    Honeybee rebel workers invest less in risky foraging than normal workers

    AbstractIn eusocial insect colonies, workers have individual preferences for performing particular tasks. Previous research suggests that these preferences might be associated with worker reproductive potential; however, different studies have yielded inconsistent results. This study constitutes the first comparison of foraging preferences between genetically similar normal and rebel honeybee workers, which present different reproductive potential. We found that rebels, which have a higher reproductive potential than normal workers, displayed a delayed onset of foraging and a stronger tendency to collect nectar compared with normal workers. These results support the hypothesis that workers with high reproductive potential invest more in their own egg laying and avoid risky tasks such as foraging. In contrast, the results do not support the hypothesis that reproductive workers initiate foraging earlier in life than normal workers and specialize in pollen foraging.</jats:p

    Cocoon orientation in the nests of red mason bees (Osmia bicornis) is affected by cocoon size and available space

    Proper orientation of cocoons in linearly structured nests can be crucial for the survival of hatching bees. Nevertheless, misoriented cocoons appear in nature in notable proportions. A detailed analysis of sex, space available for cocoon spinning, cocoon size, and nest diameter in the red mason bee (Osmia bicornis) showed that smaller males are more prone to misorientation than larger females. Generally, smaller individuals of both sexes are more often misoriented because smaller larvae disregard the direction of the entrance during cocoon construction. Moreover, cocoons in stems of smaller diameter are less often misoriented than bees in wider nests. Our results suggest that cocoon size and available space are the most important traits affecting cocoon orientation

    Age at which larvae are orphaned determines their development into typical or rebel workers in the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.)

    In the honeybee, diploid larvae fed with royal jelly develop into reproductive queens, whereas larvae fed with royal jelly for three days only and subsequently with honey and pollen develop into facultatively sterile workers. A recent study showed that worker larvae fed in a queenless colony develop into another female polyphenic form: rebel workers. These rebel workers are more queenlike and have greater reproductive potential than normal workers. However, it was unclear whether larvae orphaned at any time during their feeding period can develop into rebels. To answer this question, the anatomical features of newly emerged workers reared in queenless conditions at different ages during the larval period were evaluated. Our results showed that larvae orphaned during the final four or more days of their feeding life develop into rebel workers with more ovarioles in their ovaries, smaller hypopharyngeal glands, and larger mandibular and Dufour’s glands compared with typical workers with low reproductive potential that were reared with a queen or orphaned at the third to last or a later day of feeding life

    Risky robbing is a job for short-lived and infected worker honeybees

    Researchers in many fields would like to understand the determinants of risk-taking. Social insects are an excellent model for examining them since the tasks they perform bear different risks. Some honeybee (Apis mellifera) workers do not forage for nectar or pollen; instead, they take on the extreme risk of robbing honey from other bee nests. In this paper, we show that robbers live shorter lives than foragers under the same cage conditions, and that they are more often and more heavily infected with the intestinal parasite Nosema than foragers are. This finding supports the theoretical prediction that risky tasks should be undertaken by shorter-lived individuals

    Numerous species of solitary bees and wasps build linear nests with only one entrance. Developing insects must orient themselves inside their nest to choose the correct direction in which to emerge. Misorientation and chewing towards the dead end of the nest can result in significant mortality. Most insects position themselves towards the nest entrance during cocoon construction; however, some individuals are misoriented. We tested whether imagines can examine and possibly correct their orientation after emerging from their cocoons. Males were usually able to correct their misoriented position based on the shape of the cell wall and emerged through the correct entrance, whereas most females pursued the direction that they faced in their cocoons. We suggest that there can be more than one time point during development when bees can control their position in relation to the nest entrance and that the importance of these time points varies between sexes

    Honeybee worker larvae perceive queen pheromones in their food

    Honeybee workers develop from fertilised eggs, but those reared in a queenless colony develop into "rebel" workers, which are more queen-like than typical workers. Rebels develop after an old queen leaves with a swarm and before a new queen hatches. We hypothesised that larval food lacking queen mandibular pheromones trigger the rebel phenotype. Larvae reared under queenright or queenless conditions were additionally fed with water or a drop of macerated queen mandibular glands. After following development of the bees and subjecting them to dissection, we found that those reared with a queen or fed the macerated glands under queenless conditions developed into typical workers. Only those workers reared without a queen and without macerated glands added to their food developed into rebels; these rebels had more ovarioles, smaller hypopharyngeal glands, and larger mandibular and Dufour's glands than did typical workers. This is the first evidence that larval perception of the presence or absence of queen pheromones causes an alternative development strategy

    A recent study showed that worker larvae fed in a queenless colony develop into another female polyphenic form - rebel workers. The rebel workers are more queen-like than normal workers because they have higher reproductive potential revealed by more ovarioles in their ovaries. However, it was unclear whether eggs laid by rebel workers avoided worker policing. Worker-laid eggs are normally eaten by other workers in a queenright colony. The aim of this study was to compare the survival of three classes of eggs, namely, those laid by normal workers, rebel workers, and the queen. All eggs were tested in queenright colonies. We expected that rebel workers would avoid policing by laying more queen-like eggs. Contrary to our expectations, eggs laid by rebel workers were eaten by other workers, as were eggs laid by normal workers, and only a few worker-laid eggs (both normal and rebel) survived for more than 3 h. Therefore, in a queenright colony, eggs laid by rebel workers do not avoid policing
