    An Examination of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory’s Nomological Network: A Meta-Analytic Review

    Since its publication, the Psychopathic Personality Inventory and its revision (Lilien- feld & Andrews, 1996; Lilienfeld & Widows, 2005) have become increasingly popular such that it is now among the most frequently used self-report inventories for the assessment of psychopathy. The current meta-analysis examined the relations between the two PPI factors (factor 1: Fearless Dominance; factor 2: Self-Centered Impulsivity), as well as their relations with other validated measures of psychopathy, internalizing and externalizing forms of psychopathology, general personality traits, and antisocial personality disorder symptoms. Across 61 samples reported in 49 publications, we found support for the convergent and criterion validity of both PPI factor 2 and the PPI total score. Much weaker validation was found for PPI factor 1, which manifested limited convergent validity and a pattern of correlations with central criterion variables that was inconsistent with many conceptualizations of psychopathy

    Probing the distance and morphology of the Large Magellanic Cloud with RR Lyrae stars

    We present a Bayesian analysis of the distances to 15,040 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) RR Lyrae stars using VV- and II-band light curves from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, in combination with new zz-band observations from the Dark Energy Camera. Our median individual RR Lyrae distance statistical error is 1.89 kpc (fractional distance error of 3.76 per cent). We present three-dimensional contour plots of the number density of LMC RR Lyrae stars and measure a distance to the core LMC RR Lyrae centre of 50.2482±0.0546(statistical)±0.4628(systematic)kpc{50.2482\pm0.0546 {\rm(statistical)} \pm0.4628 {\rm(systematic)} {\rm kpc}}, equivalently μLMC=18.5056±0.0024(statistical)±0.02(systematic){\mu_{\rm LMC}=18.5056\pm0.0024 {\rm(statistical)} \pm0.02 {\rm(systematic)}}. This finding is statistically consistent with and four times more precise than the canonical value determined by a recent meta-analysis of 233 separate LMC distance determinations. We also measure a maximum tilt angle of 11.84∘±0.80∘11.84^{\circ}\pm0.80^{\circ} at a position angle of 62∘62^\circ, and report highly precise constraints on the VV, II, and zz RR Lyrae period--magnitude relations. The full dataset of observed mean-flux magnitudes, derived colour excess E(V−I){E(V-I)} values, and fitted distances for the 15,040 RR Lyrae stars produced through this work is made available through the publication's associated online data.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Landslides, threshold slopes and the survival of relict terrain in the wake of the Mendocino Triple Junction

    Establishing landscape response to uplift is critical for interpreting sediment fluxes, hazard potential, and topographic evolution. We assess how landslides shape terrain in response to a wave of uplift traversing the northern California Coast Ranges (United States) in the wake of the Mendocino Triple Junction. We extracted knickpoints, landslide erosion rates, and topographic metrics across the region modified by Mendocino Triple Junction migration. Landslide erosion rates mapped from aerial imagery are consistent with modeled uplift and exhumation, while hillslope gradient is invariant across the region, suggesting that landslides accommodate uplift, as predicted by the threshold slope model. Landslides are concentrated along steepened channel reaches downstream of knickpoints generated by base-level fall at channel outlets, and limit slope angles and relief. We find evidence that landslide-derived coarse sediment delivery may suppress catchment-wide channel incision and landscape denudation over the time required for the uplift wave to traverse the region. We conclude that a landslide cover effect may provide a mechanism for the survival of relict terrain and orogenic relief in the northern Californian Coast Ranges and elsewhere over millennial time scales
