    Organochlorine Compounds in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) from Patagonia Argentina

    The Negro River is the most important hydrological system of Patagonia, Argentina, drains a watershed of 140,000 km2. Its main economic activities are agriculture and industry, representing potential sources of organochlorine compounds (OCCs): organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and PCBs, respectively. These pollutants are persistent, ubiquitous and hydrophobics and are accumulated in the lipid fraction of biota. Fish are excellent biomonitors of pollution because incorporate COCs from water and through diet, and represent different trophic levels. The aims of the present study were to investigate OCCs levels in wild common carp, Cyprinus carpio (Cyprynidae) focusing on: a) the distribution pattern of OCPs and PCBs in gills, gonads, liver, muscle, and stomach content, b) the potential of common carp as indicator of aquatic OCCs pollution, and c) the evaluation of residues in gills and stomach content to discuss different input pathways of OCCs. HCHs, Chlordanes, DDTs, Endosulfan, Heptachlors, Drines and PCBs were quantified by GC-ECD. The distribution of OCCs (ng.g?1 lipid) was gills> gonads> liver> muscle> stomach content. Endosulfan accounted for 64% of OCCs in gills while, DDTs, PCBs and Chlordanes predominated in the stomach content suggesting the incorporation of more hydrophilic pollutants from the water column and those most persistent and hydrophobic from the diet.El Río Negro es el sistema hidrológico más importante de la Patagonia Argentina, drena una cuenca de 140.000 Km2 . Sus principales actividades económicas son la agricultura y la industria, representando áreas potenciales de emisión de compuestos organoclorados (COCs): plaguicidas organoclorados (POCs) y PCBs, respectivamente. Estos contaminantes son persistentes, ubicuos e hidrofóbicos, acumulándose en los lípidos de la biota. Los peces son excelentes bioindicadores de contaminación ya que incorporan COCs desde el alimento y/o agua, ocupan distintos niveles tróficos y permiten determinar niveles traza en sus tejidos. Se determinó la distribución de COCs en branquias, músculo, hígado, gónadas y contenido estomacal de carpa común (Cyprinus carpio) de Río Negro. Además, se evaluaron posibles vías de ingreso de COCs por medio del estudio comparativo de residuos en branquias y contenido estomacal. Los POCs (HCHs, Clordanos, DDTs, Endosulfanes, Heptacloros, Drines) y PCBs fueron cuantificados por GC-ECD. La distribución de COCs (ng.g–1 lípido) presentó el siguiente gradiente: branquias >gónadas >hígado >músculo >contenido estomacal.     Increasing levels of persistent organic pollutants in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) following a mega-flooding episode in the Negro River basin, Argentinean Patagonia

    In 2006, a severe flooding episode in the Negro River basin, Argentinean Patagonia, occurred and mainly affected the middle valley where lands are devoted to agriculture and soils known to be polluted with persistent organic pollutants. The aim of this study was to estimate the effects of this event on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), endosulfans (α-, β-, sulfate), DDTs (p,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDT) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) levels in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) tissues. Post-event fish showed higher contaminants levels than pre-event at expenses of all groups. DDTs presented the highest concentrations in all tissues followed by PCBs, endosulfans and PBDEs. The metabolite p,p'-DDE represented about 80% of total DDTs, while PCBs were dominated by penta- and hexa-chlorobiphenyls congeners. BDE-47 was the predominant congener among PBDEs. Endosulfan showed the maximum differences between post- and pre-flood fish (up to 43-fold) with a α-/β- ratio > 1, suggesting exposure to fresh technical mixture. Contaminant profiles observed in rainbow trout tissues from both periods (pre- and post-event) were consistent with previous results from water, suspended particle matter and soils, showing that this species is a good biomonitor of aquatic pollution of Negro River basin. The presence of the pesticides in the Negro River system resulted from past and current agricultural practices and it was modified and enhanced by the flooding. Additionally, PCBs and PBDEs occurrence in the aquatic environment deserve more attention, and monitoring programs are recommended in order to diminish their incorporation to aquatic ecosystem.Fil: Ondarza, Paola Mariana.     Spatio-temporal trends and body size differences of OCPs and PCBs in Laeonereis culveri (Polychaeta: Nereididae) from Southwest Atlantic estuaries

    Southwest Atlantic (SWA) estuaries have been historically impacted by industrial and agricultural activities that represent an important source of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Intraspecific differences in OCPs and PCBs levels were evaluated in the benthic polychaete Laeonereis culveri from SWA estuaries (Samborombón; Mar Chiquita; Quequén Grande and Bahía Blanca) at different spatio-temporal scales. Regarding inter- and intra-estuarine spatial comparisons polychaetes showed significant differences in OCPs/PCBs levels (p < 0.05) being DDTs, endosulfan, penta- and hexa-CBs homologues the most representative compounds. Intra-estuarine comparisons also showed significant differences in terms of seasonality and body size (p < 0.05). OCPs/PCBs concentrations were negatively correlated with animal weight, but this covariable was not relevant on differences observed. OCPs/PCBs levels in polychaetes showed strong relationships with those of sediments, being suitable for estuarine biomonitoring studies.     Indoor persistent organic pollutants in agricultural areas from Argentina

    Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are anthropogenic chemicals extensively used in the past forindustrial and agricultural purposes, characterized by their lipophilicity, ubiquity, volatility andenvironmental persistence. By other hand, chlorpyrifos is the most widely used current pesticide(CUPs) being the main insecticide used for crops in Argentina. The aim of this work was to assesslevels of POPs and CUPs in different fractions of airborne particles collected indoor in agriculturalareas from Argentina. Particles higher than 2.5 µm were trapped in polyurethane foams (PUF)while particles smaller than 1 µm and volatile compounds were adsorbed on activated charcoal.Compounds were analyzed by gas chromatograph with electron capture detector (GC-ECD).Endosulfans, chlordanes, PCBs, and HCHs were detected in all PUF samples, while endosulfans,chlorpyrifos, PCBs and HCHs were the most abundant in smaller particles. Majority of pesticidesshowed higher concentrations during the summer season (1397,7 vs 832,5 pg m-3). Even adding upall measured organic compounds no sample reach the threshold limit value for indoor pesticideslevels (0.1 pg m-3), neither in the large or small particle fraction.     Influence of land use on chlorpyrifos and persistent organic pollutant levels in honey bees, bee bread and honey: Beehive exposure assessment

    This work reports the spatial and temporal variations on the dynamics of OCPs, PCBs, PBDEs and chlorpyrifos in honey bee, bee bread and honey samples, as well as soil and flowers from the surrounding areas, considering, different land uses. Honey bee samples showed the highest pollutant levels, with a predominance of the industrial contaminants over pesticides. Chlorpyrifos showed the highest concentration during the application period in almost all samples from the soybean field (S2), in concordance with its current use. By other hand, the recalcitrant compounds such as, DDTs, BDE #47 and also light PCBs exhibited the highest levels in beehive samples from the field adjacent to urban disposal waste (S3). In both soils and flower samples a prevalence of obsolete compounds over chlorpyrifos was observed, and the 6-CB predominated among the homologous groups of PCBs These results highlights the importance of soils as sink of these persistent contaminants, which became available depending on environmental conditions. Results revealed that the land uses and seasonal variations have directly impacted on the levels of agrochemicals, PCBs and PBDEs found in the beehive matrixes. This survey provides novel evidence about the current situation of pollution on honey bee colonies under temperate climates and contributes to the knowledge of this poor studied topic in Argentina.Fil: Villalba, A..     Pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs and their metabolites in fish from Argentina: Implications for protected areas influenced by urbanization

    Because an understanding of aquatic bioaccumulation of human pharmaceuticals in Latin America is limited, this area was recently identified as a priority environmental quality research need. We examined bioaccumulation of twenty-seven pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs and their metabolites in muscle, liver and gills of multiple fish species (Rhamdia quelen, Hypostomus commersoni, Hoplias lacerdae, Prochilodus lineatus) from an urban river receiving wastewater discharges (Paraná) and a lotic system (Acaraguá) without direct wastewater sources, which runs through a protected area. All samples were analyzed using isotope-dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Caffeine, which was detected up to 13 μg/kg, and antibiotics were consistently detected in all fish. Among antibiotics, erythromycin was ubiquitous (0.7–5.6 μg/kg) but its tissue concentrations were lower than levels of sulfamethoxazole, sulfathiazole and trimethoprim (0.9–5.5 μg/kg), which are used in human medicine, aquaculture and livestock. Erythromycin bioaccumulation in fish is reported here from Argentina for the first time, though levels of antibiotics in edible muscles of these species were lower than the maximum residue limits for human consumption. We observed norfluoxetine, the primary active metabolite of the antidepressant fluoxetine, ranging from 1.1–9.1 μg/kg in fish. We further identified benzoylecgonine, a primary metabolite of cocaine, in fish from both study systems, representing the first observation an illicit drug or associated metabolites bioaccumulation in aquatic life from Argentina. Interestingly, high pharmaceutical levels were observed in fish from the Acaraguá river suggesting their transport into the protected area, from the surrounding lands. Though fish from the Paraná river were sampled near WWTP discharges, pharmaceutical concentrations may have been reduced by hydrological and other environmental conditions, and biological differences among species. These findings, which observed bioaccumulation of select pharmaceuticals, their metabolites and illicit drugs in wild fish sampled inside a protected area, highlight the importance of developing an advanced understanding of urban influences on inland protected watersheds.Fil: Ondarza, Paola Mariana.     Multibiomarker responses and bioaccumulation of fipronil in Prochilodus lineatus exposed to spiked sediments: Oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses

    Fipronil is a current use pesticide, widely used in many crops, commonly adsorbed to sediments of aquatic environments. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biomarker responses and fipronil distribution pattern in different matrixes (fish, sediment and water) after juveniles P. lineatus exposure at two environmental concentrations (5.5 and 82 μg kg‐−1) of fipronil-spiked sediments. The levels of oxidized proteins (PO), lipid peroxidation (LPO), and enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione content (GSH), antioxidant capacity against peroxyls (ACAP) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were evaluated in liver, gills and brain. Concentrations of fipronil and its metabolites (f. desulfinyl, f sulphpHide and f. sulfone) were quantified by GC-ECD. F. desulfinyl was the major metabolite found in all matrixes, followed by f. sulphide in sediments, while f. sulfone was mainly accumulated in fish. Fipronil promoted oxidative stress in P. lineatus, as evidenced by the increases in LPO and PO levels and the decrease brain AChE activity. Fish exposed at both concentrations showed significant decrease in antioxidant capacity. Alterations in the antioxidant defenses system was evidenced in all organs. These results suggest that the occurrence of fipronil in aquatic environments can generate oxidative stress at different levels in P. lineatus, showing that this species is highly sensitive to the deleterious effects of fipronil and metabolites.Fil: Santillán Deiú, Antonella.     Bioaccumulation and distribution behavior of endosulfan on a cichlid fish: Differences between exposure to the active ingredient and a commercial formulation

    Persistent organic pollutants reach aquatic ecosystems during application and can bioconcentrate/biomagnify because of their lipophilic nature. Toxicological studies focus almost exclusively on the active ingredients of pesticides, instead of commercial formulations, whose toxicity can differ as a result of nonspecified ingredients. The intensive use of endosulfan as a wide-ranging insecticide over the last few decades makes it one of the most frequently detected contaminants in the aquatic environment, even after it has been restricted worldwide. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the bioaccumulation and organ distribution of waterborne endosulfan in the freshwater fish Cichlasoma dimerus, comparing the active ingredient and a commercial formulation. Males were exposed to 0.7 μg/L endosulfan for 2 wk, which was quantified (gas chromatography with an electron capture detector) in the liver, testes, gills, brain, and muscle. The results suggest rapid metabolism of α-endosulfan and β-endosulfan isomers to endosulfan sulfate (endosulfan-S) in tissues. Isomer levels were highest in gills, indicative of recent uptake. Levels of endosulfan-S were highest in liver and testes for the active ingredient and testes and brain for the commercial formulation. For the active ingredient, endosulfan-S levels showed a positive correlation with organ-lipid percentage. No correlation was evident for the commercial formulation, indicating that the presence of adjuvants alters endosulfan distribution because gills and liver showed a higher uptake and mobilization of β-endosulfan. These differences in organ distribution may alter tissue-specific toxicity; therefore, additives cannot be considered inactive even if nontoxic.Fil: Da Cuña, Rodrigo Hernán.     Modelo Terra-Lua-Sol: Uma Atividade Interdisciplinar

    O seguinte artigo descreve uma proposta de atividade interdisciplinar e a avaliação de uma aplicação desta com uma turma de quinto ano do Ensino Fundamental. Esta atividade acontece durante uma aula no laboratório de robótica e envolve as áreas da geografia, ciências, língua portuguesa e robótica. Com o intuito de construir conhecimento escolar e habilidades, durante esta aula os estudantes participam de atividades envolvendo um modelo robótico que simula os movimentos da Terra e da Lua, aqui chamado de Modelo Terra-Lua-Sol. Para tal proposta, que é baseada em conceitos de interdisciplinaridade e na teoria construcionista de aprendizagem de Seymour Papert, exploramos na introdução o conceito de interdisciplinaridade e seu significado no contexto das atividades de ensino e aprendizagem. No referencial teórico propõe-se uma relação entre a interdisciplinaridade e o Construcionismo e como essa teoria fundamenta a atividade. A avaliação da atividade considerou indicadores como a elaboração de esquemas mentais, a redação de uma carta, a promoção do trabalho em grupo e construção de uma entidade pública. A análise dos dados obtidos indicou que atividade interdisciplinar proporcionou aos estudantes o desenvolvimento do conhecimento e de habilidades.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18226/23185279.v6iss1p1

    Chlorpyrifos and persistent organic pollutants in feathers of the near threatened Olrog's Gull in southeastern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina

    The use of bird feathers to assess environmental contamination has steadily increased in ecotoxicological monitoring programs over the past decade. The Olrog's Gull (Larus atlanticus) is a species endemic to the Atlantic coast of southern South America, constituting one of the three threatened gull species listed in the entire American continent. The aim of this study was to assess the exposure to Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and chlorpyrifos in the Near Threatened Olrog's Gull through the analysis of body feathers sampled at the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, the main wintering area of the species in Argentina, controlling for sex and age class. Chlorpyrifos showed the highest concentrations among all contaminants and groups of individuals (X¯ = 263 ng g−1), while among POPs the concentration of organochlorine pesticides was higher than polychlorinated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, likely indicating the current use of these agricultural contaminant in the region. The highest values of total POP concentrations (males X¯ = 280 ng g−1, females X¯ = 301 ng g−1) were found in juvenile gulls, likely as a consequence of the incorporation of pollutants during the breeding season. Subadult and adult birds showed difference between sexes in the concentration of contaminants, with higher levels in males than females. The results highlight the need to include birds of different sex and age classes in order to better understand the variation in pollutants loads. The present study provides relevant information to improve the conservation status of the Olrog's Gull and new insights about the environmental health of the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina, a MAB-UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
