    Asymmetric Gaussian steering: when Alice and Bob disagree

    Asymmetric steering is an effect whereby an inseparable bipartite system can be found to be described by either quantum mechanics or local hidden variable theories depending on which one of Alice or Bob makes the required measurements. We show that, even with an inseparable bipartite system, situations can arise where Gaussian measurements on one half are not sufficient to answer the fundamental question of which theory gives an adequate description and the whole system must be considered. This phenomenon is possible because of an asymmetry in the definition of the original Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox and in this article we show theoretically that it may be demonstrated, at least in the case where Alice and Bob can only make Gaussian measurements, using the intracavity nonlinear coupler.Comment: 5 Pages, 4 Figure

    Spectral Analysis of a Four Mode Cluster State

    We theoretically evaluate the squeezed joint operators produced in a single optical parametric oscillator which generates quadripartite entangled outputs, as demonstrated experimentally by Pysher et al. \cite{pysher}[Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 030505 (2011)]. Using a linearized fluctuation analysis we calculate the squeezing of the joint quadrature operators below threshold for a range of local oscillator phases and frequencies. These results add to the existing theoretical understanding of this potentially important system.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Teenage Boys in Therapy: A Qualitative Study of Male Adolescents' Experiences of Short-Term Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

    Adolescent boys have the highest rates of disengagement and drop out from mental health services. Further, research suggests that when boys do enagage with services, they may value therapies that provide practical strategies rather than those that advocate the exploration of thoughts, feelings, and relationships. Research is therefore needed to gain a better understanding of teenage boys’ experiences of participating in such therapies. This qualitative study aimed to explore the therapeutic experiences of five male adolescents (aged 16 to 18 years) with moderate to severe depression, who engaged in Short-Term Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (STPP) as part of a randomized controlled trial. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of semi-structured interviews was used for an in-depth and idiographic exploration of their experiences. Three themes were identified: ‘Pain in therapy for a worthwhile purpose’, ‘A relationship unlike others: creating a space for reflection’, and “Ending with ‘a little bit of relief and a little bit of hope’”. The findings offer insight into factors that made it possible for these adolescents to engage in and benefit from STPP – a positive therapeutic relationship and gaining self-understanding – and, aspects that hindered their engagement and led to premature endings. This knowledge could inform clinical practice with depressed adolescent boys

    What contributes to good outcomes? The perspective of young people on short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy for depressed adolescents

    Depression is the fourth leading cause of adolescent illness and disability worldwide. A growing evidence base demonstrates that Short Term Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy [STPP] is an efficacious treatment for moderate to severe adolescent depression. However, with research in its infancy, key factors contributing to efficacy are unknown. Service users' lived experiences provide valuable insight in this area. This study aimed to elucidate what adolescents value in treatment by inductively exploring lived experiences of STPP. Five adolescents with the largest reduction in depressive symptoms scores between baseline and end of treatment, who had taken part in a large-scale randomized controlled trial, were sampled. In-depth interviews carried out soon after the end of therapy were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Three superordinate themes were identified: "Therapy as a Transformational Process", "Explorative and Exposing: The Therapeutic Space" and "Being Heard and Working Together: The Therapeutic Relationship". Adolescents valued a process of collaborative exploration with the therapist which when it was achieved was felt to facilitate a deep-rooted transformation in self-perception. Additionally, they described how an adjustment was needed to the particular frame of a psychoanalytic therapy. However, not all participants with a good treatment outcome experienced therapy in this way, suggesting a potential gap between the quantitative assessment of outcomes, and the way young people experience and understand the change process. Clinical implications and directions for research are discussed

    Open Space – a collaborative process for facilitating Tourism IT partnerships

    The success of IT projects depends on the success of the partnerships on which they are based. However past research by the author has identified a significant rate of failure in these partnerships, predominantly due to an overly technical mindset, leading to the question: “how do we ensure that, as technological solutions are implemented within tourism, due consideration is given to human-centred issues?” The tourism partnership literature is explored for additional insights revealing that issues connected with power, participation and normative positions play a major role. The method, Open Space, is investigated for its ability to engage stakeholders in free and open debate. This paper reports on a one-day Open Space event sponsored by two major intermediaries in the UK travel industry who wanted to consult their business partners. Both the running of the event and its results reveal how Open Space has the potential to address some of the weaknesses associated with tourism partnerships

    Psychodynamic psychotherapy for children and adolescents: an updated narrative review of the evidence-base

    While the evidence base for psychodynamic therapy with adults is now quite substantial, there is still a lack of research evaluating the effectiveness of psychodynamic therapies with children and young people. Those studies that have been carried out are also not widely known in the field. To help address the second point, in 2011, we carried out a review of the evidence base for psychodynamic psychotherapy for children and adolescents, which identified 35 studies which together provided some preliminary evidence for this treatment for a range of childhood disorders. The present study is an updated review, focusing on research published between March 2011 and November 2016. During this period, 23 additional studies were published, of which 5 were reports on randomised controlled trials, 3 were quasi-experimental controlled studies and 15 were observational studies. Although most studies covered children with mixed diagnoses, there were a number of studies examining specific diagnostic groups, including children with depression, anxiety and disruptive disorders. whilst the quality of studies was mixed, some were well-designed and reported, and overall indicated promising findings. Nevertheless, further high-quality research is needed in order to better understand the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy across a range of different disorders, and to ensure that services can provide a range of evidence-based treatments for children and young people

    Exploring the significance of land-cover change in South Africa

    Changing land cover is a phenomenon that is growing in magnitude and significance, both globally1 and in South Africa2 . Changes in land cover include the conversion of natural vegetation to agricultural crops and forest plantations, changes to natural vegetation through bush encroachment and overgrazing, soil erosion, invasion by alien plant species, and accelerating urbanisation. Land-cover changes increasingly relate to climate and atmospheric changes in ways that are currently poorly understood but potentially significant, especially in terms of compromising or enhancing the delivery of vital ecosystem services from rangelands, agricultural croplands, water catchments and conservation areas. Land-cover change is being studied in different ways, and at different scales, by ecologists, plant physiologists, applied biologists and social scientists. A core group of scientists has recently formed the Land Cover Change Consortium (LCCC), which aims to begin integrating the results of the varied approaches to studying land-cover change, and to guide future research directions, with a view to building a better science base for informing policy and management decision-making in conservation, agriculture and environmental management. The group has developed a simple conceptual outline that links field experiments, observation and monitoring, modelling and prediction of land-cover change (Figure 1), and is currently developing a funding base to support collaboration in addressing fundamental questions about how ecosystems might change in the coming decades, in training new graduates, and in communicating effectively with policymakers. The LCCC hopes to provide a theoretical and practical multidisciplinary platform for scientific collaboration on global change issues that also includes different stakeholder groups and contributes to policy and decision-making. Multidisciplinary collaboration is notoriously challenging, but holds great promise for novel insights

    Mentalizing techniques used by psychodynamic therapists working with children and early adolescents

    The aim of this study was to identify, categorize, and develop a conceptual frame of mentalization-based interventions used by experienced child and adolescent psychodynamic therapists. Two experienced therapists selected 14 sessions that represented their work during the first year of treatment. Sessions were transcribed and segmented to identify interactional units for coding. QDA Miner software was used to facilitate data analysis. A systematic qualitative, inductive/deductive approach was followed starting from categories identified in the literature, but also including newly emerging categories and interventions. Seven sessions were double coded to stabilize the coding tree and a "member check" was completed where therapists rated their own transcripts. A total of 24 mentalization-based techniques were identified, including 17 additional techniques. A conceptual framework organizing all observed mentalization-based interventions is proposed. The findings of this study provide a framework for studying techniques that may enhance the capacity to mentalize, and that could be features of therapeutic practice across a range of modalities of psychotherapy

    Quadripartite continuous-variable entanglement via quadruply concurrent downconversion

    We investigate an intra-cavity coupled down-conversion scheme to generate quadripartite entanglement using concurrently resonant nonlinearities. We verify that quadripartite entanglement is present in this system by calculating the output fluctuation spectra and then considering violations of optimized inequalities of the van Loock-Furusawa type. The entanglement characteristics both above and below the oscillation threshold are considered. We also present analytic solutions for the quadrature operators and the van Loock-Furusawa correlations in the undepleted pump approximation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
