 6 months to 5 years completing treatment for severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in a Médecins Sans Frontières Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) program in Bihar, India, showed high cure rates; however, the program suffered default rates of 38%. This report describes the nutritional status of 1956 children followed up between 3 and 18 months after exiting the program. SUBJECTS/METHODS: All children aged 6-59 months discharged as cured with mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) ⩾120 mm or who defaulted from the program with MUAC <115 mm were traced at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months (±10 days) before three exit reference dates: first at the end of the food insecure period, second after the 2-month food security and third after the 4-month food security. RESULTS: Overall, 68.7% (n=692) of defaulters and 76.2% (n=1264) of children discharged as cured were traced. Combined rates of non-recovery in children who defaulted with MUAC <115 mm were 41%, 30.1%, 9.9%, 6.1% and 3.6% at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months following exit, respectively. Combined rates of relapse among cured cases (MUAC ⩾120 mm) were 9.1%, 2.9%, 2.1%, 2.8% and 0% at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months following discharge, respectively. Prevalence of undernutrition increased substantially for both groups traced during low food security periods. Odds of death were much higher for children defaulting with MUAC <110 mm when compared with children discharged as cured, who shared the same mortality risk as those defaulting with MUAC 110-<115 mm. CONCLUSIONS: Seasonal food security predicted short-term nutritional status after exit, with relapse rates and non-recovery from SAM much higher during food insecurity. Mortality outcomes suggest that a MUAC of 110 mm may be considered an appropriate admission point for SAM treatment programs in this context
Development of a Yoga Program for Type-2 Diabetes Prevention (YOGA-DP) Among High-Risk People in India
Introduction: Many Indians are at high-risk of type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Yoga is
an ancient Indian mind-body discipline, that has been associated with improved glucose
levels and can help to prevent T2DM. The study aimed to systematically develop a
Yoga program for T2DM prevention (YOGA-DP) among high-risk people in India using a
complex intervention development approach. /
Materials and Methods: As part of the intervention, we developed a booklet and a
high-definition video for participants and a manual for YOGA-DP instructors. A systematic
iterative process was followed to develop the intervention and included five steps: (i) a
systematic review of the literature to generate a list of Yogic practices that improves
blood glucose levels among adults at high-risk of or with T2DM, (ii) validation of identified
Yogic practices by Yoga experts, (iii) development of the intervention, (iv) consultation with
Yoga, exercise, physical activity, diet, behavior change, and/or diabetes experts about
the intervention, and (v) pretest the intervention among Yoga practitioners and lay people
(those at risk of T2DM and had not practiced Yoga before) in India. /
Results: YOGA-DP is a structured lifestyle education and exercise program, provided
over a period of 24 weeks. The exercise part is based on Yoga and includes Shithilikarana
Vyayama (loosening exercises), Surya Namaskar (sun salutation exercises), Asana
(Yogic poses), Pranayama (breathing practices), and Dhyana (meditation) and relaxation
practices. Once participants complete the program, they are strongly encouraged to
maintain a healthy lifestyle in the long-term. /
Conclusions: We systematically developed a novel Yoga program for T2DM prevention
(YOGA-DP) among high-risk people in India. A multi-center feasibility randomized
controlled trial is in progress in India
Yoga programme for type-2 diabetes prevention (YOGA-DP) among high risk people in India: a multicentre feasibility randomised controlled trial protocol.
INTRODUCTION: A huge population in India is at high risk of type-2 diabetes (T2DM). Physical activity and a healthy diet (healthy lifestyle) improve blood glucose levels in people at high risk of T2DM. However, an unhealthy lifestyle is common among Indians. Yoga covers physical activity and a healthy diet and can help to prevent T2DM. The research question to be addressed by the main randomised controlled trial (RCT) is whether a Yoga programme for T2DM prevention (YOGA-DP) is effective in preventing T2DM among high risk people in India as compared with enhanced standard care. In this current study, we are determining the feasibility of undertaking the main RCT. INTERVENTION: YOGA-DP is a structured lifestyle education and exercise programme. The exercise part is based on Yoga and includes Shithilikarana Vyayama (loosening exercises), Surya Namaskar (sun salutation exercises), Asana (Yogic poses), Pranayama (breathing practices) and Dhyana (meditation) and relaxation practices. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a multicentre, two-arm, parallel-group, feasibility RCT with blinded outcome assessment and integrated mixed-methods process evaluation. Eligible participants should be aged 18-74 years, at high risk of T2DM (fasting plasma glucose level 5.6-6.9 mmol/L) and safe to participate in physical activities. At least 64 participants will be randomised to intervention or control group with final follow-up at 6 months. Important parameters, needed to design the main RCT, will be estimated, such as SD of the outcome measure (fasting plasma glucose level at 6-month follow-up), recruitment, intervention adherence, follow-up, potential contamination and time needed to conduct the study. Semistructured qualitative interviews will be conducted with up to 20-30 participants, a sample of those declining to participate, four YOGA-DP instructors and around eight study staff to explore their perceptions and experiences of taking part in the study and of the intervention, reasons behind non-participation, experiences of delivering the intervention and running the study, respectively. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval has been obtained from the following Research Ethics Committees: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Nottingham (UK); Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC, India); Bapu Nature Cure Hospital and Yogashram (BNCHY, India) and Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (S-VYASA, India). How to design a complex behaviour change intervention: experiences from a nutrition-sensitive agriculture trial in rural India
Many public health interventions aim to promote healthful
behaviours, with varying degrees of success. With a lack
of existing empirical evidence on the optimal number or
combination of behaviours to promote to achieve a given
health outcome, a key challenge in intervention design
lies in deciding what behaviours to prioritise, and how
best to promote them. We describe how key behaviours
were selected and promoted within a multisectoral
nutrition-sensitive agriculture intervention that aimed to
address maternal and child undernutrition in rural India.
First, we formulated a Theory of Change, which outlined
our hypothesised impact pathways. To do this, we used
the following inputs: existing conceptual frameworks,
published empirical evidence, a feasibility study, formative
research and the intervention team’s local knowledge.
Then, we selected specific behaviours to address within
each impact pathway, based on our formative research,
behaviour change models, local knowledge and community
feedback. As the intervention progressed, we mapped each
of the behaviours against our impact pathways and the
transtheoretical model of behaviour change, to monitor the
balance of behaviours across pathways and along stages
of behaviour change. By collectively agreeing on definitions
of complex concepts and hypothesised impact pathways,
implementing partners were able to communicate clearly
between each other and with intervention participants.
Our intervention was iteratively informed by continuous
review, by monitoring implementation against targets
and by integrating community feedback. Impact and
process evaluations will reveal whether these approaches
are effective for improving maternal and child nutrition,
and what the effects are on each hypothesised impact
pathway
Pontine capillary telangiectasia as visualized on MR imaging causing a clinical picture resembling basilar-type migraine: a case report
A case of presumed pontine capillary telangiectasia in an 18-year-old woman with a clinical diagnosis of basilar-type migraine is reported. Since both are very rare diagnoses, this case provides some evidence to suggest that pontine capillary telangiectasia might cause a clinical picture resembling basilar-type migraine
Dynamic Load Balancing for Massively Multiplayer Online Games Using OPNET
In recent years, there has been an important growth of online gaming. Today’s Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) can contain millions of synchronous players scattered across the world and participating with each other within a single shared game. Traditional Client/Server architectures of MMOGs exhibit different problems in scalability, reliability, and latency, as well as the cost of adding new servers when demand is too high. P2P architecture provides considerable support for scalability of MMOGs. It also achieves good response times by supporting direct connections between players. In this paper, we have proposed a novel dynamic load balancing for massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) based this hybrid Peer-to-Peer architecture. We have divided the game world space into several regions. Each region in the game world space is controlled and managed by using both a super-peer and a clone-super-peer. The region's super-peer is responsible for distributing the game update among the players inside the region, as well as managing the game communications between the players. However, the clone-super-peer is responsible for controlling the players' migration from one region to another, in addition to be the super-peer of the region when the super-peer leaves the game. We have designed and evaluated the dynamic load balancing for MMOGs based on hybrid P2P architecture. We have used OPNET Modeler 18.0 to simulate and evaluate the proposed system. Our dynamic load balancer is responsible for distributing the load among the regions in the game world space. The position of the load balancer is located between the game server and the regions. The results, following extensive experiments, show that low delay and higher traffic communication can be achieved using dynamic load balancing for MMOGs based on hybrid P2P system
Into the UV: The Atmosphere of the Hot Jupiter HAT-P-41b Revealed
For solar system objects, ultraviolet spectroscopy has been critical in identifying sources of stratospheric heating and measuring the abundances of a variety of hydrocarbon and sulfur-bearing species, produced via photochemical mechanisms, as well as oxygen and ozone. To date, fewer than 20 exoplanets have been probed in this critical wavelength range (0.2–0.4 μm). Here we use data from Hubble's newly implemented WFC3 UVIS G280 grism to probe the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-41b in the ultraviolet through optical in combination with observations at infrared wavelengths. We analyze and interpret HAT-P-41b's 0.2–5.0 μm transmission spectrum using a broad range of methodologies including multiple treatments of data systematics as well as comparisons with atmospheric forward, cloud microphysical, and multiple atmospheric retrieval models. Although some analysis and interpretation methods favor the presence of clouds or potentially a combination of Na, VO, AlO, and CrH to explain the ultraviolet through optical portions of HAT-P-41b's transmission spectrum, we find that the presence of a significant H− opacity provides the most robust explanation. We obtain a constraint for the abundance of H−, , in HAT-P-41b's atmosphere, which is several orders of magnitude larger than predictions from equilibrium chemistry for a ~1700–1950 K hot Jupiter. We show that a combination of photochemical and collisional processes on hot hydrogen-dominated exoplanets can readily supply the necessary amount of H− and suggest that such processes are at work in HAT-P-41b and the atmospheres of many other hot Jupiters
