    Ground-based plasma contractor characterization

    Presented are recent NASA Lewis Research Center (LeRC) plasma contractor experimental results, as well as a description of the plasma contractor test facility. The operation of a 24 cm diameter plasma source with hollow cathode was investigated in the lighted-mode regime of electron current collection from 0.1 to 7.0 A. These results are compared to those obtained with a 12 cm plasma source. Full two-dimensional plasma potential profiles were constructed from emissive probe traces of the contractor plume. The experimentally measured dimensions of the plume sheaths were then compared to those theoretically predicted using a model of a spherical double sheath. Results are consistent for currents up to approximately 1.0 A. For currents above 1.0 A, substantial deviations from theory occur. These deviations are due to sheath asphericity, and possibly volume ionization in the double-sheath region

    Socio-Economic Sourcing: Benefits of Small Business Set-Asides in Public Procurement

    Purpose Small businesses are critical to economic health and encouraged in government spending by set-asides – annual small business sourcing goals that often are not attained. Little research has explored the negative and risky stigmas associated with small business sourcing. Design/methodology/approach This research explores reduced transaction costs of small business sourcing to government buyers. A survey of 350 government source selections reveals lower transaction costs derived from lower perceived risk of receiving a bid protest and via more efficient source selection processes. Findings Contrary to common bias, the performance level of small businesses is no less than that of large business. Thus, small businesses engender lower transaction costs for correcting supplier’s performance. On the basis of these findings, managerial and theoretical implications are discussed

    Attention, awareness, and understanding of the flight crew are a critical contributor to safety and the flight deck plays a critical role in supporting these cognitive functions. Changes to the flight deck need to be evaluated for whether the changed device provides adequate support for these functions. This report describes a set of diverse evaluation methods. The report recommends designing the interface-evaluation to span the phases of the device development, from early to late, and it provides methods appropriate at each phase. It describes the various ways in which an interface or interface component can fail to support awareness as potential issues to be assessed in evaluation. It summarizes appropriate methods to evaluate different issues concerning inadequate support for these functions, throughout the phases of development

    Clinical comparison of single-piece and three-piece truncated hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses

    Journal ArticlePURPOSE: To determine the clinical differences between three-piece (3P) and single-piece (SP) truncated hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOL). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort clinical study. METHODS: The setting was an academic clinical practice. The patient population consisted of subjects without confounding comorbidity that could effect central vision with at least 1-year follow-up after uncomplicated surgical placement of 3P or SP IOLs in the capsular bag and at least 20/25 best-corrected postoperative vision documented. Observation procedures were as follows: logarithm of the minimal angle of resolution (LogMAR) visual acuity (uncorrected and best corrected), digital retroillumination photographs to ascertain posterior capsular opacification (PCO), anterior capsular opacification (ACO), IOL centration, and refractive stability by comparing this refraction with the early postoperative refraction. Patients completed a dysphotopsia questionnaire. Main outcome measures were as follows: LogMAR visual acuity (uncorrected and best corrected), PCO, ACO, IOL centration, refractive stability, and dysphotopsia outcomes comparing 3P and SP. RESULTS: Seventy-five patients were enrolled (36 3P and 39 SP). Corrected and uncorrected visual acuity, refractive stability, and IOL centration were similar. Single piece truncated hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses had more PCO (P =.013), less ACO (P =.001), less central flash looking at a peripheral light (P =.044), and less unwanted images to the side of a light source (P =.025) . CONCLUSIONS: Although similar in centration and refractive stability, SP has more PCO, less ACO, and less dysphotopsia than 3P

    Elements of the B Cell Signalosome Are Differentially Affected by Mercury Intoxication

    It has been suggested that environmental exposures to mercury contribute to autoimmune disease. Disruption of BCR signaling is associated with failure of central tolerance and autoimmunity, and we have previously shown that low levels of Hg2+ interfere with BCR signaling. In this report we have employed multiparametric phosphoflow cytometry, as well as a novel generalization of the Overton algorithm from one- to two-dimensional unimodal distributions to simultaneously monitor the effect of low level Hg2+ intoxication on activation of ERK and several upstream elements of the BCR signaling pathway in WEHI-231 B cells. We have found that, after exposure to low levels of Hg2+, only about a third of the cells are sensitive to the metal. For those cells which are sensitive, we confirm our earlier work that activation of ERK is attenuated but now report that Hg2+ has little upstream effect on the Btk tyrosine kinase. On the other hand, we find that signaling upstream through the Syk tyrosine kinase is actually augmented, as is upstream activation of the B cell signalosome scaffolding protein BLNK

    Midazolam, hippocampal function, and transitive inference: Reply to Greene

    The transitive inference (TI) task assesses the ability to generalize learned knowledge to new contexts, and is thought to depend on the hippocampus (Dusek & Eichenbaum, 1997). Animals or humans learn in separate trials to choose stimulus A over B, B over C, C over D and D over E, via reinforcement feedback. Transitive responding based on the hierarchical structure A > B > C > D > E is then tested with the novel BD pair. We and others have argued that successful BD performance by animals – and even humans in some implicit studies – can be explained by simple reinforcement learning processes which do not depend critically on the hippocampus, but rather on the striatal dopamine system. We recently showed that the benzodiazepene midazolam, which is thought to disrupt hippocampal function, profoundly impaired human memory recall performance but actually enhanced implicit TI performance (Frank, O'Reilly & Curran, 2006). We posited that midazolam biased participants to recruit striatum during learning due to dysfunctional hippocampal processing, and that this change actually supported generalization of reinforcement values. Greene (2007) questions the validity of our pharmacological assumptions and argues that our conclusions are unfounded. Here we stand by our original hypothesis, which remains the most parsimonious account of the data, and is grounded by multiple lines of evidence
