Near-Infrared Photometric Variability of Stars Toward the Chamaeleon I Molecular Cloud
We present the results of a J, H, and K_s photometric monitoring campaign of
a 0.72 x 6 sq deg. area centered on the Chamaeleon I star forming region. Data
were obtained on 15 separate nights over a 4 month time interval using the
2MASS South telescope. Out of a total of 34,539 sources brighter than the
photometric completeness limits (J=16.0, H=15.2, K_s=14.8), 95 exhibit
near-infrared variability in one or more bands. The variables can be grouped
into a population of bright, red objects that are associated with the
Chamaeleon I association, and a population of faint, blue variables that are
dispersed over the full 6 deg of the survey and are likely field stars or older
pre-main-sequence stars unrelated to the present-day Chamaeleon I molecular
cloud. Ten new candidate members of Chamaeleon I, including 8 brown dwarf
candidates, have been identified based on variability and/or near-infrared
excess emission in the J-H vs. H-K_s color-color-diagram. We also provide a
compendium of astrometry and J, H, and K_s photometry for previously identified
members and candidate members of Chamaeleon I.Comment: To appear in AJ; see

Self-limited self-assembly of chiral filaments
The assembly of filamentous bundles with controlled diameters is common in
biological systems and desirable for the development of nanomaterials. We
discuss dynamical simulations and free energy calculations on patchy spheres
with chiral pair interactions that spontaneously assemble into filamentous
bundles. The chirality frustrates long-range crystal order by introducing twist
between interacting subunits. For some ranges of system parameters this
constraint leads to bundles with a finite diameter as the equilibrium state,
and in other cases frustration is relieved by the formation of defects. While
some self-limited structures can be modeled as twisted filaments arranged with
local hexagonal symmetry, other structures are surprising in their complexity.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Eastern Beringia and beyond: Late Wisconsinan and Holocene landscape dynamics along the Yukon Coastal Plain, Canada
Terrestrial permafrost archives along the Yukon Coastal Plain (northwest Canada) have recorded landscape
development and environmental change since the Late Wisconsinan at the interface of unglaciated Beringia
(i.e. Komakuk Beach) and the northwestern limit of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (i.e. Herschel Island). The objective of this paper is to compare the late glacial and Holocene landscape development on both sides of the former ice margin based on permafrost sequences and ground ice. Analyses at these sites involved a multi-proxy approach including: sedimentology, cryostratigraphy, palaeoecology of ostracods, stable water isotopes in ground ice, hydrochemistry, and AMS radiocarbon and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) dating. AMS and IRSL age determinations yielded full glacial ages at Komakuk Beach that is the northeastern limit of ice-free Beringia. Herschel Island to the east marks the Late Wisconsinan limit of the northwest Laurentide Ice Sheet and is composed of ice-thrust sediments containing plant detritus as young as 16.2 cal ka BP that might provide a maximum age on ice arrival. Late Wisconsinan ice wedges with sediment-rich fillings on Herschel Island are depleted in heavy oxygen isotopes (mean δ18O of −29.1‰); this, together with low dexcess values, indicates colder-than-modern winter temperatures and probably reduced snow depths.
Grain-size distribution and fossil ostracod assemblages indicate that deglaciation of the Herschel Island icethrust moraine was accompanied by alluvial, proluvial, and eolian sedimentation on the adjacent unglaciated
Yukon Coastal Plain until ~11 cal ka BP during a period of low glacio-eustatic sea level. The late glacial–Holocene transition was marked by higher-than-modern summer temperatures leading to permafrost degradation
that began no later than 11.2 cal ka BP and caused a regional thaw unconformity. Cryostructures and ice wedges were truncated while organic matter was incorporated and soluble ions were leached in the thaw zone. Thermokarst activity led to the formation of ice-wedge casts and deposition of thermokarst lake sediments. These were subsequently covered by rapidly accumulating peat during the early Holocene Thermal Maximum. A rising permafrost table, reduced peat accumulation, and extensive ice-wedge growth resulted from climate cooling starting in the middle Holocene until the late 20th century. The reconstruction of palaeolandscape dynamics on the Yukon Coastal Plain and the eastern Beringian edge contributes to unraveling the linkages between ice sheet, ocean, and permafrost that have existed since the Late Wisconsinan

Validation of High Aspect Ratio Cooling in a 89 kN (20,000 lb(sub f)) Thrust Combustion Chamber
In order to validate the benefits of high aspect ratio cooling channels in a large scale rocket combustion chamber, a high pressure, 89 kN (20,000 lbf) thrust, contoured combustion chamber was tested in the NASA Lewis Research Center Rocket Engine Test Facility. The combustion chamber was tested at chamber pressures from 5.5 to 11.0 MPa (800-1600 psia). The propellants were gaseous hydrogen and liquid oxygen at a nominal mixture ratio of six, and liquid hydrogen was used as the coolant. The combustion chamber was extensively instrumented with 30 backside skin thermocouples, 9 coolant channel rib thermocouples, and 10 coolant channel pressure taps. A total of 29 thermal cycles, each with one second of steady state combustion, were completed on the chamber. For 25 thermal cycles, the coolant mass flow rate was equal to the fuel mass flow rate. During the remaining four thermal cycles, the coolant mass flow rate was progressively reduced by 5, 6, 11, and 20 percent. Computer analysis agreed with coolant channel rib thermocouples within an average of 9 percent and with coolant channel pressure drops within an average of 20 percent. Hot-gas-side wall temperatures of the chamber showed up to 25 percent reduction, in the throat region, over that of a conventionally cooled combustion chamber. Reducing coolant mass flow yielded a reduction of up to 27 percent of the coolant pressure drop from that of a full flow case, while still maintaining up to a 13 percent reduction in a hot-gas-side wall temperature from that of a conventionally cooled combustion chamber
Evolutionary models of cold and low-mass planets: Cooling curves, magnitudes, and detectability
Future instruments like NIRCam and MIRI on JWST or METIS at the ELT will be
able to image exoplanets that are too faint for current direct imaging
instruments. Evolutionary models predicting the planetary intrinsic luminosity
as a function of time have traditionally concentrated on gas-dominated giant
planets. We extend these cooling curves to Saturnian and Neptunian planets. We
simulate the cooling of isolated core-dominated and gas giant planets with
masses of 5 Earthmasses to 2 Jupitermasses. The luminosity includes the
contribution from the cooling and contraction of the core and of the H/He
envelope, as well as radiogenic decay. For the atmosphere we use grey,
AMES-Cond, petitCODE, and HELIOS models. We consider solar and non-solar
metallicities as well as cloud-free and cloudy atmospheres. The most important
initial conditions, namely the core-to-envelope ratio and the initial
luminosity are taken from planet formation simulations based on the core
accretion paradigm. We first compare our cooling curves for Uranus, Neptune,
Jupiter, Saturn, GJ 436b, and a 5 Earthmass-planet with a 1% H/He envelope with
other evolutionary models. We then present the temporal evolution of planets
with masses between 5 Earthmasses and 2 Jupitermasses in terms of their
luminosity, effective temperature, radius, and entropy. We discuss the impact
of different post formation entropies. For the different atmosphere types and
initial conditions magnitudes in various filter bands between 0.9 and 30
micrometer wavelength are provided. Using black body fluxes and non-grey
spectra, we estimate the detectability of such planets with JWST. It is found
that a 20 (100) Earthmass-planet can be detected with JWST in the background
limit up to an age of about 10 (100) Myr with NIRCam and MIRI, respectively.Comment: Language corrected version and improved arrangements of figures,
