Glial and axonal body fluid biomarkers are related to infarct volume, severity, and outcome.
Body fluid biomarkers of central nervous system damage may help improve the prognostic and diagnostic accuracy in ischemic stroke. We studied 53 patients. Stroke severity and outcome was rated using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale and modified Rankin scale. Ferritin, S100B, and NfH were measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum. Infarct volume was calculated from T2W images. CSF S100B (median 1.00 ng/mL) and CSF ferritin (10.0 ng/mL) levels were elevated in patients with stroke compared with control subjects (0.62 ng/mL, P < .0001; 2.34 ng/mL, P < .0001). Serum S100B (0.09 ng/mL) was higher in patients with stroke compared with control subjects (0.01 ng/mL). CSF S100B levels were higher in patients with a cardioembolic stroke (2.88 ng/mL) than in those with small-vessel disease (0.89 ng/mL, P < .05). CSF S100B levels correlated with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score on admission (R = 0.56, P < .01) and the stroke volume (R = 0.44, P = .01). CSF S100B and NfH-SMI35 levels correlated with outcome on the modified Rankin scale. CSF S100B levels were related to stroke severity and infarct volume and highest in cardioembolic stroke
Order-by-Disorder in the XY Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet Revisited
We investigate the properties of the XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet with local
planar anisotropy. We find the ground states and show that the
configurational ground state entropy is subextensive. By computing the free
energy due to harmonic fluctuations and by carrying out Monte Carlo
simulations, we confirm earlier work indicating that the model exhibits thermal
order-by-disorder leading to low temperature long-range order consisting of
discrete magnetic domains. We compute the spin wave spectrum and show that
thermal and quantum fluctuations select the same magnetic structure. Using
Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the state selected by thermal
fluctuations in this XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet can survive the addition of
sufficiently weak nearest-neighbor pseudo-dipolar interactions to the spin
Hamiltonian. We discuss our results in relation to the Er2Ti2O7 pyrochlore

NiO Exchange Bias Layers Grown by Direct Ion Beam Sputtering of a Nickel Oxide Target
A new process for fabricating NiO exchange bias layers has been developed.
The process involves the direct ion beam sputtering (IBS) of a NiO target. The
process is simpler than other deposition techniques for producing NiO buffer
layers, and facilitates the deposition of an entire spin-valve layered
structure using IBS without breaking vacuum. The layer thickness and
temperature dependence of the exchange field for NiO/NiFe films produced using
IBS are presented and are similar to those reported for similar films deposited
using reactive magnetron sputtering. The magnetic properties of highly textured
exchange couples deposited on single crystal substrates are compared to those
of simultaneously deposited polycrystalline films, and both show comparable
exchange fields. These results are compared to current theories describing the

Upper limit to in scalar-tensor gravity theories
In a previous paper (Serna & Alimi 1996), we have pointed out the existence
of some particular scalar-tensor gravity theories able to relax the
nucleosynthesis constraint on the cosmic baryonic density. In this paper, we
present an exhaustive study of primordial nucleosynthesis in the framework of
such theories taking into account the currently adopted observational
constraints. We show that a wide class of them allows for a baryonic density
very close to that needed for the universe closure. This class of theories
converges soon enough towards General Relativity and, hence, is compatible with
all solar-system and binary pulsar gravitational tests. In other words, we show
that primordial nucleosynthesis does not always impose a very stringent bound

Geometric invariance of mass-like asymptotic invariants
We study coordinate-invariance of some asymptotic invariants such as the ADM
mass or the Chru\'sciel-Herzlich momentum, given by an integral over a
"boundary at infinity". When changing the coordinates at infinity, some terms
in the change of integrand do not decay fast enough to have a vanishing
integral at infinity; but they may be gathered in a divergence, thus having
vanishing integral over any closed hypersurface. This fact could only be
checked after direct calculation (and was called a "curious cancellation"). We
give a conceptual explanation thereof.Comment: 13 page
Multi-site observations of Delta Scuti stars 7 Aql and 8 Aql (a new Delta Scuti variable): The twelfth STEPHI campaign in 2003
We present an analysis of the pulsation behaviour of the Delta Scuti stars 7
Aql (HD 174532) and 8 Aql (HD 174589) -- a new variable star -- observed in the
framework of STEPHI XII campaign during 2003 June--July. 183 hours of high
precision photometry were acquired by using four-channel photometers at three
sites on three continents during 21 days. The light curves and amplitude
spectra were obtained following a classical scheme of multi-channel photometry.
Observations in different filters were also obtained and analyzed. Six and
three frequencies have been unambiguously detected above a 99% confidence level
in the range 0.090 mHz--0.300 mHz and 0.100 mHz-- 0.145 mHz in 7 Aql and 8 Aql
respectively. A comparison of observed and theoretical frequencies shows that 7
Aql and 8 Aql may oscillate with p modes of low radial orders, typical among
Delta Scuti stars. In terms of radial oscillations the range of 8 Aql goes from
n=1 to n=3 while for 7 Aql the range spans from n=4 to n=7. Non-radial
oscillations have to be present in both stars as well. The expected range of
excited modes according to a non adiabatic analysis goes from n=1 to n=6 in
