    What is Systems Analysis?

    Get PDF
The well-informed citizen of our time is concerned about the problems of society, and he feels that, somehow or other, science and technology should aid in solving them. On the one hand, his view of science is probably conditioned by the artifacts that technology has produced--air and space craft, automobiles, radio and television, electrical appliances, pocket computers, large technical enterprises and their products; on the other, he is also aware of the unhappy effects of some of this technology--air and water pollution, environmental threats from pesticides and fertilizers, chemical carcinogens. This new technology has been accompanied by marked changes in social and economic systems, and they have been accompanied by undesirable dislocations and unfortunate effects. In the face of this conflicting picture of the desirable and the undesirable, society expects science and technology to playa constructive role in improving the lot of mankind. How can this expectation be met

Handbook of Systems Analysis: Volume 1. Overview. Front Matter

    Get PDF
The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis is preparing a Handbook of Systems Analysis, which will appear in three volumes: Volume 1: Overview is aimed at a widely varied audience of producers and users of systems analysis studies. Volume 2: Methods is aimed at systems analysts who need basic knowledge of methods in which they are not expert; this volume contains introductory overviews of such methods. Volume 3: cases contains descriptions of actual systems analyses that illustrate the diversity of the contexts and methods of systems analysis. Drafts of the material for Volume 1 are being widely circulated for comment and suggested improvement. This Working Paper is the current draft of the front matter for this volume. Correspondence is invited, and should be addressed to the undersigned

A Comparative Study of the Spiracle in \u3cem\u3eCyclostomata, Elasmobranchii\u3c/em\u3e and \u3cem\u3ePisces\u3c/em\u3e

(From the Introduction) Although scientists have been interested in the spiracle for a number of years, very little investigation has been done. In this study the writer shall endeavor to describe the structures and functions of the spiracle in the Cyclostomes, Elasmobranchs and Pisces as well as show the continuous development of any structure as to its function in the animals studied

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis is preparing a Handbook of Systems Analysis, which will appear in three volumes: Volume 1: Overview is aimed at a widely varied audience of producers and users of systems analysis studies. Volume 2: Methods is aimed at systems analysts and other members of systems analysis teams who need basic knowledge of methods in which they are not expert; this volume contains introductory overviews of such methods. Volume 3: Cases contains descriptions of actual systems analyses that illustrate the diversity of the contexts and methods of systems analysis. Drafts of the material for Volume 1 are being widely circulated for comment and suggested improvement. This Working Paper is the current draft of Chapter 1. Correspondence is invited. Volume 1 will consist of the following ten chapters: 1. The context, nature, and use of systems analysis 2. The genesis of applied systems analysis; 3. Examples of applied systems analysis 4. The methods of applied systems analysis: An introduction and overview 5. Formulating problems for systems analysis 6. Objectives, constraints, and alternatives 7. Predicting the consequences: Models and modeling 8. Guidance for decision 9. Implementation 10. The practice of applied systems analysis To these ten chapters will be added a glossary of systems analysis terms and a bibliography of basic works in the field

The Myth of Endless Accumulation: A Feminist Inquiry Into Globalization, Growth, and Social Change

    Get PDF
This theoretical dissertation examines the concept of growth and its core assumption—that the continual accumulation of wealth is both socially wise and ecologically sustainable. The study challenges and offers alternatives to the myth of endless accumulation, suggesting new directions for leadership and social change. The central question posed in this inquiry: Can we craft a more ethical form of capitalism? To answer this question, the study examines conventional and critical globalization studies; feminist scholarship on standpoint, political economy, and power; and the Enlightenment notions of progress and modernism, drawing on a number of works, including Aristotle on the three intelligences, Thomas Aquinas on human need and value, and Karl Marx on capitalism. From this broad disciplinary and historical perspective, a compelling narrative emerges, one that describes how the idea of growth has intersected with power and privilege to create an overarching global imperative that threatens the viability of our species and planet. The closing sections explore potential responses to that threat, introducing consciousness, wisdom, and caring to our understanding of growth, and emphasizing the importance of relational practice to effect real social and institutional change. Design of a Wide-Swing Cascode Beta Multiplier Current Reference

This thesis presents a study of the design of a wide-swing, cascode β multiplier current reference to be used as a biasing circuit. The current reference has been fabricated in a 0.5mm CMOS technology. First, a review of wide-swing cascode current mirrors and current-source self-biasing is covered. Then, the process of designing a current reference that is both wide-swing and has high output resistance is presented. Simulation and measurement results from the current reference are detailed. Improvements upon the current reference are also suggested
