The Difference of Teachers’ Beliefs Related to Students’ Practice of Confucian Analects: A Comparison among Three Chinese Fujian Ethnic Regions
Confucian culture is an important shared cultural characteristic in Chinese societies. The transmissions under different historical effects lead to differences of perceiving students’ practice of the Confucian Analects in society. The behaviors and beliefs of teachers represent their beliefs in observing students’ moral practices. The present study examined students’ practice of Confucian Analects observed by Chinese teachers in Fujian region of China, Taiwan, and Malaysia. Based on praxis approach, the present study contracted eight major constituents of Analects for explorative analysis. Seven hundred sixty questionnaires are returned and validated for explorative and comparative analyses. The results indicated that the constituents were correlated, and the teachers in the Fujian region thought that their students had the highest practice of the Confucian Analects, than Taiwan and Malaysia. The implication of this study suggested that cultural difference affects the perception of Chinese teachers in students’ practice of Confucian Analects and can be deployed in educational settings to increase the life fulfillment of Confucian philosophy
The Impact of Individual Characteristics, Personality Traits, Perceived Risk on Young People's Intention to Participate in Overseas Working Holiday
AbstractThis paper analyzes whether individual characteristics, personality traits, and perceived risk will affect young people's intention to participate in overseas working holiday, and taking the three countries of Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom as examples. The sample consists of young people and students at numerous universities and colleges, with ages ranging from 18 to 31. A total of 350 questionnaires were issued, and 204 valid questionnaires were recovered, with a return rate of 58.2%. Multiple regression was used to test hypotheses. The research results indicate that the factors influencing young people's intention to take working holiday in different countries were not entirely the same. It is found that age, work experience, neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, environmental and social risk, and agent and workplace risk may influence intention to participate in overseas working holiday. The research implications and recommendations are also presented
The Replication and Spread of Functional Food Messages: The Influence of Personalities on Internet Meme Behavior
The term Internet memes was coined to describe the phenomenon of replicating and spreading messages via social media. This study explores individual personality traits in relation to Internet meme behavior in the context of online news about functional foods based on the expectancy-confirmation process, and also the correlates between value perception and consequential behavior. An online convenience sample was used to collect data by posting on LINE, the instant communication tool, and a total of 343 questionnaires were returned, 252 valid questionnaires were used for structural equation modeling and hypothesis verification. The results found that: (1) Neuroticism was positively related and Extraversion was negatively related to value expectation for consuming functional foods; (2) The food value for health expectation participants can predict replication and usage satisfaction; (3) The usage satisfaction and replicative behavior can predict the frequency of spread messages. The results suggest that consumers with Neuroticism will need to reduce processes of Internet memes to online fake news about functional food
The nucleolar protein NIFK promotes cancer progression via CK1α/β-catenin in metastasis and Ki-67-dependent cell proliferation.
Nucleolar protein interacting with the FHA domain of pKi-67 (NIFK) is a Ki-67-interacting protein. However, its precise function in cancer remains largely uninvestigated. Here we show the clinical significance and metastatic mechanism of NIFK in lung cancer. NIFK expression is clinically associated with poor prognosis and metastasis. Furthermore, NIFK enhances Ki-67-dependent proliferation, and promotes migration, invasion in vitro and metastasis in vivo via downregulation of casein kinase 1α (CK1α), a suppressor of pro-metastatic TCF4/β-catenin signaling. Inversely, CK1α is upregulated upon NIFK knockdown. The silencing of CK1α expression in NIFK-silenced cells restores TCF4/β-catenin transcriptional activity, cell migration, and metastasis. Furthermore, RUNX1 is identified as a transcription factor of CSNK1A1 (CK1α) that is negatively regulated by NIFK. Our results demonstrate the prognostic value of NIFK, and suggest that NIFK is required for lung cancer progression via the RUNX1-dependent CK1α repression, which activates TCF4/β-catenin signaling in metastasis and the Ki-67-dependent regulation in cell proliferation
Bioactive Eunicellin-Based Diterpenoids from the Soft Coral Cladiella krempfi
Four new eunicellin-based diterpenoids, krempfielins A–D (1–4), along with two known compounds (5 and 6) have been isolated from a soft coral Cladiella krempfi. The structures of the new metabolites were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis and by comparison with spectroscopic data of related known compounds. Compounds 5 and 6 were shown to exhibit cytotoxicity against a limited panel of cancer cell lines. Furthermore, compounds 2, 3, 5 and 6 were shown to exert significant in vitro anti-inflammatory activity against LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage cells

GenEpi: gene-based epistasis discovery using machine learning.
BackgroundGenome-wide association studies (GWAS) provide a powerful means to identify associations between genetic variants and phenotypes. However, GWAS techniques for detecting epistasis, the interactions between genetic variants associated with phenotypes, are still limited. We believe that developing an efficient and effective GWAS method to detect epistasis will be a key for discovering sophisticated pathogenesis, which is especially important for complex diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD).ResultsIn this regard, this study presents GenEpi, a computational package to uncover epistasis associated with phenotypes by the proposed machine learning approach. GenEpi identifies both within-gene and cross-gene epistasis through a two-stage modeling workflow. In both stages, GenEpi adopts two-element combinatorial encoding when producing features and constructs the prediction models by L1-regularized regression with stability selection. The simulated data showed that GenEpi outperforms other widely-used methods on detecting the ground-truth epistasis. As real data is concerned, this study uses AD as an example to reveal the capability of GenEpi in finding disease-related variants and variant interactions that show both biological meanings and predictive power.ConclusionsThe results on simulation data and AD demonstrated that GenEpi has the ability to detect the epistasis associated with phenotypes effectively and efficiently. The released package can be generalized to largely facilitate the studies of many complex diseases in the near future
A retrospective study on the course and outcome of fetal ventriculomegaly
AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the outcomes associated with fetal ventriculomegaly.Materials and methodsReports of women who underwent ultrasound scanning between 18 and 36 weeks of gestation during the period from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2010, were reviewed. According to the defined severity of ventriculomegaly of affected fetuses, the women were divided into the following groups: (1) mild ventriculomegaly (Group A); (2) moderate ventriculomegaly (Group B); and (3) severe ventriculomegaly (Group C). The women were classified into the “gray zone” group if the fetal lateral ventricle measured between 7 mm and <10 mm. All cases were followed up with additional ultrasound scans. Postnatal information was obtained from the computer database or the medical charts.ResultsA total of 41 cases were recruited for this analysis. Four (9.8%) cases had an abnormal karyotype. Twelve women (29.3%) opted for termination of pregnancy. Of the 29 women who delivered, 56.1% (N = 23) were from Group A, 14.6% (N = 6) were from Group B, and none was from Group C. All children in Group A had normal neurological development. Three children in Group B had normal neurological development, whereas the other three had neurologic deficits. A total of 432 cases were classified into the “gray zone” group. Of these cases, 2.8% (N = 12) progressed to ventriculomegaly.ConclusionCases of isolated and mild ventriculomegaly without additional structural anomalies or chromosomal aberrations had good prognoses. However, the parents of fetuses with moderate or severe ventriculomegaly should be counseled regarding related risks. If the ventricular size of the fetus falls within the “gray zone”, at least one additional exam in the third trimester should be performed, for early detection of ventriculomegaly and other related abnormalities. It is important to make the parents of these fetuses aware of these risks, from a medico-legal point of view
Proopiomelanocortin gene delivery induces apoptosis in melanoma through NADPH oxidase 4-mediated ROS generation
AbstractHypoxia in the tumor microenvironment triggers differential signaling pathways for tumor survival. In this study, we characterize the involvement of hypoxia and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the antineoplastic mechanism of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) gene delivery in a mouse B16-F10 melanoma model in vivo and in vitro. Histological analysis revealed increased TUNEL-positive cells and enhanced hypoxic activities in melanoma treated with adenovirus encoding POMC (Ad-POMC) but not control vector. Because the apoptotic cells were detected mainly in regions distant from blood vessels, it was hypothesized that POMC therapy might render melanoma cells vulnerable to hypoxic insult. Using a hypoxic chamber or cobalt chloride (CoCl2), we showed that POMC gene delivery elicited apoptosis and caspase-3 activation in cultured B16-F10 cells only under hypoxic conditions. The apoptosis induced by POMC gene delivery was associated with elevated ROS generation in vitro and in vivo. Blocking ROS generation using the antioxidant N-acetyl-l-cysteine abolished the apoptosis and caspase-3 activities induced by POMC gene delivery and hypoxia. We further showed that POMC-derived melanocortins, including α-MSH, β-MSH, and ACTH, but not γ-MSH, contributed to POMC-induced apoptosis and ROS generation during hypoxia. To elucidate the source of ROS generation, application of the NADPH oxidase inhibitor diphenyleneiodonium attenuated α-MSH-induced apoptosis and ROS generation, implicating the proapoptotic role of NADPH oxidase in POMC action. Of the NADPH oxidase isoforms, only Nox4 was expressed in B16-F10 cells, and Nox4 was also elevated in Ad-POMC-treated melanoma tissues. Silencing Nox4 gene expression with Nox4 siRNA suppressed the stimulatory effect of α-MSH-induced ROS generation and cell apoptosis during hypoxia. In summary, we demonstrate that POMC gene delivery suppressed melanoma growth by inducing apoptosis, which was at least partly dependent on Nox4 upregulation
Topologically distinct classes of valence bond solid states with their parent Hamiltonians
We introduce a general method to construct one-dimensional translationally
invariant valence bond solid states with a built-in Lie group and derive
their matrix product representations. The general strategies to find their
parent Hamiltonians are provided so that the valence bond solid states are
their unique ground states. For quantum integer spin- chains, we discuss two
topologically distinct classes of valence bond solid states: One consists of
two virtual SU(2) spin- variables in each site and another is formed by
using two spinors. Among them, a new spin-1 fermionic valence bond
solid state, its parent Hamiltonian, and its properties are discussed in
detail. Moreover, two types of valence bond solid states with SO(5) symmetry
are further generalized and their respective properties are analyzed as well.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures; to be published in Physical Review
