    Miniaturized Sensors for Detection of Ethanol in Water Based on Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy and Resonant Perturbation Method - A Comparative Study

    The development of highly sensitive, portable and low-cost sensors for the evaluation of ethanol content in liquid is particularly important in several monitoring processes, from the food industry to the pharmaceutical industry. In this respect, we report the optimization of two sensing approaches based on electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and complementary double split ring resonators (CDSRRs) for the detection of ethanol in water. Miniaturized EIS sensors were realized with interdigitated electrodes, and the ethanol sensing was carried out in liquid solutions without any functionalization of the electrodes. Impedance fitting analysis, with an equivalent circuit over a frequency range from 100 Hz to 1 MHz, was performed to estimate the electric parameters, which allowed us to evaluate the amount of ethanol in water solutions. On the other hand, complementary double split ring resonators (CDSRRs) were optimized by adjusting the device geometry to achieve higher quality factors while operating at a low fundamental frequency despite the small size (useful for compact electronic packaging). Both sensors were found to be efficient for the detection of low amounts of ethanol in water, even in the presence of salts. In particular, EIS sensors proved to be effective in performing a broadband evaluation of ethanol concentration and are convenient when low cost is the priority. On the other end, the employment of split ring resonators allowed us to achieve a very low limit of detection of 0.2 v/v%, and provides specific advantages in the case of known environments where they can enable fast real-time single-frequency measurements

    Gas sensing technologies -- status, trends, perspectives and novel applications

    The strong, continuous progresses in gas sensors and electronic noses resulted in improved performance and enabled an increasing range of applications with large impact on modern societies, such as environmental monitoring, food quality control and diagnostics by breath analysis. Here we review this field with special attention to established and emerging approaches as well as the most recent breakthroughs, challenges and perspectives. In particular, we focus on (1) the transduction principles employed in different architectures of gas sensors, analysing their advantages and limitations; (2) the sensing layers including recent trends toward nanostructured, low-dimensional and composite materials; (3) advances in signal processing methodologies, including the recent advent of artificial neural networks.     Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy with a Mixed Approach in a Patient with Kartagener Syndrome: Technical Report and Review of Literature

    Kartagener syndrome (KS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease. The disease is characterized by three typical symptoms: chronic sinusitis, situs viscerum inversus (SVI), and bronchiectasis. The laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the standard procedure in most cases of cholelithiasis, but in SVI patients it can be difficult, especially for right-handed surgeons. We report the case of a 24-year-old female affected by KS, presenting with a history of symptomatic cholelithiasis. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography confirmed SVI totalis and cholelithiasis. The patient underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy by a right-handed surgeon performed with a mixed approach without complications. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in SVI patients can be a safe and reliable technique especially for a left-handed surgeon. The described technique is also easy for a right-handed surgeon. However, it is considered a technically challenging procedure and often requires technical modification

    ROLE OF VIRTOPSY IN THE POST MORTEM DIAGNOSIS OF DROWNING

    Purpose: Due to admitted limits of autopsy-based studies in the diagnosis of drowning, virtopsy is considered the new imaging horizon in these post-mortem studies. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of virtopsy performed through computed tomography (CT) in the forensic diagnosis of drowning. Materials and methods: We retrospectively examined the CT data of four cadavers recovered from sea water and suspected to have died by drowning. Each patient underwent a full-body post-mortem CT scan, and then a traditional autopsy. Conclusion: To date, there are no autopsy findings pathognomonic of drowning. This study proves that virtopsy is a useful tool in the diagnosis of drowning in that it allows us to understand if the victim was alive or dead when he entered the water and if the cause of death was drowning. Results: All the cadavers showed fluid in the airways and patchy ground-glass opacities in the lung. Only one patient had no fluid in the digestive tract; this patient had a left parietal bone fracture with a large gap and other multiple bone fractures (nose, clavicle, first rib and patella). One of the three patients who had fluid in the digestive tract had no fluid in the paranasal sinuses. This latter patient showed cerebral oedema with subarachnoid and intraventricular haemorrhage, multiple bone fractures (orbital floor, ribs, sacrum and acetabular edge) and air in the heart, in the aorta and in bowel loops. © 2014, Italian Society of Medical Radiology

    Stem Cell Transplantation in Acute Myeloid Laeukemia

    Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation represents the only potentially curative therapeutic approach for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The choice to perform an allogeneic hematopoietic transplant is the result of a decision-making process that considers disease-related factors (AML-risk category and the state of disease at the time of transplant), the type of donor available and his characteristics (HLA compatibility, gender, CMV serostatus) and the individual risk associated with the procedure itself. The choice of the appropriate conditioning regimen depends on the patient’s age and comorbidities. While the introduction of reduced intensity regimen and the availability of alternative donors allows more patients to be eligible for transplantation, myeloablative conditioning remains the standard of care for fit patients. Disease relapse is the leading cause of treatment failure and new strategies attempting at reducing the relapse incidence post transplantation are currently being investigated

    Is Shouldice the best NON-MESH inguinal hernia repair technique? A systematic review and network metanalysis of randomized controlled trials comparing Shouldice and Desarda

    Background Current guidelines state that the Shouldice technique has lower recurrence rates than other suture repairs and therefore is strongly recommended in non-mesh inguinal hernia repair. Recently a new tissue repair technique has been proposed by Desarda and studied in trials against Lichtenstein technique. Methods The present study was performed according to the PRISMA Statement for Network Meta-analysis and the AMSTAR 2 checklist. The method of network meta-analysis was chosen to evaluate randomized controlled trial published on tissue repair and comparing Lichtenstein respectively with Desarda and Shouldice techniques. The following parameters: operative time, recurrence, complications (general, intraoperative, Surgical Surgical Site Occurrences), VAS score on postoperative day 1, numbness, chronic pain and return to daily activities. Results Fourteen RCTs, involving 2791 patients, fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were selected for final analysis. The anchored indirect treatment comparison showed that Desarda's technique requires a significantly shorter operative time (MD: −12.9 min; 95% CI: −20.6 to −5.2) and has a quicker recovery (MD: −6.6 days; 95% CI: −11.7 to −1.4). Outcomes concerning intraoperative complications, early postoperative pain, seroma/hematoma, hydrocele and infection rates, recurrence, numbness and chronic pain were similar among the two techniques. Conclusions Desarda's hernia repair can be a valuable alternative to Shouldice technique for the treatment of primary inguinal hernia repair if a non-mesh technique is chosen, because of its reproducibility and quicker postoperative recovery. We recommend performing well designed prospective studies comparing both techniques directly

    Stroemgren - near-infrared photometry of the Baade's Window. I. The bulge globular cluster NGC6528 and the surrounding field

    We present Stroemgren-NIR photometry of NGC6528 and its surroundings in the Baade's Window. uvby images were collected with EFOSC2@NTT, while NIR catalogs are based on VIRCAM@VISTA and SOFI@NTT data. The matching with HST photometry allowed us to obtain proper-motion-cleaned samples of cluster and bulge stars. The huge color sensitivity of Stroemgren-NIR CMDs helped us in disentangling age and metallicity effects. The RGB of NGC6528 is reproduced by scaled-solar isochrones with solar abundance or alpha-enhanced isochrones with the same iron content, and an age of t = 11+/-1 Gyr. These findings support literature age estimates for NGC6528. We also performed a theoretical metallicity calibration based on the Stroemgren index m1 and on visual-NIR colors for RGs, by adopting scaled-solar and alpha-enhanced models. We applied the calibration to estimate the metallicity of NGC6528, finding [Fe/H] = -0.04+/-0.02, with an intrinsic dispersion of 0.27 dex (by averaging abundances based on the scaled-solar [m], y - J and [m], y - K Metallicity-Index-Color relations), and of -0.11+/-0.01 (sig = 0.27 dex), by using the m1, y - J and m1, y - K relations. These findings support the results of Zoccali et al. (2004) which give [Fe/H] = -0.10+/-0.2, and a low alpha-enhancement, [alpha/Fe] = 0.1, and of Carretta et al. (2001), that find [Fe/H] = 0.07+/-0.01, with [alpha/Fe] = 0.2. By applying the scaled-solar MIC relations to Baade's window RGs, we find a metallicity distribution extending from [Fe/H] ~ -1.0 to ~ 1 dex, with peaks at [Fe/H] ~ -0.2 and +0.55 ([m], y - J and [m], y - K relations), and [Fe/H] ~ -0.25 and +0.4 (m1, y - J and m1, y - K relations). These findings are in good agreement with the spectroscopic studies of Hill et al. (2011) for the Baade's window, of Uttenthaler et al. (2012) for a region centered at (l,b) = (0, -10), and with the results of the ARGOS survey (Ness et al. 2013a).Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysic
