    Trajectories across the healthy adult lifespan on sense of direction, spatial anxiety, and attitude in exploring places

    Introduction: Self-evaluations about orientation and navigation in the environment contribute to individual differences in spatial cognition. Evidence suggests that they may change, even slightly, with the progression of adulthood. It is necessary to improve the framing of environment-related subjective self-evaluations in adulthood and aging by examining how they change and the factors related to them. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the developmental trajectories of sense of direction, spatial anxiety, and attitude in exploring place across the adult lifespan while also considering gender and education. Materials and methods: A sample of 1,946 participants (1,068 women), aged 18–87 years, completed the sense of direction and spatial representation, spatial anxiety, and attitude in exploring scales. Results: The regression models showed a linear increase in sense of direction with age, stable spatial anxiety until age 66 years when anxiety began increasing, and a stable attitude in exploring with a deflection by age 71 years. Gender played a role in all three types of self-evaluations, with men reporting higher ratings in sense of direction and attitude toward exploring (especially in older men), and lower levels of spatial anxiety than women did. Education also played a role, with higher education years associated with lower ratings in spatial anxiety and a higher sense of direction, nullifying gender differences in the latter. Discussion: These results offer, in the spatial cognition framework, a better understanding of how specific environment-related self-evaluations develop with age and related factors, such as education. This underscores the importance of enhancing them, particularly in women and older adults

    Investigating the different domains of environmental knowledge acquired from virtual navigation and their relationship to cognitive factors and wayfinding inclinations

    When learning an environment from virtual navigation people gain knowledge about landmarks, their locations, and the paths that connect them. The present study newly aimed to investigate all these domains of knowledge and how cognitive factors such as visuospatial abilities and wayfinding inclinations might support virtual passive navigation. A total of 270 participants (145 women) were tested online. They: (i) completed visuospatial tasks and answered questionnaires on their wayfinding inclinations; and (ii) learnt a virtual path. The environmental knowledge they gained was assessed on their free recall of landmarks, their egocentric and allocentric pointing accuracy (location knowledge), and their performance in route direction and landmark location tasks (path knowledge). Visuospatial abilities and wayfinding inclinations emerged as two separate factors, and environmental knowledge as a single factor. The SEM model showed that both visuospatial abilities and wayfinding inclinations support the environmental knowledge factor, with similar pattern of relationships in men and women. Overall, factors related to the individual are relevant to the environmental knowledge gained from an online virtual passive navigation

    Synthesis and characterization of magnetic and antibacterial nanoparticles as filler in acrylic cements for bone cancer and comorbidities therapy

    In this work an innovative formulation of bone cement for the treatment of bone tumor and its associated complications has been designed by preparing a new class of Fe3O4–Ag nanostructures, using gallic acid as a reducing agent. The obtained nanoparticles have been introduced in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-based composite cement evaluating the insertion of different amounts and the use of different mixing methods. The morphology, the composition and the antibacterial effect of Fe3O4–Ag nanostructures have been investigated together with the morphology, the composition, the mechanical properties of the nanoparticles-containing composite cements as well as their antibacterial effect. The obtained results revealed a good antimicrobial effect of Fe3O4–Ag nanostructures, a significant influence of their amount and of the used mixing method on the particles dispersion and agglomeration in the PMMA matrix and, as a result, on the mechanical properties. In particular, a better dispersion of nanoparticles was obtained by using the mechanical mixing, reducing the tendency to agglomerate. The increase of nanoparticles amount induced a slight decrease of the mechanical properties; however, the introduction of 10% w/w of Fe3O4–Ag allowed to improve the composites ability to reduce the bacteria adhesion

    Magneto-plasmonic heterodimers: Evaluation of different synthesis approaches

    Nanomedicine has gained huge attention in recent years with new approaches in medical diagnosis and therapy. Particular consideration has been devoted to the nanoparticles (NPs) in theranostic field with specific interest for magnetic and gold NPs (MNPs and GNPs) due to their peculiar properties under exposition to electromagnetic fields. In this paper, we aim to develop magneto-plasmonic heterodimer by combining MNPs and GNPs through a facile and reproducible synthesis and to investigate the influence of different synthesis parameters on their response to magnetic and optical stimuli. In particular, various syntheses were performed by changing the functionalization step and using or not a reducing agent to obtain stable NP suspensions with tailored properties. The obtained heterodimers were characterized through physical, chemical, optical, and magnetic analysis, in order to evaluate their size, shape, plasmonic properties, and superparamagnetic behavior. The results revealed that the shape and dimensions of the nanocomposites can be tuned by MNPs surface functionalization, as well as by the use of a reducing agent, giving rise to nanoplatform suitable for biomedical application, exploiting the gold absorbing peak in the specific gold absorbing range of GNPs, while maintaining the superparamagnetic behavior typical of the MNPs. The obtained nanocomposites can be proposed as potential candidates for cancer theranostics

    Anterior cruciate ligament recostruction with bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft in Tanner 3 stage patients with open physes

    Ten skeletally immature patients were treated with an arthroscopic-assisted anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with bone-patellar tendon bone autograft (compass, 50\u2013558; holes, 7\u20139 mm). Radiological assessments (standard radiograph), Orthopa\ua8 dische Arbeitsgruppe Knie (OAK) score and KT 1000, were conducted on all patients, 1 year after surgery. Skeletal maturity had been reached by all patients and no complications were observed. All patients returned to their preinjury sport level. Drilling more vertical tunnels when bone-tendon-bone autograft was chosen to avoid partial epiphysiodesis and offers good functional and isometric results

    Increased C-reactive protein concentration and suicidal behavior in people with psychiatric disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objective: Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide. Identifying factors associated with suicidality (suicidal ideation [SI]/suicidal behavior) could increase our understanding of the pathophysiological underpinnings of suicide and improve its prevention. Methods: We conducted a systematic review (PubMed/PsycInfo/Cochrane databases, up to September 2020) and random-effect meta-analysis including observational studies comparing peripheral C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in suicidal versus non-suicidal patients affected by any psychiatric disorder and healthy controls (HC). Primary outcome was the CRP standardized mean difference (SMD) between patients with high suicidality versus those with absent or low suicidality. Secondary outcomes were SMD of CRP levels between those with suicide attempt versus no suicide attempt, as well as between those with (high) versus low or absent SI. Quality of included studies was measured with Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Results: Out of initial 550 references, 21 observational studies involving 7682 subjects (7445 with mood disorders or first-episode psychosis, 237 HC) were included. A significant association of CRP levels with suicidality (SMD 0.688, 95% CI 0.476–0.9, p < 0.001) emerged. CRP levels were higher in individuals with high SI (SMD 1.145, 95% CI 0.273–2.018, p = 0.010) and in those with suicide attempt (SMD 0.549, 95%CI 0.363–0.735, p < 0.001) than non-suicidal individuals (either patients or HC). Main analyses were confirmed in sensitivity analysis (removing HC), and after adjusting for publication bias. The cross-sectional design of included studies, and the high heterogeneity of diagnosis and treatment limit the generalizability of these results. Median quality of included studies was high. Conclusion: CRP is associated with higher suicidality in patients with mental disorders. Large cohort studies longitudinally monitoring CRP levels are needed to explore its longitudinal association with suicidality

    Silver nanocluster/silica composite coatings obtained by sputtering for antibacterial applications

    Silver nanocluster silica composite coatings were deposited by radio frequency co-sputtering technique on several substrates. This versatile method allows tailoring of silver content and antibacterial behaviour of coatings deposited on glasses, ceramics, metals and polymers for several applications. Coating morphology and composition as well as nanocluster size were analyzed by means of UV-Visible absorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The antibacterial effect was verified through the inhibition halo test against standard bacterial strain, Staphylococcus aureus, before and after sterilization process. Tape test demonstrated a good adhesion of the coatings to the substrate
