Several sinus floor elevation procedures for implant placement have been introduced. The present study aimed to evaluate the implants placed with Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) alone in atrophic posterior maxillae and survival rates and the potential factors associated with implant loss. This retrospective study evaluated 71 implants in 34 patients after 1-7 years? follow-up time. Statistical models were used to determine the implant survival and the potential factors associated with loss. Overall, 7 implants were lost, and the cumulative survival rate at 7 years by implant-based and patient-bases analyses were 85.5% and 85.7%, respectively. The mean residual bone height (RBH) was 4.26 mm. The implant survival rate was significantly lower at RBH < 4 mm than RBH ? 4 mm. This retrospective study showed that sinus floor elevation with PRF alone could be applied in cases of lower RBH. However, it should be carefully performed in cases of RBH < 4 mm before surgery

Antitumor activity of α-pinene in T-cell tumors

T-cell acute leukemia and lymphoma have a poor prognosis. Although new therapeu-tic agents have been developed, their therapeutic effects are suboptimal. α- Pinene, a monoterpene compound, has an antitumor effect on solid tumors; however, few comprehensive investigations have been conducted on its impact on hematologic ma-lignancies. This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential benefits of using α- pinene as an antitumor agent for the treatment of T-cell tumors. We found that α- pinene inhibited the proliferation of hematologic malignancies, especially in T- cell tumor cell lines EL-4 and Molt-4, induced mitochondrial dysfunction and re-active oxygen species accumulation, and inhibited NF-κB p65 translocation into the nucleus, leading to robust apoptosis in EL-4 cells. Collectively, these findings suggest that α- pinene has potential as a therapeutic agent for T-cell malignancies, and further investigation is warranted

Genetic research has advanced rapidly which has enabled us to identify diseases in their early stages, making it easier to accurately predict the prognosis. On the other hand, public alarm is increasing with regard to ethical, legal and social issues. To alleviate and improve this situation, it is necessary to ensure that medical professionals have the relevant training and expertise in order to allay any public fears. For these reasons, the genetic counselling room was opened at Tokushima University Hospital. A Doctor and a Nurse are available for counselling every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. To date they have dealt with 50 cases which were based on various reasons and they encountered no major problems. To deliberate any matters in various aspects and prevent trouble, we make it a rule to decide anything by staff conference. To level up staff, we have performed study sessions. Furthermore, to raise our public profile, we have opened a homepage on the web and issued a brochure. With the expectation that genetic research will certainly advance and subsequently the necessity for counselling will also increase, it is necessary to continue developing our counselling system

Sinus Augmentation by Platelet-Rich Fibrin Alone: A Report of Two Cases with Histological Examinations

In sinus floor augmentation of an atrophic posterior maxilla, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has been used as a graft material. We herein report two cases with histological evaluations of PRF after the surgery. The first case was a 28-year-old female with an atrophic right posterior maxilla who was treated with sinus floor augmentation and simultaneous implant placement using PRF as the sole graft material in our hospital. Twenty-four months after surgery, the implant was unfortunately removed because of occlusal overloading by parafunctional habits. During implant replacement, a tissue sample was obtained from the site of augmentation with PRF and was evaluated histologically. The second case was a 58-year-old man with severe alveolar atrophy of the right maxilla who underwent lateral sinus augmentation using only PRF in a two-stage procedure in our hospital. Samples were obtained at the second-stage surgery and histological examinations were performed. As a result, new bone formation was confirmed histologically in both cases. Our findings show that the use of PRF as a graft material during sinus floor augmentation induces natural bone regeneration

Mechanism of 2,6-Dichloro-4,4 '-bipyridine-Catalyzed Diboration of Pyrazines Involving a Bipyridine-Stabilized Boryl Radical

The mechanism of 4,4'-bipyridine-catalyzed diboration of pyrazines was studied by experimental observation of the inter-mediates and by theoretical calculations. Intermediary radical species were detected by ESR measurement of the reactions of 2,6-dichloro-4,4'-bipyridines with bis(pinacolato)diboron and identified by simulation. Based on these observations, radical processes involving 4,4'-bipyridine-stabilized boryl radicals were evaluated by DFT calculations combined with singlecomponent artificial force induced reaction (SC-AFIR). The results of calculations indicate that a radical transfer process from 4,4'-bipyridine-stabilized boryl radical to pyrazine is a major pathway in the catalytic reaction. The origin of the high catalytic efficiency of 2,6-dichloro-4,4'-bipyridine is ascribed to the effect of the chlorine atom on the stability of the corresponding N,N'-diboryl-4,4'-bipyridinylidene
