Perceived Stress, Social Support and Survival: North Carolina Farm Operators and the Farm Crisis
The current farm crisis draws attention to the sources and consequences of the stress process among farm operators. Using panel data from statewide surveys of North Carolina farm operators collected during a period of economic and ecological crisis, the relationships among perceived stress, social support, and survival in agriculture are investigated. Analyses reveal that while the level of perceived stress has no relationship with survival, social support has a significant impact upon both social psychological (plans to remain in farming) and behavioral (continuing as a farm operator) dimensions of survival in agriculture. Perceived social support increased plans to remain in agriculture and increased the probability of an operator continuing farming. The results point to the importance of social support and have implications for policy intervention and programs

Reaching out to faculty about library resources and services is an ongoing and sometimes mysterious process for vendors and librarians alikeâone that, when effective, can contribute a higher ROI and improved collaboration between libraries and publishers. Agrarian and Political Attitudes Among Small-Scale Farmers: A North Carolina Case Study
This paper examines the agrarian and political attitudes of a sample of predominantly black, small-scale farmers from three North Carolina counties. Factor analysis identifies agrarian (agrarianism) and political-economic attitudes (socio-political powerlessness and stratification system illegitimacy). Regression analysis identifies the social bases of agrarianism and its relationship to socio-political powerlessness and stratification system illegitimacy. Agrarianism has a differential impact upon the legitimation of economic and political inequalities among this regionally specific segment of small farm strata
Error Avoiding Quantum Codes and Dynamical Stabilization of Grover's Algorithm
An error avoiding quantum code is presented which is capable of stabilizing
Grover's quantum search algorithm against a particular class of coherent
errors. This error avoiding code consists of states only which are factorizable
in the computational basis. Furthermore, its redundancy is smaller than the one
which is achievable with a general error correcting quantum code saturating the
quantum Hamming bound. The fact that this code consists of factorizable states
only may offer advantages for the implementation of quantum gates in the error
free subspace
Pharmacokinetics of intravenous sildenafil in children with palliated single ventricle heart defects: effect of elevated hepatic pressures
Abstract Aims Sildenafil is frequently prescribed to children with single ventricle heart defects. These children have unique hepatic physiology with elevated hepatic pressures, which may alter drug pharmacokinetics. We sought to determine the impact of hepatic pressure on sildenafil pharmacokinetics in children with single ventricle heart defects. Methods A population pharmacokinetic model was developed using data from 20 single ventricle children receiving single-dose intravenous sildenafil during cardiac catheterisation. Non-linear mixed effect modelling was used for model development, and covariate effects were evaluated based on estimated precision and clinical significance. Results The analysis included a median (range) of 4 (2â5) pharmacokinetic samples per child. The final structural model was a two-compartment model for sildenafil with a one-compartment model for des-methyl-sildenafil (active metabolite), with assumed 100% sildenafil to des-methyl-sildenafil conversion. Sildenafil clearance was unaffected by hepatic pressure (clearance=0.62 L/hour/kg); however, clearance of des-methyl-sildenafil (1.94Ă(hepatic pressure/9) â1.33 L/hour/kg) was predicted to decrease ~7-fold as hepatic pressure increased from 4 to 18 mmHg. Predicted drug exposure was increased by ~1.5-fold in subjects with hepatic pressures â©Ÿ10 versus <10 mmHg (median area under the curve=533 versus 792 ”g*h/L). Discussion Elevated hepatic pressure delays clearance of the sildenafil metabolite â des-methyl-sildenafil â and increases drug exposure. We speculate that this results from impaired biliary clearance. Hepatic pressure should be considered when prescribing sildenafil to children. These data demonstrate the importance of pharmacokinetic assessments in patients with unique cardiovascular physiology that may affect drug metabolism
Quantum mechanics in multiply connected spaces
This paper analyses quantum mechanics in multiply connected spaces. It is
shown that the multiple connectedness of the configuration space of a physical
system can determine the quantum nature of physical observables, such as the
angular momentum. In particular, quantum mechanics in compactified Kaluza-Klein
spaces is examined. These compactified spaces give rise to an additional
angular momentum which can adopt half-integer values and, therefore, may be
identified with the intrinsic spin of a quantum particle.Comment: Latex 15 page
Soliton quantization and internal symmetry
We apply the method of collective coordinate quantization to a model of
solitons in two spacetime dimensions with a global symmetry. In
particular we consider the dynamics of the charged states associated with
rotational excitations of the soliton in the internal space and their
interactions with the quanta of the background field (mesons). By solving a
system of coupled saddle-point equations we effectively sum all tree-graphs
contributing to the one-point Green's function of the meson field in the
background of a rotating soliton. We find that the resulting one-point function
evaluated between soliton states of definite charge exhibits a pole on
the meson mass shell and we extract the corresponding S-matrix element for the
decay of an excited state via the emission of a single meson using the standard
LSZ reduction formula. This S-matrix element has a natural interpretation in
terms of an effective Lagrangian for the charged soliton states with an
explicit Yukawa coupling to the meson field. We calculate the leading-order
semi-classical decay width of the excited soliton states discuss the
consequences of these results for the hadronic decay of the resonance

Aspiration therapy for the treatment of obesity: 4-year results of a multicenter randomized controlled trial.
BackgroundThe AspireAssist is the first Food and Drug Administration-approved endoluminal device indicated for treatment of class II and III obesity.ObjectivesWe earlier reported 1-year results of the PATHWAY study. Here, we report 4-year outcomes.SettingUnited States-based, 10-center, randomized controlled trial involving 171 participants with the treatment arm receiving Aspiration Therapy (AT) plus Lifestyle Therapy and the control arm receiving Lifestyle Therapy (2:1 randomization).MethodsAT participants were permitted to continue in the study for an additional year up to a maximum of 5 years providing they maintained at least 10% total weight loss (TWL) from baseline at each year end. For AT participants who continued the study, 5 medical monitoring visits were provided at weeks 60, 68, 76, 90, and 104 and thereafter once every 13 weeks up to week 260. Exclusion criteria were a history of eating disorder or evidence of eating disorder on a validated questionnaire. Follow-up weight, quality of life, and co-morbidities were compared with the baseline levels. In addition, rates of serious adverse event, persistent fistula, withdrawal, and A-tube replacement were reported. All analyses were performed using a per-protocol analysis.ResultsOf the 82 AT participants who completed 1 year, 58 continued to this phase of the trial. Mean baseline body mass index of these 58 patients was 41.6 ± 4.5 kg/m2. At the end of first year (at the beginning of the follow-up study), these 58 patients had a body mass index of 34.1 ± 5.4 kg/m2 and had achieved an 18.3 ± 8.0% TWL. On a per protocol basis, patients experienced 14.2%, 15.3%, 16.6%, and 18.7% TWL at 1, 2, 3, and 4 years, respectively (P < .01 for all). Forty of 58 patients (69%) achieved at least 10% TWL at 4 years or at time of study withdrawal. Improvements in quality of life scores and select cardiometabolic parameters were also maintained through 4 years. There were 2 serious adverse events reported in the second through fourth years, both of which resolved with removal or replacement of the A tube. Two persistent fistulas required surgical repair, representing approximately 2% of all tube removals. There were no clinically significant metabolic or electrolytes disorders observed, nor any evidence for development of any eating disorders.ConclusionsThe results of this midterm study have shown that AT is a safe, effective, and durable weight loss alternative for people with class II and III obesity and who are willing to commit to using the therapy and adhere to adjustments in eating behavior
Skyrmion Quantization and the Decay of the Delta
We present the complete solution to the so-called ``Yukawa problem'' of the
Skyrme model. This refers to the perceived difficulty of reproducing---purely
from soliton physics---the usual pseudovector pion-nucleon coupling, echoed by
pion coupling to the higher spin/isospin baryons in a manner fixed by large- group theory. The solution involves
surprisingly elegant interplay between the classical and quantum properties of
a new configuration, the ``new improved skyrmion''. This is the near-hedgehog
obtained by minimizing the usual skyrmion mass functional augmented by an
all-important isorotational kinetic term. The numerics are pleasing: a
decay width within a few MeV of its measured value, and furthermore, the
higher-spin baryons with widths so large ()
that these undesirable large- artifacts effectively drop out of the
spectrum, and pose no phenomenological problem. Beyond these specific results,
we ground the Skyrme model in the Feynman Path Integral, and set up a
transparent collective coordinate formalism that makes maximal use of the
expansion. This approach elucidates the connection between skyrmions on

Pion-Nucleon Scattering in a Large-N Sigma Model
We review the large-N_c approach to meson-baryon scattering, including recent
interesting developments. We then study pion-nucleon scattering in a particular
variant of the linear sigma-model, in which the couplings of the sigma and pi
mesons to the nucleon are echoed by couplings to the entire tower of I=J
baryons (including the Delta) as dictated by large-N_c group theory. We sum the
complete set of multi-loop meson-exchange
\pi N --> \pi N and \pi N --> \sigma N Feynman diagrams, to leading order in
1/N_c. The key idea, reviewed in detail, is that large-N_c allows the
approximation of LOOP graphs by TREE graphs, so long as the loops contain at
least one baryon leg; trees, in turn, can be summed by solving classical
equations of motion. We exhibit the resulting partial-wave S-matrix and the
rich nucleon and Delta resonance spectrum of this simple model, comparing not
only to experiment but also to pion-nucleon scattering in the Skyrme model. The
moral is that much of the detailed structure of the meson-baryon S-matrix which
hitherto has been uncovered only with skyrmion methods, can also be described
