Lieux et pratiques des cultes en Corse à l’âge du Fer

L’inventaire des manifestations liées à des pratiques cultuelles et symboliques reste à l’âge du Fer très sommaire en Corse, reflétant l’état de la recherche ; celui-ci offre en effet une documentation très déséquilibrée, à la fois sur le plan géographique et sur le plan qualitatif, qui compte 12 sépultures, 3 dépôts de mobilier isolés ( ?), 3 alignements de menhirs fréquentés au cours de l’âge du Fer. aucune donnée n’est issue de l’habitat. Les différents phénomènes recensés sont donc essentiellement reliés aux pratiques funéraires ; ils témoigneraient notamment de la présence de différents dépôts distincts du dépôt funéraire (vases, restes de faune) à l’intérieur ou à proximité de la sépulture, la pratique du festin funéraire, l’existence possible d’un intérêt particulier accordé à l’extrémité céphalique, et enfin, d’une réutilisation d’alignements plus anciens. L’ensemble de ces pratiques repose encore sur des données limitées, compliquant leur interprétation et limitant des comparaisons avec les données connues sur le continent.Places and cultic practices in Corsica during the Iron Age. The inventory of sites and material associated with Corsican Iron Age cultual practices is quite limited and reflects the status of research on this topic. As it stands, this research is quite unbalanced at the geographical and qualitative levels. There are 12 burials, three isolated hoards and three menhir alignments that were used during the Iron Age. There is no settlement site material. The different phenomena that have been identified are associated with funerary practices; they demonstrate the presence of distinct funerary deposits (urns, faunal remains) in the interior, or adjacent to the burial. They also indicate funerary feasting as well as the possible existence of an emphasis on the head area. Finally, there is the re-exploitation of ancient alignments. The study of the ensemble of these practices is based on a limited dataset that complicates their interpretation and restricts their comparison with data from the continent

p42/p44 MAP kinase module plays a key role in the transcriptional regulation of the vascular endothelial growth factor gene in fibroblasts

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) is a potent mitogen for vascular endothelial cells that has been implicated in tumor neovascularization. We show that, in hamster fibroblasts (CCL39 cells), VEGF mRNAs are expressed at low levels in serum-deprived or exponentially growing cells, whereas it is rapidly induced after stimulation of quiescent cells with serum. CCL39 derivatives, transformed with Polyoma virus or with active members of the p42/p44 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway, Gly/Val point mutant of Ras at position 12 (Ras-Val12), MKK1 in which Ser218 and Ser222 were mutated to Asp (MKK1-SS/DD)), express very high levels of VEGF mRNA. To analyze the contribution of the p42/p44MAP kinase in this induction, we used the CCL39-derived cell line (Raf-1:ER) expressing an estradiol-activable Raf-1. We show a time and an estradiol dose-dependent up-regulation of VEGF mRNA clearly detectable after 2 h of stimulation. The induction of VEGF mRNA in response to conditioned activation of Raf-1 is reverted by an inhibitor of MKK1, PD 098059, highlighting a specific role for the p42/p44 MAP kinase pathway in VEGF expression. Interestingly, hypoxia has an additive effect on VEGF induction in CCL39 cells stimulated by serum or in Raf-1:ER cells stimulated by estradiol. In contrast to VEGF, the isoforms VEGF-B and VEGF-C are poorly regulated by growth and oncogenic factors. We have identified a GC-rich region of the VEGF promoter between -88 and -66 base pairs which contains all the elements responsible of its up-regulation by constitutive active Ras or MKK1-SS/DD. By mutation of the putative binding sites and electrophoretic mobility supershift experiments, we showed that the GC-rich region constitutively binds Sp1 and AP-2 transcription factors. Furthermore, following activation of the p42/p44 MAP kinase module, the binding of Sp1 and AP-2 is increased in the complexes formed in this region of the promoter. Altogether, these data suggest that hypoxia and p42/p44 MAP kinase independently play a key role in the regulation of the VEGF expression

Open Home Networks: the TEAHA Approach

The current trend for home appliances is networking. Although more and more of these appliances are networked, there is not a standard way of interaction, which restrains the development of services for in-home networks. The lack of standardisation is partly due to a legacy of business interests; white goods, audio video equipment, security, and personal digital appliances all have a different background and have different business models. Rather than profound standardisation we propose secure seamless interworking of technologies, applications, and business interests. In this paper we present an architecture which is embedded in legacy technology. Our approach combines known design patterns, augments existing technology, and facilitates so-called business clusters. Further, we discuss a prototype implementation that integrates as an example OSGI, ZIGBEE, and UPNP technology with CECED (white goods) business interests. Effects of cell tension on the small GTPase Rac

Cells in the body are subjected to mechanical stresses such as tension, compression, and shear stress. These mechanical stresses play important roles in both physiological and pathological processes; however, mechanisms transducing mechanical stresses into biochemical signals remain elusive. Here, we demonstrated that equibiaxial stretch inhibited lamellipodia formation through deactivation of Rac. Nearly maximal effects on Rac activity were obtained with 10% strain. GAP-resistant, constitutively active V12Rac reversed this inhibition, supporting a critical role for Rac inhibition in the response to stretch. In contrast, activation of endogenous Rac with a constitutively active nucleotide exchange factor did not, suggesting that regulation of GAP activity most likely mediates the inhibition. Uniaxial stretch suppressed lamellipodia along the sides lengthened by stretch and increased it at the adjacent ends. A fluorescence assay for localized Rac showed comparable changes in activity along the sides versus the ends after uniaxial stretch. Blocking polarization of Rac activity by expressing V12Rac prevented subsequent alignment of actin stress fibers. Treatment with Y-27632 or ML-7 that inhibits myosin phosphorylation and contractility increased lamellipodia through Rac activation and decreased cell polarization. We hypothesize that regulation of Rac activity by tension may be important for motility, polarization, and directionality of cell movement
