    Positivity Bounds on Higgs-Portal Dark Matter

    We consider the positivity bounds for WIMP scalar dark matter with effective Higgs-portal couplings up to dimension-8 operators. Taking the superposed states for Standard Model Higgs and scalar dark matter, we show that the part of the parameter space for the effective couplings, otherwise unconstrained by phenomenological bounds, is ruled out by the positivity bounds on the dimension-8 derivative operators. We find that dark matter relic density, direct and indirect detection and LHC constraints are complementary to the positivity bounds in constraining the effective Higgs-portal couplings. In the effective theory obtained from massive graviton or radion, there appears a correlation between dimension-8 operators and other effective Higgs-portal couplings for which the strong constraint from direct detection can be evaded. Nailing down the parameter space mainly by relic density, direct detection and positivity bounds, we find that there are observable cosmic ray signals coming from the dark matter annihilations into a pair of Higgs bosons, WWWW or ZZZZ.Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures, v2: one-loop corrections to the positivity bounds added, version to be published in JHE

    Development of real-time investigation technique for nonpoint pollution source distribution using programming interface

    Currently both central and local governments that are aware of the importance of conserving rivers, are making continuous efforts to solve the problem of non-point pollution sources (NPS) flowing into rivers. This study established a reactive web service app with a mobile application, to accommodate the need for systematic and scientific investigation and management of NPS. The developed investigation and management techniques incorporate all the PC-based administrative features, thereby improving development efficiency. A prototype of mobile GIS platform for a survey, inspection, and input was proposed, in which data related to pollution source locations and attributes can be effectively collected, stored, updated, and adjusted. To demonstrate, we conducted a quantitative analysis of river pollution source using GPS and GIS to show further details of the framework, which provides geographic information required to develop management technique of NPS flowing into rivers and related parameters in the form of a map. Furthermore, based on the interpolated maps and various environmental factors, the prediction of NPS as well as other parameters can be done. The research will not only improve the efficiency of investigation and management of NPS but also contribute to establishing a management policy, which covers quick decision-making and reaction to inflow accidents

    The SU(2)DSU(2)_D lepton portals for muon gāˆ’2g-2, WW boson mass and dark matter

    We propose a novel model for lepton flavor and dark matter based on the SU(2)DSU(2)_D gauge symmetry and vector-like leptons in its fundamental representations. We introduce a dark SU(2)DSU(2)_D Higgs doublet and a Higgs bi-doublet for the mass mixing between the vector-like lepton and the lepton. As a result, the seesaw lepton masses are generated and there are sizable one-loop contributions to the muon gāˆ’2g-2 via the SU(2)DSU(2)_D gauge bosons and the relatively heavy vector-like lepton, as indicated in Fermilab E989. The tree-level mass mixing between the ZZ boson and the isospin neutral gauge boson of SU(2)DSU(2)_D in our model accounts for the shift in the WW boson mass, being consistent with Tevatron CDFII. Finally, we show that the isospin charged gauge boson of SU(2)DSU(2)_D becomes a plausible candidate for dark matter with a small mass splitting tied up to the modified WW boson mass, and there is a viable parameter space where the favored corrections to the muon gāˆ’2g-2 and the WW boson mass and the dark matter constraints are simultaneously fulfilled.Comment: 33 pages, 4 figures, v2: references added, v3: version to appear in Phys.     Characterization of the Lytic Bacteriophage phiEaP-8 Effective against Both Erwinia amylovora and Erwinia pyrifoliae Causing Severe Diseases in Apple and Pear

    Bacteriophages, bacteria-infecting viruses, have been recently reconsidered as a biological control tool for preventing bacterial pathogens. Erwinia amylovora and E. pyrifoliae cause fire blight and black shoot blight disease in apple and pear, respectively. In this study, the bacteriophage phiEaP-8 was isolated from apple orchard soil and could efficiently and specifically kill both E amylovora and E. pyrifoliae. This bacteriophage belongs to the Podoviridae family. Whole genome analysis revealed that phiEaP-8 carries a 75,929 bp genomic DNA with 78 coding sequences and 5 tRNA genes. Genome comparison showed that phiEaP-8 has only 85% identity to known bacteriophages at the DNA level. PhiEaP-8 retained lytic activity up to 50 degrees C, within a pH range from 5 to 10, and under 365 nm UV light.     Enhanced cardiac expression of two isoforms of matrix metalloproteinase-2 in experimental diabetes mellitus.

    BackgroundDiabetic cardiomyopathy (DM CMP) is defined as cardiomyocyte damage and ventricular dysfunction directly associated with diabetes independent of concomitant coronary artery disease or hypertension. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), especially MMP-2, have been reported to underlie the pathogenesis of DM CMP by increasing extracellular collagen content.PurposeWe hypothesized that two discrete MMP-2 isoforms (full length MMP-2, FL-MMP-2; N-terminal truncated MMP-2, NTT-MMP-2) are induced by high glucose stimulation in vitro and in an experimental diabetic heart model.MethodsRat cardiomyoblasts (H9C2 cells) were examined to determine whether high glucose can induce the expression of the two isoforms of MMP-2. For the in vivo study, we used the streptozotocin-induced DM mouse heart model and age-matched controls. The changes of each MMP-2 isoform expression in the diabetic mice hearts were determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Immunohistochemical stains were conducted to identify the location and patterns of MMP-2 isoform expression. Echocardiography was performed to compare and analyze the changes in cardiac function induced by diabetes.ResultsQuantitative RT-PCR and immunofluorescence staining showed that the two MMP-2 isoforms were strongly induced by high glucose stimulation in H9C2 cells. Although no definite histologic features of diabetic cardiomyopathy were observed in diabetic mice hearts, left ventricular systolic dysfunction was determined by echocardiography. Quantitative RT-PCR and IHC staining showed this abnormal cardiac function was accompanied with the increases in the mRNA levels of the two isoforms of MMP-2 and related to intracellular localization.ConclusionTwo isoforms of MMP-2 were induced by high glucose stimulation in vitro and in a Type 1 DM mouse heart model. Further study is required to examine the role of these isoforms in DM CMP

    Whole-brain imaging with receive-only multichannel top-hat dipole antenna RF coil at 7Ā T MRI

    This work investigates the construction and performance of an eight-channel top-hat dipole receiver RF coil with a capacitive plate to increase the longitudinal whole-brain coverage and receiver sensitivity gain in the brain at 7 T MRI. The construction method for top-hat dipole-based receiver RF coil by adjusting the length and structure corresponding to each channel consists of tuning, matching, balun, and detuning circuitry. Electromagnetic simulations were analyzed on a 3-D human model to evaluate B1+ efficiency and specific absorption rate deposition. Coil performance was evaluated in the human head imaging in vivo. EM simulation results indicated a higher B1āˆ’ sensitivity in the brain and z-directional coverage of the proposed eight-channel receiver RF coil. The MR images were acquired with an identical field of view showing the receiver coverage improvement in the brain when capacitive plates are used. The MR images also show the clear visibility of the complete set of the cervical vertebrae as well as the spinal cord. The acquired MRI results demonstrate the capability of the proposed RF coil to increase the receiver coverage in the longitudinal direction. Moreover, the B1+ efficiency, as well as receiver sensitivity in the brain, can be substantially improved with the use of multilayered capacitive plates of proper shape and size in conjunction with an RF coil

    Leukotactin-1/CCL15-induced chemotaxis signaling through CCR1 in HOS cells

    AbstractLeukotactin-1 (Lkn-1)/CCL15 is a recently cloned CC-chemokine that binds to the CCR1 and CCR3. Although Lkn-1 has been known to function as a chemoattractant for neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes, its cellular mechanism remains unclear. To understand the mechanism of Lkn-1-induced chemotaxis signaling, we examined the chemotactic activities of human osteogenic sarcoma cells expressing CCR1 in response to Lkn-1 using inhibitors of signaling molecules. Inhibitors of Gi/Go protein, phospholipase C (PLC) and protein kinase CĪ“ (PKCĪ“) inhibited the chemotactic activity of Lkn-1 indicating that Lkn-1-induced chemotaxis signal is transduced through Gi/Go protein, PLC and PKCĪ“. The activities of PLC and PKCĪ“ were also enhanced by Lkn-1 stimulation. Chemotactic activity of Lkn-1 was inhibited by the treatment of cycloheximide and actinomycin D suggesting that newly synthesized proteins are needed for chemotaxis. Nuclear factor-ĪŗB (NF-ĪŗB) inhibitor reduced chemotactic activity of Lkn-1. DNA binding activity of NF-ĪŗB was also enhanced by Lkn-1 stimulation. These results suggest that Lkn-1 transduces the signal through Gi/Go protein, PLC, PKCĪ“, NF-ĪŗB and newly synthesized proteins for chemotaxis
