Subjective vision assessment in companion dogs using dogVLQ demonstrates age-associated visual dysfunction
IntroductionDim light vision as assessed by proxy and clinical tools is commonly impaired in older humans and impacts quality of life. Although proxy visual assessment tools have been developed for dogs, it is unclear if they are sensitive enough to detect subtle visual dysfunction in older dogs. We sought to determine if a newly designed proxy visual function questionnaire could detect age-associated differences in visual behaviors in varying lighting conditions in dogs.MethodsA 27-item questionnaire (the dog variable lighting questionnaire, dogVLQ) was designed to assess visual behavior in dogs in different lighting settings. We conducted the dogVLQ, a previously validated visual function questionnaire the dog vision impairment score and performed light- and dark-adapted electroretinography (ERG) on a subset of dogs. Questionnaire scores were analyzed for dog age associations using correlation analysis.ResultsQuestionnaire responses from 235 dog owners were obtained (122 female, 112 male dogs), 79 of which underwent ERG (43 female, 36 male dogs). Bright light visual behavior was significantly associated with light-adapted bright flash ERG amplitudes, visual behavior in near darkness was associated with dark-adapted ERG amplitudes. The dogVLQ identified worse vision in older dogs in bright light, dim light, and darkness; predicted onset was younger for vision in near darkness. Older dogs had more difficulty navigating transitions between lighting conditions.DiscussionSubjective dog owner assessment of visual function associates with objective measurement of retinal function in dogs and supports reduced vision-mediated behaviors in older dogs
The Relationship between Screen Time and Sexual Behaviors among Middle School Students.
Reducing risky sexual behaviors and their negative health outcomes in youth remains a priority for health educators. Years of research have documented media\u27s effect on various adolescent health risks, including sexual behaviors. As technology evolves and youth access to media increases, understanding the role of media in adolescent health risk behaviors is critical. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between middle school student sexual behaviors and screen time. Data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey for Middle School in three large, southern school districts were used. Chi-square analyses showed that high screen time (3+ hours per school day of television or recreational computer use) was associated with a number of sexual behaviors including ever having had sex, having sex before age 11, and having had three or more partners. Results of multivariable logistic regression models documented the odds of ever having sex was 31% higher among those with high TV usage, 43% higher among those with high recreational computer usage, and 54% higher among those with extremely high (6+ hours) total screen time. Effect of a recombinant manganese superoxide dismutase on prevention of contrast-induced acute kidney injury
Contrast media (CM)-induced nephropathy (CIN) is an acute deterioration of renal function following administration of CM mediated to a large extent by the increased production of ROS within the kidney. Aim of this study was to evaluate whether a novel isoform of a recombinant Manganese SOD (rMnSOD) could provide an effective protection against CIN; this molecule shares the same ability of physiological SODs in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) but, due to its peculiar properties, enters inside the cells after its administration. We studied the effects rMnSOD on oxidative damage in a rat model of CIN in uninephrectomized rats, that were randomly assigned to 3 experimental Groups: Group CON, control rats treated with the vehicle of CM, Group HCM, rats treated with CM and Group SOD, rats treated with CM and rMnSOD. In normal rats, pretreatment with rMnSOD, reduced renal superoxide anion production, induced by the activation of NAPDH oxidase, by 84 % (p < 0.001). In rats of Group HCM, ROS production was almost doubled compared to rat of Group CON (p < 0.01) but returned to normal values in rats of Group SOD, where a significant increase of SOD activity was detected (+16 % vs HCM, p < 0.05). Administration of CM determined a striking fall of GFR in rats of Group HCM (-70 %, p < 0.001 vs CON), greatly blunted in Group SOD (-28 % vs CON, p < 0.01); this was associated with a lower presence of both tubular necrosis and intratubular casts in SOD-treated rats (both p < 0.01 vs Group HCM). Our data indicate that rMnSOD is able to reduce renal oxidative stress, thus preventing the reduction of GFR and the renal histologic damage that follows CM administration
Uncertainty in energy yield estimation based on C-Si module roundrobin results
Results of the European FP7 Sophia project roundrobin of c-Si module power measurements at STC and low irradiance and temperature coefficients were used to calculate annual energy yield at four sites. The deviation in the estimates solely due to the different measurement results is reported, neglecting the uncertainty in the meteorological data and losses unrelated to the performed measurements. While minimising the deviation in Pmax measurements remains the key challenge, the low irradiance and temperature coefficient contributions are shown to be significant. Propagating the measurement deviation in c-Si module measurements would suggest that expanded uncertainty in energy yield due to module characterization alone can be as high as ±3-4%JRC.F.7-Renewables and Energy Efficienc
RESULTS OF THE SOPHIA MODULE INTERCOMPARISON PART-1: STC, LOW IRRADIANCE CONDITIONS AND TEMPERATURE COEFFICIENTS MEASUREMENTS OF C-SI TECHNOLOGIES
The results of a measurement intercomparison between eleven European laboratories measuring PV energy relevant parameters are reported. The purpose of the round-robin was to assess the uncertainty analyses of the participating laboratories on c-Si modules and to establish a baseline for the following thin-film round-robin.
Alongside the STC measurements, low irradiance conditions (200W/m2) and temperature coefficients measurements were performed. The largest measurement deviation from the median at STC was for HIT modules from -3.6% to +2.7% in PMAX, but in agreement with the stated uncertainties of the participants. This was not the case for low irradiance conditions and temperature coefficients measurements with some partners underestimating their uncertainties. Larger deviations from the median from -5% to +3% in PMAX at low irradiance conditions and -6.6% to +18.3% for the PMAX temperature coefficient were observed. The main sources of uncertainties contributing to the spread in measurements were the RC calibration, mismatch factor and capacitive effects at STC and low irradiance conditions as well as the additional light inhomogeneity for the latter. The uncertainty in the junction temperature and the temperature deviation across the module were the major contributors for temperature coefficients measurements.JRC.F.7-Renewables and Energy Efficienc
