Our agenda is to offer a conceptual/theoretical understanding of the post-structural approach to literature interpretation/performance. We make a practice of the theory in the construction of the paper—we allow the text to speak for itself. We provide a juxtaposition numerous authors. We focus on the text rather than the author. We offer the following reading instructions: Please read the text as a whole and skimming the referential notations. The citations are provided for readers who wish to further the topic. We realize we depart from the traditional academic writing form. The common occurrence of the style in competition underscores the merit to our use. We have interspliced text from numerous sources dealing with post-structuralist thought in the same manner used by intercollegiate competitors in Program Oral Interpretation. Benefits of Read-Alouds in Early Childhood Literacy Development

This study examined the benefits of read alouds and early childhood literacy development. Research was conducted in preschool classrooms that use whole group interactive read alouds, as part of the daily literacy instruction. Data was collected through observation, teacher and student questionnaires, and examination and analysis of student work samples, in response to the daily read-aloud. The findings show that interactive read-alouds are highly beneficial for early childhood literacy development resulting in increased engagement, strengthened reading and writing skills, and the students’ abilities to make connections. In order to promote student interaction during learning, teachers must motivate their students by creating authentic, purposeful, and engaging literacy experiences that involve the teacher and students engaging, communicating and collaborating with each other

#21 - A salivary hormonal study on individuals of African ancestry living in different socio-economic environments, in order to understand etiology of prostate cancer

Prostate cancer ranks high among some of the most serious public health problems that significantly impact the lives of men globally. Established risk factors for this disease include age, family history, and African ancestry. While the incidence and mortality of prostate cancer have decreased in the US in recent decades, men of African descent are disproportionately affected. To better understand the etiology of prostate cancer among men of African ancestry, this study examined hormonal differences among men of African descent living in different socio-economic environments by using their saliva samples to study their hormone levels. Using ELISA kits specific to either testosterone or cortisol, hormone levels were determined for each individual’s saliva using standards and low and high-quality control samples for validation. The saliva samples collected from individuals living in African countries (n=21) had a mean testosterone concentration of 93.43 pg/mL and standard deviation of 35.924 pg/mL while the mean cortisol concentration was 0.120 mg/dL and the standard deviation was 0.078 mg/dL. The saliva samples collected from individuals with African ancestry in the United States (n=84) had a mean testosterone concentration of 94.680 pg/mL with a standard deviation of 35.218 pg/mL while the mean cortisol concentration was found to be 0.136 mg/dL with a standard deviation of 0.101 mg/dL. This poster will explain data collected for both hormones for males living in African countries and the United States and will discuss whether these hormone levels can be used to determine individuals at risk for prostate cancer. Any observed effects from socio-economic differences will also be discussed

Project RAILS: Lessons Learned about Collaborative Rubric Assessment of Information Literacy Skills

Rubric assessment of information literacy is an important tool for librarians seeking to show evidence of student learning. The authors, who collaborated on the Rubric Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (RAILS) research project, draw from their shared experience to present practical recommendations for implementing rubric assessment in a variety of institutional contexts. These recommendations focus on four areas: (1) building successful collaborative relationships, (2) developing assignments, (3) creating and using rubrics, and (4) using assessment results to improve instruction and assessment practices. Recommendations are discussed in detail and include institutional examples of emerging practices that can be adapted for local use

Approaches to interdisciplinary mixed methods research in land change science and environmental management

Combining qualitative and quantitative methods and data is crucial to understanding the complex dynamics and often interdisciplinary nature of conservation. Many conservation scientists use mixed methods, but there are a variety of mixed methods approaches, a lack of shared vocabulary, and few methodological frameworks. We reviewed articles from 2 conservation-related fields that often incorporate qualitative and quantitative methods: land-change science (n= 16) and environmental management (n= 16). We examined how authors of these studies approached mixed-methods research by coding key methodological characteristics, including relationships between method objectives, extent of integration, iterative interactions between methods, and justification for use of mixed methods. Using these characteristics, we created a typology with the goal of improving understanding of how researchers studying land-change science and environmental management approach interdisciplinary mixed methods research. We found 5 types of mixed methods approaches, which we termed simple nested, informed nested, simple parallel, unidirectional synthesis, and bidirectional synthesis. Methods and data sources were often used to address different research questions within a project, and only around half of the reviewed papers methodologically integrated different forms of data. Most authors used one method to inform the other rather than both informing one another. Very few articles used methodological iteration. Each methodological type has certain epistemological implications, such as the disciplinary reach of the research and the capacity for knowledge creation through the exchange of information between distinct methodologies. To exemplify a research design that can lead to multi-dimensional knowledge production, we provide a methodological framework that bidirectionally integrates and iterates qualitative and quantitative methods
