Evaluation of approaches to control of Maedi-Visna disease of sheep using a Markov chain simulation model for a range of typical British Flocks
An epidemiological model is described that closely mimicked results of a published serological study of natural transmission of Maedi-Visna virus in a low ground flock of sheep. We adjusted parameters in the model from this baseline to explore the possible implications for the control of Maedi-Visna virus in typical British flocks. On closed hill farms, low probability of effective contact was most critical for control. In open low ground flocks, purchasing accredited replacements eliminated disease spread, otherwise flock size was the most important factor governing flock prevalence. Theoretical Clues to the Ultraviolet Diversity of Type Ia Supernovae
The effect of metallicity on the observed light of Type Ia supernovae (SNe
Ia) could lead to systematic errors as the absolute magnitudes of local and
distant SNe Ia are compared to measure luminosity distances and determine
cosmological parameters. The UV light may be especially sensitive to
metallicity, though different modeling methods disagree as to the magnitude,
wavelength dependence, and even the sign of the effect. The outer density
structure, ^56 Ni, and to a lesser degree asphericity, also impact the UV. We
compute synthetic photometry of various metallicity-dependent models and
compare to UV/optical photometry from the Swift Ultra-Violet/Optical Telescope.
We find that the scatter in the mid-UV to near-UV colors is larger than
predicted by changes in metallicity alone and is not consistent with reddening.
We demonstrate that a recently employed method to determine relative abundances
using UV spectra can be done using UVOT photometry, but we warn that accurate
results require an accurate model of the cause of the variations. The abundance
of UV photometry now available should provide constraints on models that
typically rely on UV spectroscopy for constraining metallicity, density, and
other parameters. Nevertheless, UV spectroscopy for a variety of SN explosions
is still needed to guide the creation of accurate models. A better
understanding of the influences affecting the UV is important for using SNe Ia
as cosmological probes, as the UV light may test whether SNe Ia are

VLA Observations of the "Eye of the Tornado"- the High Velocity \HII Region G357.63-0.06
The unusual supernova remnant candidate G357.7-0.1 and the compact source
G357.63-0.06 have been observed with the Very Large Array at 1.4 and 8.3 GHz.
The H92 line (8.3 GHz) was detected from the compact source with a
surprising velocity of about -210 km/s indicating that this source is an \HII
region, is most likely located at the Galactic center, and is unrelated to the
SNR. The \HI absorption line (1.4 GHz) data toward these sources supports this
picture and suggests that G357.7-0.1 lies farther away than the Galactic

From Newton's Laws to the Wheeler-DeWitt Equation
This is a pedagogical paper which explains some ideas in cosmology at a level
accessible to undergraduate students. It does not use general relativity, but
uses the ideas of Newtonian cosmology worked out by Milne and McCrea. The
cosmological constant is also introduced within a Newtonian framework.

Redshifts and Killing Vectors
Courses in introductory special and general relativity have increasingly
become part of the curriculum for upper-level undergraduate physics majors and
master's degree candidates. One of the topics rarely discussed is symmetry,
particularly in the theory of general relativity. The principal tool for its
study is the Killing vector. We provide an elementary introduction to the
concept of a Killing vector field, its properties, and as an example of its
utility apply these ideas to the rigorous determination of gravitational and

Swift UVOT Observations of Core-Collapse SNe
We review recent UV observations of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) with the
Swift Ultra-violet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) during its first two years.
Rest-frame UV photometry is useful for differentiating SN types by exploiting
the UV-optical spectral shape and more subtle UV features. This is useful for
the real-time classification of local and high-redshift SNe using only
photometry. Two remarkable SNe Ib/c were observed with UVOT -- SN2006jc was a
UV bright SN Ib. Swift observations of GRB060218/SN2006aj began shortly after
the explosion and show a UV-bright peak followed by a UV-faint SN bump. UV
observations are also useful for constraining the temperature and ionization
structure of SNe IIP. Rest-frame UV observations of all types are important for
understanding the extinction, temperature, and bolometric luminosity of SNe and
to interpret the observations of high redshift SNe observed at optical

A high-resolution radio survey of the Vela supernova remnant
This paper presents a high-resolution radio continuum (843 MHz) survey of the
Vela supernova remnant. The contrast between the structures in the central
pulsar-powered nebula of the remnant and the synchrotron radiation shell allows
the remnant to be identified morphologically as a member of the composite
class. The data are the first of a composite remnant at spatial scales
comparable with those available for the Cygnus Loop and the Crab Nebula, and
make possible a comparison of radio, optical and soft X-ray emission from the
resolved shell filaments. The survey, made with the Molonglo Observatory
Synthesis Telescope, covers an area of 50 square degrees at a resolution of
