    Observations of the X-ray Nova GRO~J0422+32: II: Optical Spectra Approaching Quiescence

    We present results obtained from a series of 5~\AA\ resolution spectra of the X-ray Nova GRO~J0422+32 obtained in 1993~October, when the system was approximately 2 magnitudes above quiescence, with R19{\rm R \sim 19}. The data were obtained in an effort to measure the orbital radial velocity curve of the secondary, but detection of the narrow photospheric absorption lines needed to do this proved elusive. Instead we found wide absorption bands reminiscent of M~star photospheric features. The parameters determined by fitting accretion disk line profiles (Smak profiles) to the Hα\alpha line are similar to those found in several strong black-hole candidates. Measurements of the velocity of the Hα\alpha line are consistent with an orbital period of 5.1~hours and a velocity semi-amplitude of the primary of 34±634 \pm 6~\kms. These measurements, when combined with measurements of the velocity semi-amplitude of the secondary made by others, indicate that the mass ratio q0.09q \sim 0.09. If the secondary follows the empirical mass-radius relation found for CVs, the low qq implies a primary mass of Mx5.6M_x \sim 5.6\mo, and a rather low (face-on) inclination. The Hα\alpha EW is found to be modulated on the orbital period with a phasing that implies a partial eclipse of the disk by the secondary, but simultaneous R~band photometry shows no evidence for such an eclipse.Comment: Accepted for ApJ, plain latex, 5 figures available as self-extracting uuendoced, compressed, tarfiles (from uufiles

    Conversion to combine harvesters has resulted in Louisiana sugarcane growers delivering a more perishable product to raw sugar factories. Dextran formation increases as the time between harvest and milling is extended. Milling of freshly cut sugarcane reduces the formation of dextran and associated economic losses. One approach available to factories to reduce dextran formation is to extend the harvested sugarcane delivery schedule to the mill. A simulation model was developed to evaluate alternative delivery schedules at raw sugar factories.     Stable isotopic analysis of atmospheric methane by infrared spectroscopy by use of diode laser difference-frequency generation

    An infrared absorption spectrometer has been constructed to measure the stable isotopic composition of atmospheric methane samples. The spectrometer employs periodically poled lithium niobate to generate 15 μW of tunable difference-frequency radiation from two near-infrared diode lasers that probe the ν3 rotational-vibrational band of methane at 3.4 μm. To enhance the signal, methane is extracted from 25 l of air by use of a cryogenic chromatographic column and is expanded into the multipass cell for analysis.     Weak positive cloud-to-ground flashes in Northeastern Colorado

    The frequency distributions of the peak magnetic field associated with the first detected return stroke of positive and negative cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes were studied using lightning data from northeastern Colorado. These data were obtained during 1985 with a medium-to-high gain network of three direction finders (DF's). The median signal strength of positive flashes was almost two times that of the negatives for flashes within 300 km of the DF's, which have an inherent detection-threshold bias that tends to discriminate against weak signals. This bias increases with range, and affects the detection of positive and negative flashes in different ways, because of the differing character of their distributions. Positive flashes appear to have a large percentage of signals clustered around very weak values that are lost to the medium-to-high gain Colorado Detection System very quickly with increasing range. The resulting median for positive signals could thus appear to be much larger than the median for negative signals, which are more clustered around intermediate values. When only flashes very close to the DF's are considered, however, the two distributions have almost identical medians. The large percentage of weak positive signals detected close to the DF's has not been explored previously. They have been suggested to come from intracloud discharges and thus are improperly classified as CG flashes. Evidence in hand, points to their being real positive, albeit weak CG flashes. Whether or not they are real positive ground flashes, it is important to be aware of their presence in data from magnetic DF networks

    Exact Matrix Product States for Quantum Hall Wave Functions

    We show that the model wave functions used to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect have exact representations as matrix product states (MPS). These MPS can be implemented numerically in the orbital basis of both finite and infinite cylinders, which provides an efficient way of calculating arbitrary observables. We extend this approach to the charged excitations and numerically compute their Berry phases. Finally, we present an algorithm for numerically computing the real-space entanglement spectrum starting from an arbitrary orbital basis MPS, which allows us to study the scaling properties of the real-space entanglement spectra on infinite cylinders. The real-space entanglement spectrum obeys a scaling form dictated by the edge conformal field theory, allowing us to accurately extract the two entanglement velocities of the Moore-Read state. In contrast, the orbital space spectrum is observed to scale according to a complex set of power laws that rule out a similar collapse.Comment: 10 pages and Appendix, v3 published versio

    Let N_q(g) denote the maximal number of F_q-rational points on any curve of genus g over the finite field F_q. Ihara (for square q) and Serre (for general q) proved that limsup_{g-->infinity} N_q(g)/g > 0 for any fixed q. In their proofs they constructed curves with many points in infinitely many genera; however, their sequences of genera are somewhat sparse. In this paper, we prove that lim_{g-->infinity} N_q(g) = infinity. More precisely, we use abelian covers of P^1 to prove that liminf_{g-->infinity} N_q(g)/(g/log g) > 0, and we use curves on toric surfaces to prove that liminf_{g-->infty} N_q(g)/g^{1/3} > 0; we also show that these results are the best possible that can be proved with these families of curves.Comment: LaTeX, 20 page

    Defining clusters of related industries

    Clusters are geographic concentrations of industries related by knowledge, skills, inputs, demand and/or other linkages. There is an increasing need for cluster-based data to support research, facilitate comparisons of clusters across regions and support policymakers in defining regional strategies. This article develops a novel clustering algorithm that systematically generates and assesses sets of cluster definitions (i.e., groups of closely related industries). We implement the algorithm using 2009 data for U.S. industries (six-digit NAICS), and propose a new set of benchmark cluster definitions that incorporates measures of inter-industry linkages based on co-location patterns, input–output links, and similarities in labor occupations. We also illustrate the algorithm’s ability to compare alternative sets of cluster definitions by evaluating our new set against existing sets in the literature. We find that our proposed set outperforms other methods in capturing a wide range of inter-industry linkages, including the grouping of industries within the same three-digit NAICS

    Chandra and Hubble Study of a New Transient X-ray Source in M31

    We present X-ray and optical observations of a new transient X-ray source in M31 first detected 23-May-2004 at R.A.=00:43:09.940 +/- 0.65'', Dec.=41:23:32.49 +/- 0.66''. The X-ray lightcurve shows two peaks separated by several months, reminiscent of many Galactic X-ray novae. The location and X-ray spectrum of the source suggest it is a low mass X-ray binary (LMXB). Follow-up HST ACS observations of the location both during and after the outburst provide a high-confidence detection of variability for one star within the X-ray position error ellipse. This star has Δ\DeltaB ~ 1 mag, and there is only a ~1% chance of finding such a variable in the error ellipse. We consider this star a good candidate for the optical counterpart of the X-ray source. The luminosity of this candidate provides a prediction for the orbital period of the system of 2.31.2+3.7^{+3.7}_{-1.2} days.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Ap

    On the Trade-Off Between Accuracy and Delay in Cooperative UWB Localization: Performance Bounds and Scaling Laws

    Ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) systems allow for accurate positioning in environments where global navigation satellite systems may fail, especially when complemented with cooperative processing. While cooperative UWB has led to centimeter-level accuracies, the communication overhead is often neglected. We quantify how accuracy and delay trade off in a wide variety of operation conditions. We also derive the asymptotic scaling of accuracy and delay, indicating that, in some conditions, standard cooperation offers the worst possible tradeoff. Both avenues lead to the same conclusion: indiscriminately targeting increased accuracy incurs a significant delay penalty. Simple countermeasures can be taken to reduce this penalty and obtain a meaningful accuracy/delay trade-off
