    Atmospheric variability and air-sea interaction

    The topics studied include: (1) processing of Northern Hemispheric precipitation data, in order to fill in the transition seasons to provide a continuous 40 year data base on the variability of continental precipitation; (2) comparison of seasonally averaged fields of sea surface temperature obtained from ship observations in the North Atlantic and North Pacific in 1970 with the corresponding fields inferred from satellite observations; (3) estimation of seasonal average of total precipitable water at those admittedly few oceanic stations where repeated vertical soundings were made in 1970 and comparison with corresponding values inferred from satellite measurements; (4) comparison of seasonally averaged evaporation fields determined from ground based observations in 1970 with the field of divergence of the seasonal total horizontal water vapor flux inferred from satellite total water measurements and NMC wind data for the lower troposphere; (5) examination of meaning of convection-inversion index

    Hydrographic charting from LANDSAT Satellite: A comparison with aircraft imagery

    The relative capabilities of two remote-sensing systems in measuring depth and, consequently, bottom contours in sandy-bottomed and sediment-laden coastal waters were determined quantitatively. The multispectral scanner (MSS), orbited on the LANDSAT-2 Satellite, and the ocean color scanner (OCS), flown on U-2 aircraft, were used. Analysis of imagery taken simultaneously indicates a potential for hydrographic charting of marine coastal and shallow shelf areas, even when water turbidity is a factor. Several of the eight optical channels examined on the OCS were found to be sensitive to depth or depth-related information. The greatest sensitivity was in OCS-4(0.544 + or - 0.012 microns) from which contours corresponding to depths up to 12m were determined. The sharpness of these contours and their spatial stability through time suggests that upwelling radiance is a measure of bottom reflectance and not of water turbidity. The two visible channels on LANDSAT's MSS were less sensitive in the discrimination of contours, with depths up to 8m in the high-gain mode (3x) determined in MSS-4(0.5 to 0.6 microns)

The strip is fed through: (1) a station in which solar cells are elevated into engagement with solder pads for the printed circuitry and thereafter heated by an infrared lamp; (2) a station at which flux and solder residue is removed; (3) a station at which electrical performance of the soldered cells is determined; (4) a station at which an encapsulating resin is deposited on the cells; (5) a station at which the encapsulated solar cells are examined for electrical performance; and (6) a final station at which the resulting array is wound on a takeup drum

    Factors That Impact Compensation Of Ncaa Head Basketball Coaches

    To show junior, senior, and graduate economics students that topics for course projects can arise in their every-day reading, this study examines the compensation of relatively successful coaches: Division I men’s basketball coaches whose teams appeared in the 2011, ’12, or ‘13 NCAA Tournaments.  Salary is hypothesized as a function of coach specific characteristics as well as the college’s conference affiliation.  Head coaching characteristics include: experience measured as years at current school; the winning percentage at current school, previous college head-coach experience, NCAA tournament winning percentage, and NCAA championships won.  Other characteristics considered are the coach’s race and his current school’s BCS or non-BCS conference affiliation. The regression results verify that experience at both current and previous school(s), plus NCAA winning percentage and NCAA championships won, measure job performance and are positively related to compensation

    Ground-State Roughness of the Disordered Substrate and Flux Line in d=2

    We apply optimization algorithms to the problem of finding ground states for crystalline surfaces and flux lines arrays in presence of disorder. The algorithms provide ground states in polynomial time, which provides for a more precise study of the interface widths than from Monte Carlo simulations at finite temperature. Using d=2d=2 systems up to size 4202420^2, with a minimum of 2×1032 \times 10^3 realizations at each size, we find very strong evidence for a ln2(L)\ln^2(L) super-rough state at low temperatures.Comment: 10 pages, 3 PS figures, to appear in PR

    Spin and link overlaps in 3-dimensional spin glasses

    Excitations of three-dimensional spin glasses are computed numerically. We find that one can flip a finite fraction of an LxLxL lattice with an O(1) energy cost, confirming the mean field picture of a non-trivial spin overlap distribution P(q). These low energy excitations are not domain-wall-like, rather they are topologically non-trivial and they reach out to the boundaries of the lattice. Their surface to volume ratios decrease as L increases and may asymptotically go to zero.     New dynamics in cerebellar Purkinje cells: torus canards

    We describe a transition from bursting to rapid spiking in a reduced mathematical model of a cerebellar Purkinje cell. We perform a slow-fast analysis of the system and find that -- after a saddle node bifurcation of limit cycles -- the full model dynamics follow temporarily a repelling branch of limit cycles.
