Consumer resilience and consumer attitude towards traumatic events

The purpose of this study is to explore consumer resilience’s role and effect on the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and consumer attitude. There is little research on consumer resilience in the marketing disciplines even though the relevance of the construct has increased in other fields of study. To explore the role and effect of resilience, this study developed hypothetical conditions, in which this study assumes that each respondent is exposed to news of a traumatic incident or an experience, such as a terrorist attack or gun violence. Confirmatory factor analysis is conducted to verify each construct’s validity, and partial least squares structural equation modelling is performed to verify the model fit. Ordinary least squares (OLS) and path analyses are employed to test each hypothesis in this study. The findings show that CSR has a positive association with consumer attitudes and resilience. More importantly, the findings show that consumer resilience helps consumers improve their attitudes, and consumer attitudes are affected differently by the level of resilience

Some Preliminary Statistical, Qualitative, and Anecdotal Findings of an Empirical Study of Collegiality among Law Professors

In advance of a sophisticated analysis of the survey data, one must be very careful in drawing any overall conclusions about the state of collegiality and workplace well-being in legal academia. Certainly, no correlative assertions can be made. Nevertheless, this preliminary review has revealed some noteworthy information. Certainly, law faculties are far from perfectly collegial associations, and many if not most law professors have a gripe of one sort or another. Despite these facts, however, the overwhelming majority of faculty members appear to be happy with their choice of career. The qualitative data also leaves one with the impression that, overall, baseline collegiality is the norm at most law schools. However, more exceptions to this norm occur than most of us would find acceptable. In many instances, the source of uncollegial conduct is primarily the result of a few difficult personalities on any given faculty. Beyond that, some faculties appear to encounter friction along either status (non-tenure track versus tenure track) or political (conservative versus liberal; majority versus minority; male versus female) lines. Upon reflection, neither of these fault lines should come as a surprise, given the egos of the individuals smart and successful enough to obtain a position in legal academia, the close relationship between law and politics, and the passionate political views held by many law faculty

The Brand Relationship of Cult-Like Following: Developing Scales of Measurement in Apple and Catholic Devotees

The purpose of this research aims to fill in the gap in the religion-brand relationship, and explores what constitutes a cult-like allegiance to a brand, by examining subjects’ relationship to the Apple brand, comparing survey response by subjects who were “devotees” versus “indifferents” to Catholicism and to Apple. This paper uses Ninian Smart’s (1989) “Seven Dimensions of Religion” as a theoretical framework to develop scales of measurement among Apple and Catholic devotees. The contribution of this research is the development of Catholic and Apple scales. The Catholic scale extracted three factors and the Apple scale generated four factors in CFA.

Practicing Place in Newfoundland Poetry: Mary Dalton, John Steffler, and Michael Crummey is an M. A. thesis that synthesizes the poetry of three poets with Michel de Certeau's cultural theory and interview material. This thesis offers a digest of existing scholarship on these poets as well as some of the existing work theorizing the uses of poetry. There is one chapter written on each poet drawing substantively on the poet's work, an interview conducted with the poet and other related scholarship. Dalton, Steffler and Crummey represent specific and energetic spaces within Newfoundland. They conduct this energy into language using metaphorical thinking. Mary Dalton conducts the energy of dialect into her poetry. John Steffler is transmitting the energy of the natural world into poetry. Michael Crummey's poetry conducts energy to his readers from the emotional landscape of the Newfoundland his parents grew up in

Toxic Workers

While there has been a lot of research on finding and developing top performers in the workplace, less attention has been paid to the question of how to manage those workers who are harmful to organizational performance. In extreme cases, in addition to hurting performance, such workers can generate enormous regulatory and legal liabilities for the firm. We explore a large novel dataset of over 50,000 workers across 11 different firms to document a variety of aspects of workers’ characteristics and circumstances that lead them to engage in "toxic" behavior. We also find that avoiding a toxic worker (or converting him to an average worker) enhances performance to a much greater extent than replacing an average worker with a superstar worker

Effect of adenosine antagonism on metabolically mediated coronary vasodilation in humans

AbstractObjectives. This study was performed io assess the importance of adenosine in mediating metabolic coronary vasodilation during atrial pacing stress in humans.Background. Numerous animal studies have examined the role of adenosine in the regulation of coronary blood flow, with inconsistent results.Methods. The effect of the adenosine antagonist aminophylline (6 mg/kg body weight intravenously) on coronary functional hyperemia during rapid atrial pacing was determined in 12 patients. The extent of inhibition of adenosine vasodilation was assessed using graded intracoronary adenosine infusions before and after aminophylline administration in seven patients. Coronary blood flow changes were measured with a 3F intracoronary Doppler catheter.Results. After aminophylline administration, the increase in coronary flow velocity during adenosine infusions was reduced from 84 ± 48% (mean ± SD) to 21 ± 31% above control values (p < 0.001) at 10 μg/min and from 130 ± 39% to 59 ± 51% above control values (p < 0.001) at 40 μg/min. During rapid atrial pacing under control conditions, coronary blood flow velocity increased by 26 ± 16%. The flow increment during paced tachycardia after aminophylline (23 ± 10%) was unchanged from the control value, despite substantial antagonism of adenosine coronary dilation by aminophylline.Conclusions. These data suggest that adenosine does not play an important role in the regulation of coronary blood flow in response to rapid atrial pacing in humans
