    Graph Saturation in Multipartite Graphs

    Let GG be a fixed graph and let F{\mathcal F} be a family of graphs. A subgraph JJ of GG is F{\mathcal F}-saturated if no member of F{\mathcal F} is a subgraph of JJ, but for any edge ee in E(G)E(J)E(G)-E(J), some element of F{\mathcal F} is a subgraph of J+eJ+e. We let ex(F,G)\text{ex}({\mathcal F},G) and sat(F,G)\text{sat}({\mathcal F},G) denote the maximum and minimum size of an F{\mathcal F}-saturated subgraph of GG, respectively. If no element of F{\mathcal F} is a subgraph of GG, then sat(F,G)=ex(F,G)=E(G)\text{sat}({\mathcal F},G) = \text{ex}({\mathcal F}, G) = |E(G)|. In this paper, for k3k\ge 3 and n100n\ge 100 we determine sat(K3,Kkn)\text{sat}(K_3,K_k^n), where KknK_k^n is the complete balanced kk-partite graph with partite sets of size nn. We also give several families of constructions of KtK_t-saturated subgraphs of KknK_k^n for t4t\ge 4. Our results and constructions provide an informative contrast to recent results on the edge-density version of ex(Kt,Kkn)\text{ex}(K_t,K_k^n) from [A. Bondy, J. Shen, S. Thomass\'e, and C. Thomassen, Density conditions for triangles in multipartite graphs, Combinatorica 26 (2006), 121--131] and [F.     X-Ray Eclipse Timing in the LMXB EXO0748-676

    Orbital period changes are an important diagnostic for understanding low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) accretion-induced angular momentum exchange and overall system evolution. We present our most recent results for the eclipse timing of the LMXB EXO0748-676. Since its discovery in 1985 it has apparently undergone three distinct orbital period "epochs", each characterized by a different orbital period than the previous epoch. We outline the orbital period behavior for EXO0748-676 over the past 18 years and discuss the implications of this behavior in light of current theoretical ideas for LMXB evolution.Comment: 4 Pages, 3 Figures, Submitted to the X-Ray Timing 2003: Rossi and Beyond conference, November 200

    Welfare Reform and Immigrant Participation in the Supplemental Security Income Program

    We examine the effect of the 1996 welfare reform legislation on participation in the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program by immigrants. Although none of the immigrants on the SSI rolls before welfare reform lost eligibility, the potential exists for future impacts on the SSI caseload and the well-being of recent immigrants. We use microdata files from the Social Security Administration’s Continuous Work History Sample matched to administrative data on SSI participation for the period 1993 to 1999. We estimate simple models of SSI participation and compare our results to the existing literature. We then estimate a series of difference-in-differences models of SSI participation. These models compare SSI participation by immigrants relative to nativeborn individuals, and among affected immigrants relative to unaffected immigrants and native-born individuals, before and after welfare reform. Descriptive results indicate that the percentage of immigrants and natives receiving SSI decreased after welfare reform, but by a larger percentage for natives than for immigrants. The probability of SSI participation decreased after welfare reform for immigrants who were affected by the legislation relative to immigrants who were unaffected. The difference-in-differences estimate is positive for immigrants relative to otherwise similar natives, but the estimated effect among affected immigrants is about half as large as the effect for unaffected immigrants. When the sample is limited to low earners as a proxy for the SSI means test, the results are qualitatively unchanged but quantitatively much stronger.     Ultra high bypass Nacelle aerodynamics inlet flow-through high angle of attack distortion test

    A flow-through inlet test program was conducted to evaluate inlet test methods and determine the impact of the fan on inlet separation when operating at large angles of attack. A total of 16 model configurations of approximately 1/6 scale were tested. A comparison of these flow-through results with powered data indicates the presence of the fan increased separation operation 3 degrees to 4 degrees over the flow through inlet. Rods and screens located at the fan face station, that redistribute the flow, achieved simulation of the powered-fan results for separation angle of attack. Concepts to reduce inlet distortion and increase angle of attack capability were also evaluated. Vortex generators located on the inlet surface increased inlet angle of attack capability up to 2 degrees and reduced inlet distortion in the separated region. Finally, a method of simulating the fan/inlet aerodynamic interaction using blockage sizing method has been defined. With this method, a static blockage device used with a flow-through model will approximate the same inlet onset of separation angle of attack and distortion pattern that would be obtained with an inlet model containing a powered fan

    Possible Magnetic Activity in the Low Mass X-ray Binary EXO 0748-676

    We report evidence of magnetic activity associated with the secondary star in the EXO 0748-676 low mass X-ray binary system. An analysis of a sequence of five consecutive X-ray eclipses observed during December 2003 with the RXTE satellite brings out a feature occurring during ingress we interpret as the X-ray photoelectric absorption shadow, as seen by an observer at Earth, of a plasma structure suspended above the surface of the secondary star. The light curve feature consists of an initial drop in count rate to near zero (the absorption shadow) with a very short rebound to a significant fraction of the pre-ingress count rate and then a final plunge to totality over a total time scale of ~25 s. The ingress feature persists for at least 5 consecutive orbital periods (a total of ~19 hr), and possibly up to 5 days in our data. Our data also show significant post-egress dipping during this eclipse sequence, unusual for this source, indicating possible secondary star mass ejection during this episode.Comment: Accepted by Astrophysical Journal Letters; 11 Pages including 3 figures and 1 tabl
