Wrapper Maintenance: A Machine Learning Approach
The proliferation of online information sources has led to an increased use
of wrappers for extracting data from Web sources. While most of the previous
research has focused on quick and efficient generation of wrappers, the
development of tools for wrapper maintenance has received less attention. This
is an important research problem because Web sources often change in ways that
prevent the wrappers from extracting data correctly. We present an efficient
algorithm that learns structural information about data from positive examples
alone. We describe how this information can be used for two wrapper maintenance
applications: wrapper verification and reinduction. The wrapper verification
system detects when a wrapper is not extracting correct data, usually because
the Web source has changed its format. The reinduction algorithm automatically
recovers from changes in the Web source by identifying data on Web pages so
that a new wrapper may be generated for this source. To validate our approach,
we monitored 27 wrappers over a period of a year. The verification algorithm
correctly discovered 35 of the 37 wrapper changes, and made 16 mistakes,
resulting in precision of 0.73 and recall of 0.95. We validated the reinduction
algorithm on ten Web sources. We were able to successfully reinduce the
wrappers, obtaining precision and recall values of 0.90 and 0.80 on the data
extraction task
Active Learning with Multiple Views
Active learners alleviate the burden of labeling large amounts of data by
detecting and asking the user to label only the most informative examples in
the domain. We focus here on active learning for multi-view domains, in which
there are several disjoint subsets of features (views), each of which is
sufficient to learn the target concept. In this paper we make several
contributions. First, we introduce Co-Testing, which is the first approach to
multi-view active learning. Second, we extend the multi-view learning framework
by also exploiting weak views, which are adequate only for learning a concept
that is more general/specific than the target concept. Finally, we empirically
show that Co-Testing outperforms existing active learners on a variety of real
world domains such as wrapper induction, Web page classification, advertisement
removal, and discourse tree parsing
Expanding the Role of Social Class in Multicultural Counselor Education Curricula
Although professional counselors are called to develop Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC; Ratts et al., 2016), and social and cultural diversity are highly researched (e.g., Barrio Minton et al., 2014), social class as a multicultural construct has received less attention and is often reduced to being defined as socioeconomic status (SES). Therefore, this article provides a brief historical context of social class, explores the current state of social class research in counseling and counselor education, and suggests methods for increasing inclusion of social class in counselor educators’ multicultural pedagogy
Gas-Surface Dynamics and Profile Evolution during Etching of Silicon
Scattering of energetic F atoms on a fluorinated Si surface is studied by molecular beam methods. The energy transfer closely follows hard-sphere collision kinematics. Energy and angular distributions of unreacted F atoms suggest significant multiple-bounce scattering in addition to single-bounce scattering and trapping desorption. An empirical model of the atom-surface interaction dynamics is used in a Monte Carlo simulation of topography evolution during neutral beam etching of Si. Anti-Racist Considerations for Teaching CACREP Assessment and Diagnosis Courses
Professional counselors must act as anti-racist social justice advocates throughout the counseling relationship, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Due to internalized racism and inappropriate instruments, assessment and diagnosis are two critical areas where marginalized populations have historically experienced misdiagnosis and pathologizing impacting overall client care and wellbeing. Inappropriate instruments, inadequate training, and counselor bias have profound impacts on access to treatment and resources for individuals holding marginalized racial identities. Although the call for anti-racist counseling is clear, the profession is still unclear on how to teach these concepts to counselor trainees. Counselor educators must be intentional about incorporating anti-racist concepts into all counseling courses including assessment and diagnosis. Situated by the historical context of racism within helping professions, we aim to provide practical teaching implications for infusing anti-racist content into assessment and diagnosis courses in counselor education
An investigation of the degradation of Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) copolymer thermal blanketing materials aboard LDEF in the laboratory
Samples of fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer thermal blanketing material, recovered from the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), were investigated to determine the nature and the extent of degradation due to exposure to the low-Earth-orbit environment. Samples recovered from the ram-facing direction of LDEF, which received vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) radiation and atomic-oxygen impingement, and samples from the trailing edge, which received almost exclusively VUV exposure, were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The most significant result of this investigation was found on samples that received only VUV exposure. These samples possessed a hard, embrittled surface layer that was absent from the atomic-oxygen exposed sample and from unexposed control samples. This surface layer is believed to be responsible for the 'synergistic' effect between VUV and atomic oxygen. Overall, the investigation revealed dramatically different morphologies for the two samples. The sample receiving both atomic-oxygen and VUV exposure was deeply eroded and had a characteristic 'rolling' surface morphology, while the sample that received only VUV exposure showed mild erosion and a surface morphology characterized by sharp high-frequency peaks. The morphologies observed in the LDEF samples, including the embrittled surface layer, were successfully duplicated in the laboratory
Let\u27s Get Physical: Exploring the Socioemotional Motivators of Group Exercise for Older Adults
Approximately 75% of active adults in the U.S. do not meet the recommended levels of overall physical activity (CDC, 2021a). Given the beneficial impact of physical activity on health, an 8-week long, evidence-based group exercise program—Fit & Strong! (F&S!)—was created to improve the health of older adults (Hughes et al., 2004, 2006, 2010). Despite the clear physical benefits of F&S!, it remains unknown what motivates F&S! participants to initially participate in the program and also throughout the program. Drawing from core notions of socioemotional selectivity theory (SST; Carstensen, 2006), research has found that older adults are highly motivated to exercise by social goals (Steltenpohl et al., 2019). In other work, Fredrickson (2016) has proposed that positivity resonance—a caring interpersonal connection involving shared positivity and synchrony—is impactful in enhancing psychological and physiological wellbeing, and may play a central role in the quality of the older adults’ exercise experiences. As such, we investigated the extent to which health, social, and emotional factors motivated older adults to participate in F&S!, as well as the presence of positivity resonance during the program itself. Results indicated that (1) F&S! is most important to older adults for health and social reasons relative to emotional reasons, and (2) older adults, within the context of group exercise, experienced high levels of positivity resonance. These findings highlight the importance of how emphasizing both the social and health benefits of group exercise may be leveraged to motivate and maintain intentions to exercise for older adults

Polymer Translocation in Crowded Environments
We study the effect of the crowded nature of the cellular cytoplasm on the
translocation of a polymer through a pore in a membrane. By systematically
treating the entropic penalty due to crowding, we show that the translocation
dynamics are significantly altered, leading to novel scaling behaviors of the
translocation time in terms of chain length. We also observe new and
qualitatively different translocation regimes depending upon the extent of
crowding, transmembrane chemical potential asymmetry, and polymer length.Comment: 4 figure
Exploring Possibilities of Predicting Positive Counselor Qualities in Counseling Students from Personality Domains
In this pilot study, the authors investigated the degree that Big Five personality domains may predict the positive counselor qualities among 160 students enrolled in sections of a combined undergraduate/graduate Counseling Skills course. Positive counselor qualities of focus in this study are empathy, mindfulness or self-awareness, and unconditional positive self-regard in students studying counseling skills. The results do not suggest a significant predictive role for the Big Five personality domains for the Counseling Skills students, except that the Big Five domain of neuroticism predicted enough variation in mindfulness and unconditional positive self-regard to be practically significant. Limitations and potential implications of these findings for counselor educators and for future research are discussed
