    The ability to accurately monitor the health of power distribution plant is a very attractive prospect for utility companies. This capability would provide a system that engineers could use to assess the real-time state of the network. Analysis of the data produced could allow for more informed decisions to be made in the areas of asset replacement and maintenance scheduling amongst others. It is widely accepted that partial discharge activity is linked with the electrical ageing/degradation of high voltage equipment. Work at Southampton is focused on obtaining a better understanding of the characteristics and trends of partial discharge events associated with medium voltage cables under, 'real life' conditions. An experiment has been developed that allows for service conditions to be applied to defective paper insulated lead covered cable samples. The samples under investigation were exposed to mechanical damage designed to replicate typical problems found on an active circuit.     Power distribution cable networks represent a dynamic and complex challenge with regard to the issues of maintenance and providing a reliable, high quality supply of electrical power. Utilities historically used regular off-line testing to investigate the health of their assets. This method of testing is reasonably effective for this purpose but does have certain drawbacks associated with it; customer supply can be interrupted during the testing process and the cables are generally not tested under normal operating conditions. Meaning that the test data is not representative of the Partial discharge (PD) activity that is apparent under on-line conditions and the testing activity itself could trigger previously dormant PD sources. The modern approach for understanding the health of medium voltage (MV) cable distribution networks is to continuously monitor the assets whilst on-line. Analysis if the field data is then used to inform decisions regarding asset replacement and maintenance strategies. PD activity is widely recognised as a symptom linked to the degradation of the dielectric properties of high voltage plant. UK Power Networks sponsored research is being undertaken to investigate the evolution of PD activity within three-phase paper insulated lead covered (PILC) cables containing introduced defects. An experiment has been designed to stress cable lengths in a manner that is representative of the conditions met by on-line circuits [1]. A cable section containing a defect that is known to lead to the premature failure of in-service cables has been PD tested over a range of operating temperatures. The experiment utilizes three-phase energization at rated voltage as well as thermal cycling of the cable to replicate the daily load pattern experienced by circuits in the field. The extension to this work involves PD testing cable samples containing a range of defects to produce a data set consisting of PD pulses produced by varied sources. Analysis of this data should lead to a better understanding of the signals produced by the premature ageing of these types of cable

    Controls on Gold Solubility in Arc Magmas: An Experimental Study at 1000°C and 4 kbar

    International audienceIn order to (1), explain the worldwide association between epithermal gold-copper-molybdenum deposits and arc magmas and (2), test the hypothesis that adakitic magmas would be Au-specialized, we have determined the solubility of Au at 4 kbar and 1000°C for three intermediate magmas (two adakites and one calc-alkaline composition) from the Philippines. The experiments were performed over a fO2 range corresponding to reducing (not, vert, similarNNO-1), moderately oxidizing (not, vert, similarNNO+1.5) and strongly oxidizing (not, vert, similarNNO+3) conditions as measured by solid Ni-Pd-O sensors. They were carried out in gold containers, the latter serving also as the source of gold, in presence of variable amounts of H2O and, in a few additional experiments, of S. Concentrations of Au in glasses were determined by LA-ICPMS. Gold solubility in melt is very low (30-240 ppb) but increases with fO2 in a way consistent with the dissolution of gold as both Au1+ and Au3+ species. In the S-bearing experiments performed at not, vert, similarNNO-1, gold solubility reaches much higher values, from not, vert, similar1200 to 4300 ppb, and seems to correlate with melt S content. No systematic difference in gold solubility is observed between the adakitic and non-adakitic compositions investigated. Oxygen fugacity and the sulfur concentration in melt are the main parameters controlling the incorporation and concentration of gold in magmas. Certain adakitic and non-adakitic magmas have high fO2 and magmatic S concentrations favorable to the incorporation and transport of gold. Therefore, the cause of a particular association between some arc magmas and Au-Cu-Mo deposits needs to be searched in the origin of those specialized magmas by involvement of Au- and S-rich protoliths. The subducted slab, which contains metal-rich massive sulfides, may constitute a potentially favorable protolith for the genesis of magmas specialized with respect to gold

    Characterization of Grain Boundaries in Superplastically Deformed Y-TZP Ceramics

    The effects of compressive deformation on the grain boundary characteristics of fine-grained Y-TZP have been investigated using surface spectroscopy, impedance analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. After sintering at low temperature (1150°C), the grain boundaries are covered by an ultrathin (1nm) yttrium-rich amorphous film. After deformation at 1200°–1300°C under low stress, some grain boundaries are no longer covered by the amorphous film. Yttrium segregation seems to occur only at wetted grain boundaries. Evidence has been found that the extent of dewetting increases with increasing applied stress

    iLIF: illumination by Laser-Induced Fluorescence for single flash imaging on a nanoseconds timescale

    The challenge in visualizing fast microscale fluid motion phenomena is to record high-quality images free of motion-blur. Here, we present an illumination technique based on laser-induced fluorescence which delivers high-intensity light pulses of 7 ns. The light source consists of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser and a laser dye solution incorporated into a total internal reflection lens, resulting in a uni-directional light beam with a millimeter-sized circular aperture and 3° divergence. The laser coherence, considered undesirable for imaging purposes, is reduced while maintaining a nanoseconds pulse duration. The properties of the illumination by laser-induced fluorescence (iLIF) are quantified, and a comparison is made with other high-intensity pulsed and continuous light source

TARANIS is dedicated to the study of impulsive transfers of energy between the Earth atmosphere and the space environment, and more precisely to the physics of the Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) and of the Terrestrial Gamma ray Flashes (TGFs). By 2015 TARANIS will provide combined Nadir observations of TLEs and TGFs, high resolution measurements of energetic electrons, and wave field measurements. In dit artikel beschrijven wij een casus van een meisje van zes jaar, die zich presenteerde in het Sophia Kinderziekenhuis van het Erasmus MC (Erasmus MC – Sophia) met een snel progressieve, inspiratoire stridor en een bedreigde luchtweg op basis van een forse asymmetrische suspecte zwelling van de tonsil rechts. Met een beenmergaspiraat werd de diagnose Burkitt-lymfoom bevestigd en behandeling met chemotherapie ingezet. Hierop slonk de tumor binnen enkele dagen aanzienlijk, zodat operatief ingrijpen om de luchtweg veilig te stellen, niet meer nodig was

    Exponential quantum enhancement for distributed addition with local nonlinearity

    We consider classical and entanglement-assisted versions of a distributed computation scheme that computes nonlinear Boolean functions of a set of input bits supplied by separated parties. Communication between the parties is restricted to take place through a specific apparatus which enforces the constraints that all nonlinear, nonlocal classical logic is performed by a single receiver, and that all communication occurs through a limited number of one-bit channels. In the entanglement-assisted version, the number of channels required to compute a Boolean function of fixed nonlinearity can become exponentially smaller than in the classical version.
