    Using Prospect Theory To Explain The Setting Of The Expected Rate Of Return On Pension Assets

    Studies often use earnings management to explain the setting of assumed expected rate of return (ERRs) on pension assets in the defined benefit plans. In this paper, we argue that a managerā€™s risk attitude toward investment may have an impact on setting ERRs on pension assets. Prospect theory is a theory of decision making under risk and is used to explain firmsā€™ behavior with regard to earnings management. We believe that prospect theory also can be used to explain firmsā€™ setting of ERRs, which critically depends on managersā€™ expectations regarding risky investment. Empirical evidence shows that prospect theory can explain how firms set their ERRs on pension assets. We find that firms in the high-ERR group are risk-averters; that is, there is a positive relationship between risk and return. On the other hand, firms in the low-ERR group are risk-lovers and have an inverse risk-return relationship. Our findings contribute to the literature by suggesting that managersā€™ risk attitudes also affect the choice of ERR

    Understanding Clientsā€™ Intentions to Explore Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Features: A Social Capital Theory Perspective

    The pervasive post-adoption of on-demand software-as-a-service (SaaS) products via the Internet has provided clients with sufficient convenience and functional flexibility to rent and build the multifunctional services they require. Prior research has called for a deeper understanding of how client firms encourage the exploration of SaaS applications in the workplace. However, exploring the best service combinations depends on the clientsā€™ socially related motivation. Hence, we draw on social capital theory in this study to examine clientsā€™ intentions to explore new SaaS service features. We use service quality to complement structural capital as an indicator, as it is more suitable for assessing the service structure of systems. Drawing on a sample of 246 employees in the IT service departments of small- and medium-sized companies in Taiwan, we generate the following empirical results. First, most of the main effect paths only show significant positive signs for the effect of relational capital on the intention to explore, and the effect of environmental quality on social capital is not supported. Second, we rebuild the mediation model to test the non-supported hypotheses and find that relational capital partially mediates the relationship between service quality and the intention to explore. Also, this study investigates the different tendencies to continuance behavior by habit as a moderating effect within the conceptual model. According to the structural invariance test across moderating effect, it showed that: First, most of main effect paths showed significant positive signs only habit as moderator on trust in service provider is negative support. Second, the habit was supported as a moderator except for the trust in shopping-site to online shopping continuance interaction path. Unexpectedly, the positive moderating effect of habit tendency towards the path of trust in shopping-site to online shopping continuance in not significant.     Clinical parameters associated with absence of endocervical/transformation zone component in conventional cervical Papanicolaou smears

    AbstractObjectiveTo study clinical factors predicting the absence of endocervical/transformation zone (EC/TZ) components of conventional cervical Papanicolaou (Pap) smears.Materials and methodsThe medical charts of patients who received Pap smears between March 2006 and August 2006 in the hospital were reviewed. The results of their Pap smears were retrieved while their demographic and clinical information were obtained from the medical charts. After excluding 378 cases with incomplete demographic data and 1397 cases with a history of pelvic irradiation, pelvic malignancy, and hysterectomy, 5662 cases were enrolled for data analysis. The relationship between clinical parameters and the absence of EC/TZ component was analyzed by Pearson Chi-square tests with Yates continuity correction and binary logistic regression tests.ResultsThe incidence of satisfactory but absence of EC/TZ component was 8.7% (491/5662). Pregnancy increased the absence of EC/TZ component [odds ratio (OR}: 2.84, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.14ā€“3.77, p<0.0001]. Postpartum status and endocervical polyps decreased incidence (OR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.38ā€“0.98, pĀ =Ā 0.043 and OR: 0.33, 95% CI: 0.25ā€“0.44, p<0.0001, respectively).ConclusionsPregnancy is the only clinical factor associated with increased incidence of absence of EC/TZ cells. For these pregnant women undergoing a Pap smear, a more effective strategy may be needed to get a satisfactory smear with adequate EC/TZ components

Terrestrial water storage anomalies emphasize interannual variations in global mean sea level during 1997-1998 and 2015-2016 El Nino Events. Geophysical Research Letters, 48(18), (2021): e2021GL094104, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021GL094104.Interannual variations in global mean sea level (GMSL) closely correlate with the evolution of El NiƱo-Southern Oscillation. However, GMSL differences occur in extreme El NiƱos; for example, in the 2015ā€“2016 and 1997ā€“1998 El NiƱos, the peak GMSL during the mature stage of the former (9.00 mm) is almost 2.5 times higher than the latter (3.72 mm). Analyses from satellite and reanalysis data sets show that the disparity in GMSL is primarily due to barystatic (ocean mass) changes. We find that the 2015ā€“2016 event developed not purely as an Eastern Pacific El NiƱo event but with Central Pacific (CP) El NiƱo forcing. CP El NiƱos contribute to a stronger negative anomaly of global terrestrial water storage and subsequent higher barystatic heights. Our results suggest that the mechanism of hydrology-related interannual variations of GMSL should be further emphasized, as more CP El NiƱo events are projected to occur.This study was supported by a grant of MOST 106-2111-M-002-010-MY4 to National Taiwan University

    Understanding the antecedents and consequences of a firmā€™s agility in cloud software applications is important. This papers draws on the competitive dynamics perspective to develop a model that explains the relationships between collaboration with vendors, agility, and competitive performance in software-as-a-service (SaaS) context. Collaboration reflects a firmā€™s ability to leverage interfirm resources, characterized as knowledge sharing and process alignment. Agility is measured by a firmā€™s strategy-oriented agility and service-oriented agility. This study also investigates the moderating effect of environmental turbulence. The proposed hypotheses are supported by the empirical data. The results show that competitive performance is affected by ability, which, in turn, is impacted by collaboration. Environmental turbulence positively moderates the relationship between agility and performance. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results

    Estimating systemic fibrosis by combining galectin-3 and ST2 provides powerful risk stratification value for patients after acute decompensated heart failure

    Background: Two fibrosis biomarkers, galectin-3 (Gal-3) and suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2), provide prognostic value additive to natriuretic peptides and traditional risk factors in patients with heart failure (HF). However, it is to be investigated whether their combined measurement before discharge provides incremental risk stratification for patients after acute HF. Methods: A total of 344 patients with acute HF were analyzed with Gal-3, and ST2 measured. Patients were prospectively followed for 3.7 Ā± 1.3 years for deaths, and composite events (death/HF-related re-hospitalizations). Results: The levels of Gal-3 and ST2 were only slightly related (r = 0.20, p &lt; 0.001). The medians of Gal-3 and ST2 were 18 ng/mL and 32.4 ng/mL, respectively. These biomarkers compensated each other and characterized patients with different risk factors. According to the cutoff at median values, patients were separated into four subgroups based on high and low Gal-3 (HG and LG, respectively) and ST2 levels (HS and LS, respectively). Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that HGHS powerfully identified patients at risk of mortality (Log rank = 21.27, p &lt; 0.001). In multivariable analysis, combined log(Gal-3) and log(ST2) was an inĀ­dependent predictor. For composite events, Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed a lower event- -free survival rate in the HGHS subgroup compared to others (Log rank = 34.62, p &lt; 0.001; HGHS vs. HGLS, Log rank = 4.00, p = 0.045). In multivariable analysis, combined log(Gal-3) and log(ST2) was also an independent predictor. Conclusions: Combination of biomarkers involving heterogeneous fibrosis pathways may identify patients with high systemic fibrosis, providing powerful risk stratification value

    A protein interaction based model for schizophrenia study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Schizophrenia is a complex disease with multiple factors contributing to its pathogenesis. In addition to environmental factors, genetic factors may also increase susceptibility. In other words, schizophrenia is a highly heritable disease. Some candidate genes have been deduced on the basis of their known function with others found on the basis of chromosomal location. Individuals with multiple candidate genes may have increased risk. However it is not clear what kind of gene combinations may produce the disease phenotype. Their collective effect remains to be studied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Most pathways except metabolic pathways are rich in protein-protein interactions (PPIs). Thus, the PPI network contains pathway information, even though the upstream-downstream relation of PPI is yet to be explored. Here we have constructed a PPI sub-network by extracting the nearest neighbour of the 36 reported candidate genes described in the literature. Although these candidate genes were discovered by different approaches, most of the proteins formed a cluster. Two major protein interaction modules were identified on the basis of the pairwise distance among the proteins in this sub-network. The large and small clusters might play roles in synaptic transmission and signal transduction, respectively, based on gene ontology annotation. The protein interactions in the synaptic transmission cluster were used to explain the interaction between the NRG1 and CACNG2 genes, which was found by both linkage and association studies. This working hypothesis is supported by the co-expression analysis based on public microarray gene expression.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>On the basis of the protein interaction network, it appears that the NRG1-triggered NMDAR protein internalization and the CACNG2 mediated AMPA receptor recruiting may act together in the glutamatergic signalling process. Since both the NMDA and AMPA receptors are calcium channels, this process may regulate the influx of Ca<sup>2+</sup>. Reducing the cation influx might be one of the disease mechanisms for schizophrenia. This PPI network analysis approach combined with the support from co-expression analysis may provide an efficient way to propose pathogenetic mechanisms for various highly heritable diseases.</p

    Pediatric Traffic Injuries on Halloween in the United Kingdom: Prevalence and Injury Severity

    The study results serve as a reminder for parents, children, and drivers to be alert to the danger of traffic crashes on Halloween. The aim of this study was to examine whether Halloween is associated with a higher incidence of traffic injuries and whether traffic injuries sustained on Halloween are more severe than those sustained on other days. The U.K. STATS19 database, including the data of all road traffic crashes occurring from 1990 to 2017, was employed. A total of 73,587 pediatric traffic casualties (involving pedestrians, cyclists, and moped riders) were included. Between 17:00 and 19:00 (17:00~18:59) on Halloween, the number of casualties was higher than that on other public holidays and usual days. The logistic regression model revealed that, between 17:00 and 18:00 (17:00~17:59), the risk of being killed or seriously injured on Halloween was 34.2% higher (odds ratio = 1.342; 95% CI = 1.065ā€“1.692) than that on other days. Pediatric crashes occurring on Halloween are associated with a higher number of injuries and increased injury severity
