    Neurogenesis Deep Learning

    Neural machine learning methods, such as deep neural networks (DNN), have achieved remarkable success in a number of complex data processing tasks. These methods have arguably had their strongest impact on tasks such as image and audio processing - data processing domains in which humans have long held clear advantages over conventional algorithms. In contrast to biological neural systems, which are capable of learning continuously, deep artificial networks have a limited ability for incorporating new information in an already trained network. As a result, methods for continuous learning are potentially highly impactful in enabling the application of deep networks to dynamic data sets. Here, inspired by the process of adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus, we explore the potential for adding new neurons to deep layers of artificial neural networks in order to facilitate their acquisition of novel information while preserving previously trained data representations. Our results on the MNIST handwritten digit dataset and the NIST SD 19 dataset, which includes lower and upper case letters and digits, demonstrate that neurogenesis is well suited for addressing the stability-plasticity dilemma that has long challenged adaptive machine learning algorithms.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, Accepted to 2017 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN 2017

    The anti-emetic potential of the 5-hydroxytryptamine3 receptor antagonist BRL 43694.

    In ferrets, the selective 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) 5-HT3 receptor antagonist BRL 43694 given as a single injection (0.05-0.5 mg kg-1 i.v.) before cisplatin, or by divided dose (2 x 0.005-2 x 0.5 mg kg-1 i.v.) before and after cisplatin dramatically reduced or abolished the severe cisplatin-induced vomiting. BRL 43694 also substantially reduced the vomiting induced by cyclophosphamide:doxorubicin, and prevented the trimelamol-induced emesis. The severe emesis caused by whole body exposure to X-irradiation was prevented by intravenous or oral BRL 43694. A single i.v. dose of BRL 43694 given during an emetic episode or within the peak emetic period, abolished the vomiting induced by the cytotoxic drugs and by X-irradiation, usually within 30 s. Where the induction of emesis was prevented or subsequently abolished by BRL 43694, the associated behaviour (subjectively assessed as nausea) was also absent or greatly attenuated. BRL 43694 (0.1 mg kg-1 i.v.) did not affect the emesis evoked in dogs by the dopamine agonist apomorphine. The potent anti-emetic activity of BRL 43694 is discussed in terms of potential clinical use, and of the fundamental role that 5-HT3 receptors may play in the mechanisms of nausea and vomiting

    The Voyager Encounter with Neptune

    The Voyager Neptune/Interstellar Mission is the continuation of the NASA program of exploration of the outer solar system. The prior phases of the Voyager program included encounters with Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus as summarized in the Journal of Geophysical Research (volume 86, pages 8121–8841, 1981; volume 88, pages 8625–9018, 1983; and volume 92, pages 14,873–15,375, 1987). Following the successes of these prior phases of the Voyager mission, a new phase was undertaken with the objectives of exploring the Neptune system and continuing the investigation of the interplanetary and interstellar media. An additional objective was to preserve the capability to extend the investigations to include a search for the heliopause. Summaries of results from the Neptune and Triton encounters are reported in the following papers

    Solar-driven variation in the atmosphere of Uranus

    Long-term measurements (1972-2015) of the reflectivity of Uranus at 472 and 551 nm display variability that is incompletely explained by seasonal effects. Spectral analysis shows this non-seasonal variability tracks the 11-year solar cycle. Two mechanisms could cause solar modulation, (a) nucleation onto ions or electrons created by galactic cosmic rays (GCR), or (b) UV-induced aerosol colour changes. Ion-aerosol theory is used to identify expected relationships between reflectivity fluctuations and GCR flux, tested with multiple regression and compared to the linear response predicted between reflectivity and solar UV flux. The statistics show that 24% of the variance in reflectivity fluctuations at 472 nm is explained by GCR ion-induced nucleation, compared to 22% for a UV-only mechanism. Similar GCR-related variability exists in Neptune’s atmosphere, hence the effects found at Uranus provide the first example of common variability in two planetary atmospheres driven through energetic particle modulation by their host star
