    Decision making based on data-analysis methods

    This technical report is based on four our recent articles:"Data fusion of pre-election gallups and polls for improved support estimates", "Analyzing parliamentary elections based on voting advice application data", "The Finnish car rejection reasons shown in an interactive SOM visualization tool", and "Network visualization of car inspection data using graph layout". Neural methods are applied in political and technical decision making. We introduce decision support schemes based on Self-Organizing Map (SOM) combined with other methods. Visualizations based on various data-analysis methods are developed. In political decision making we have examples from one parliamentary election and one presidential election utilizing opinion data collected beforehand. In technical decision making we concentrate on rejection reasons in car inspection data. This technical report is a summary of our recent non-nuclear studies

    女子大学生の生活環境と将来設計

    本研究の目的は教育から労働への移行期である女子大学生を対象として、どのように将来のライフコースを設定しているか、将来のライフコースを設定するときに家族資本がどのように期待されているか、さらに社会的資本がどのように認知され期待されているかについて明らかにした。調査は、2012 年11 月から12 月に実施され、関東、関西、中国地区の女子大生を対象として無記名による自記式質問紙法により実施された。調査の結果、現在の両親の役割分担の現状が女子大生のライフコースに大きく影響をおよぼし、さらに「性別役割分業」に対する意識が将来のライフコースを規定していることが明らかになった。また、母の職業経歴は娘である女子大生の役割モデルとして捉えられており、理想のライフコースも母のライフコースを踏襲している。専業主婦コースを選択した群は家族内経済資源が裕福であるが、家族内社会関係資源である性別役割規範に将来のライフコースを縛られている。両立コースを選択した群は資格・技能といった個人資源を持つことを希望し、女性が働くことについて家族がサポートしており、家族外社会関係資源を豊富に持っていた。The objective of this study was to investigate how female university students set their future life course during the transitional period from education to employment, what expectations they have regarding family capital when setting their future life course, and how they perceive social capital and set expectations. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted from November to December 2012, targeting female university students in the Kanto, Kansai, and Chugoku regions of Japan. Results show that present role-sharing by their parents greatly influenced the expected life course of these students and that an awareness of the “division of roles by gender” conditioned expectations for their future life course. In addition, the female university students took their mothers as role models, leading their ideal life course to follow in their mothers’ footsteps. Although respondents that indicated plans to be a homemaker had abundant family economic resources, female university students felt constrained to a life course within the norms of gender roles, which is a family social resource. Respondents who indicated a desire for other life courses had the ambition of acquiring individual resources, such as qualifications and skills, as well as abundant social resources outside the family and parents who support women working

    Handling of Germline Findings in Clinical Comprehensive Cancer Genomic Profiling

    Patients found to have presumed germline pathogenic variants (PGPVs) during comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) require genetic counseling (GC) referrals. We retrospectively investigated the outcomes of patients with PGPVs. Among 159 patients who underwent CGP, we recommended GC for the 16 patients with PGPVs (3 with [FG group] and 13 without [G Group] a family/personal history of hereditary cancer) as well as for the 8 patients with no PGPVs, but a history (F group); 2 (67%), 5 (38%), and 3 (38%) patients received GC in the FG, G, and F groups, respectively. Germline testing results were positive in 1 and 2 patients of the FG and G groups, respectively. Among the patients recommended for GC, 58% did not receive GC due to lack of interest, poor performance status, or death. CGP contributes to the identification of germline variants in patients without a history of hereditary cancer. However, the proportion of patients who undergo GC should be improved

    Influence of renal function and demographic data on intrarenal Doppler ultrasonography

    Intrarenal Doppler ultrasonography is a non-invasive method to evaluate the renal blood flow in patients with renal arterial stenosis as well as chronic kidney diseases (CKD). Until recently, the relationship between ultrasonography findings and CKD stage has not been fully understood. Overall, 162 patients with CKD without apparent renal arterial stenosis were included in this study, and the pulsed-wave Doppler ultrasonography findings were evaluated in terms of the following parameters: peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), and resistive index (RI) at the renal arterial trunk, hilum, segmental, and interlobar regions. Age showed a significant negative correlation with the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), kidney size, and aortic PSV. Additionally, age showed a significant positive correlation with RI in all 4 regions. The eGFR showed a positive correlation with the aortic PSV and kidney size, but a negative correlation with RI. Both age and eGFR were found to be independently associated with aortic blood flow. On the intrarenal ultrasound, EDV and RI showed stronger correlations with eGFR than PSV, suggesting that the former indices would be better markers of renal function. In particular, the interlobar EDV was found to be the best index that reflects renal function. Although the RI is also a good marker of renal function, it is confounded by age; thus, its utility would be weaker than that of the EDV. In conclusion, intrarenal pulsed-wave Doppler ultrasonography is a useful tool to estimate and evaluate the renal function; the interlobar EDV may be the best index to estimate the effective perfusion and filtration of the kidneys

    Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is indispensable for critically severe COVID-19 patients. However, it would be inapplicable to patients with a rare blood type or blood transfusion refusal. In that case, severely conservative fluid management with the sacrifice of renal functions and hydrocortisone therapy should be considered for better oxygenation

    Development of a screening system for central visual field using the eye-tracking device\n

     Background: Visual field test with gaze movements do not require a subjective response because they are based on reflexive movements. In this study, we developed a visual field test system with gaze movements to perform a central visual field screening, and then examined the reproducibility of the measurements in healthy adult volunteers. Methods: We examined 30 right eyes of 30 healthy volunteers (mean age, 22.7 ± 5.2 years) with a best-corrected visual acuity of at least 20/20. Gazefinder, an eye-tracking device, was used to measure gaze movements. Subjects with refractive correction were asked to follow a white target presented on a monitor. If a subject can accurately perform eye tracking with respect to the visual target, visual field with gaze movements measurements are theoretically possible in eight directions (horizontal/vertical to 15.3° and oblique to 21.5° ). After a total of three measurements, the data were quantified using analysis software (CreateChart). Finally, the intraclass correlation coefficients of the measurement values were obtained. Results: The difference between theoretical and actual measurement values, which is thought to reflect gaze accuracy, were –0.1° ± 0.9° for upper, –0.6° ± 1.0° for upper right, –0.2° ± 1.0° for right, –0.8° ± 0.9° for lower right, –0.5° ± 0.7° for lower, –0.5° ± 0.9° for lower left, –0.6 ° ± 0.5 ° for left, and –0.6 ° ± 0.5 ° for upper left. No significant differences were found among the eight directions, and gaze accuracy was high, at within 1°. The intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.6 or higher in each direction (P < 0.01), indicating high repeatability. Conclusions: In the traditional method for measuring visual field with gaze movements, the fixation point of view needs to be reset for each gaze movement. On the other hand, the system developed in this study has the advantage of not requiring eye movements to return to the fixation point. The present findings indicate that our newly developed system is a useful device when standard perimetry is difficult to measure

    Identification of two novel breast cancer loci through large-scale genome-wide association study in the Japanese population

    Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully identified about 70 genomic loci associated with breast cancer. Owing to the complexity of linkage disequilibrium and environmental exposures in different populations, it is essential to perform regional GWAS for better risk prediction. This study aimed to investigate the genetic architecture and to assess common genetic risk model of breast cancer with 6,669 breast cancer patients and 21,930 female controls in the Japanese population. This GWAS identified 11 genomic loci that surpass genome-wide significance threshold of P < 5.0 × 10−8 with nine previously reported loci and two novel loci that include rs9862599 on 3q13.11 (ALCAM) and rs75286142 on 21q22.12 (CLIC6-RUNX1). Validation study was carried out with 981 breast cancer cases and 1,394 controls from the Aichi Cancer Center. Pathway analyses of GWAS signals identified association of dopamine receptor medicated signaling and protein amino acid deacetylation with breast cancer. Weighted genetic risk score showed that individuals who were categorized in the highest risk group are approximately 3.7 times more likely to develop breast cancer compared to individuals in the lowest risk group. This well-powered GWAS is a representative study to identify SNPs that are associated with breast cancer in the Japanese population
