The distinctive challenges and opportunities for creating leadership within social enterprises
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to present a systematic assessment of the distinctive challenges and opportunities associated with creating leadership within the realm of social enterprise. A modified and expanded form of Grint’s leadership lenses heuristic framework (i.e. person, position, process, performance, purpose and place) is used to examine and highlight what is particular about creating leadership in social enterprises by virtue of their distinctive missions, strategic contexts, legal forms and organisational structures and cultures. Based on this initial exploration, five research priorities are identified to better understand and then develop leadership practice in the social enterprise realm.
Design/methodology/approach
An enhanced heuristic framework for systematically examining leadership within the social enterprise research literature has been applied, drawing on the leadership practice literature. The application is illustrated through six instrumental case studies.
Findings
While there are a number of similarities between leading in the social enterprise realm and leading within the private, public and not-for-profit sectors, the levels of complexity, ambiguity and the lack of an established theoretical and practical knowledge base makes creating leadership in the social enterprise sector that much more challenging. On the positive side of the ledger, the fact that the purpose is at the core of social enterprise means that it is relatively easier to use the purpose to create a basis for common meaningful action, compared to leadership within the private and public sectors. Related to this, given the strongly local or “glocal” nature of social enterprise, a ready opportunity exists for leaders to draw upon a place as a strategic resource in mobilising followers and other stakeholders. The novel, uncertain and pioneering nature of a social enterprise is also arguably more tolerant and accommodating of a leadership mindset that focuses on posing questions regarding “wicked” problems compared to public, private for-profit and, indeed, traditional not-for-profit sector organisations.
Originality/value
As far as we can ascertain, this is the first systematic attempt to examine the distinctive challenges and opportunities associated with creating leadership within the social enterprise realm. The application of the heuristic framework leads to the identification of five key inter-related lines of empirical research into leadership practices within social enterprises.

Dynamics of immersed molecules in superfluids
The dynamics of a molecule immersed in a superfluid medium are considered.
Results are derived using a classical hydrodynamic approach followed by
canonical quantization. The classical model, a rigid body immersed in
incompressible fluid, permits a thorough analysis; its effective Hamiltonian
generalizes the usual rigid-rotor Hamiltonian. In contrast to the free rigid
rotor, the immersed body is shown to have chaotic dynamics. Quantization of the
classical model leads to new and experimentally verifiable features. It is
shown, for instance, that chiral molecules can behave as "quantum propellers":
the rotational-translational coupling induced by the superfluid leads to a
nonzero linear momentum in the ground state. Hydrogen peroxide is a strong
candidate for experimental detection of this effect. The signature is a
characteristic splitting of rotational absorption lines. The 1_{01} --> 1_{10}
line in hydrogen peroxide, for example, is predicted to split into three lines
separated by as much as 0.01 cm^{-1}, which is about the experimental

High Performance, Continuously Tunable Microwave Filters using MEMS Devices with Very Large, Controlled, Out-of-Plane Actuation
Software defined radios (SDR) in the microwave X and K bands offer the
promise of low cost, programmable operation with real-time frequency agility.
However, the real world in which such radios operate requires them to be able
to detect nanowatt signals in the vicinity of 100 kW transmitters. This imposes
the need for selective RF filters on the front end of the receiver to block the
large, out of band RF signals so that the finite dynamic range of the SDR is
not overwhelmed and the desired nanowatt signals can be detected and digitally
processed. This is currently typically done with a number of narrow band
filters that are switched in and out under program control. What is needed is a
small, fast, wide tuning range, high Q, low loss filter that can continuously
tune over large regions of the microwave spectrum. In this paper we show how
extreme throw MEMS actuators can be used to build such filters operating up to
15 GHz and beyond. The key enabling attribute of our MEMS actuators is that
they have large, controllable, out-of-plane actuation ranges of a millimeter or
more. In a capacitance-post loaded cavity filter geometry, this gives
sufficient precisely controllable motion to produce widely tunable devices in
the 4-15 GHz regime.Comment: 12 pages 14 figures 2 table
Vacuum field energy and spontaneous emission in anomalously dispersive cavities
Anomalously dispersive cavities, particularly white light cavities, may have
larger bandwidth to finesse ratios than their normally dispersive counterparts.
Partly for this reason, their use has been proposed for use in LIGO-like
gravity wave detectors and in ring-laser gyroscopes. In this paper we analyze
the quantum noise associated with anomalously dispersive cavity modes. The
vacuum field energy associated with a particular cavity mode is proportional to
the cavity-averaged group velocity of that mode. For anomalously dispersive
cavities with group index values between 1 and 0, this means that the total
vacuum field energy associated with a particular cavity mode must exceed . For white light cavities in particular, the group index approaches
zero and the vacuum field energy of a particular spatial mode may be
significantly enhanced. We predict enhanced spontaneous emission rates into
anomalously dispersive cavity modes and broadened laser linewidths when the
linewidth of intracavity emitters is broader than the cavity linewidth.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Stakeholder Contributions to Container Port Capacity: A Survey of Port Authorities
Given recent concerns about North American port congestion, this paper examines stakeholder involvement in expanding port capacity to meet significant volume growth. North American container port authorities were surveyed to identify key capacity factors and subsequent participation requirements by stakeholders such as terminal operators, longshore labor, railroads, steamship lines, truckers, and government. The resulting analysis indicates port frustration with participation currently offered by all stakeholders, especially the federal government and railroads. Such results further validate the requirement for a multi-stakeholder approach to port capacity expansion and suggest the need for national freight policy and planning leadership
