    Thissavros Hydropower Plant Managing Geotechnical Problems in the Construction

    The Thissavros hydropower and pumped storage project on the Nestos river in northern Greece involved construction of a 172 m high rockfill dam and an underground power house with 300 MW installed capacity. Bedrock at the site consists of gneiss with complex geological structure and complicated hydrogeological conditions. On the right abutment, the dam partially rests on a large landslide and the toe of another large landslide extends into the plunge pool from the left bank. Initial excavations activated the dormant slides. Unloading, buttressing and drainage successfully stabilized the landslides. Core material for the dam is a silty sand and required special precautions in design and construction. Starting with an extremely rapid reservoir filling the dam has performed highly satisfactorily. The power house had to be excavated in a relatively unfavorable geological orientation but application of structural discontinuity analysis avoided wedge failures

    The alternative splicing factor hnRNP A1 is up-regulated during virus-infected epithelial cell differentiation and binds the human papillomavirus type 16 late regulatory element

    AbstractHuman papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) infects anogenital epithelia and is the etiological agent of cervical cancer. We showed previously that HPV16 infection regulates the key splicing/alternative splicing factor SF2/ASF and that virus late transcripts are extensively alternatively spliced. hnRNP A1 is the antagonistic counterpart of SF2/ASF in alternative splicing. We show here that hnRNP A1 is also up-regulated during differentiation of virus-infected epithelial cells in monolayer and organotypic raft culture. Taken together with our previous data on SF2/ASF, this comprises the first report of HPV-mediated regulation of expression of two functionally related cellular proteins during epithelial differentiation. Further, using electrophoretic mobility shift assays and UV crosslinking we demonstrate that hnRNP A1 binds the HPV16 late regulatory element (LRE) in differentiated HPV16 infected cells. The LRE has been shown to be important in temporally controlling virus late gene expression during epithelial differentiation. We suggest that increased levels of these cellular RNA processing factors facilitate appropriate alternative splicing necessary for production of virus late transcripts in differentiated epithelial cells

    True nature of an archetypal self-assembly system: Mobile Au-thiolate species on Au(111)

    Alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM) phases on Au(111) have been assumed to involve direct S head group bonding to the substrate. Using x-ray standing wave experiments, we show the thiolate actually bonds to gold adatoms; self-organization in these archetypal SAM systems must therefore be governed by the movement of these Au-S-R moieties on the surface between two distinct local hollow sites on the surface. The results of recent ab initio total energy calculations provide strong support for this description, and a rationale for the implied significant molecular mobility in these systems

    Risk, commercialism and social purpose: Repositioning the English housing association sector

    Originally seen as the ‘third arm’ of UK housing policy, the independent, not-for-profit housing association sector had long been seen as effective in ‘filling the gap’ where the state or market were unable to provide for households in need. Since the 1980s in particular, successive governments had viewed housing associations in favourable terms as efficient, semi-autonomous social businesses, capable of leveraging significant private funding. By 2015, in contrast, central government had come to perceive the sector as inefficient, bureaucratic and wasteful of public subsidy. Making use of institutional theory, this paper considers this paradigm shift and examines the organisational responses to an increasingly challenging operating environment. By focusing, in particular, on large London housing associations, the paper analyses their strategic decision-making to address the opportunities and threats presented. The paper argues that in facing an era of minimal subsidy, low security and high risk, the 2015 reforms represent a critical juncture for the sector. Housing organisations face a stark dilemma about whether to continue a strategy of ‘profit for purpose’ or to embrace an unambiguously commercial ethos. The article contends that the trajectory of decision-making (although not unidirectional) leads ultimately towards an increased exposure to risk and vulnerability to changes in the housing market. More fundamentally, the attempt to reconcile social and commercial logics is likely to have wider consequences for the legitimacy of the sector

    Blue space as caring space – water and the cultivation of care in social and environmental practice

    This paper studies three sites or ‘landscapes of care’ in Leeds, Bristol and London where water and associated built and natural environments are used to co-construct and facilitate forms of social and environmental care. Our research narrates the ways in which blue spaces are cultivated for the production of particular forms of caring bodies and sensibilities. Interpreting care as both a doing (caring for) and emotion (caring about), we draw attention to the diverse practices and distributed nature of care in these environments. Our paper has three main insights. First, we draw attention to the role of water as both a material and site of care. Second, we identify a range of more-than-human benefits associated with blue spaces and how these emerge via collaborative, non-linear and reciprocal forms of care. Third, we argue that by understanding how care works in everyday social practice, new forms of ecological care and pro-environmental ways of living with the world can emerge
