Catena: Collaboration, Cohesion and Continuity in Design Thinking and Making
In the interests of enhanced collaborative methods of design thinking, design communication,
representation and rapid ideation, this article examines how a series of related activities and events,
‘catenated’ together, or forming a ‘catena’1 of design thinking, could create a clearer, more meaningful
and more efficient portfolio of work for a beginning design studio. Drawing inspiration upon the
operative verbs found in the work of sculptor Richard Serra,2 and using the artefacts from such activities
to create generative design products and iterations across a semester schedule, this paper chronicles a
series of active in-class collaborations over the course of a semester that allowed a cohort of students
to connect a series of design projects together, rather than experience a series of unconnected learning
objectives as was typical. References to learning theories including Jerome Bruner’s spiral curriculum
and David Kolb’s theory of experiential learning3 informed the inquiry. Student feedback and reflection
informed the areas of success and areas of improvement
CCS from industrial sources
The literature concerning the application of CCS to industry is reviewed. Costs are presented for different sectors including ``high purity'' (processes which inherently produce a high concentration of CO2), cement, iron and steel, refinery and biomass. The application of CCS to industry is a field which has had much less attention than its application to the electricity production sector. Costs range from less than 2011 100/tCO 2 . In the words of a synthesis report from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) ``This area has so far not been the focus of discussions and therefore much attention needs to be paid to the application of CCS to industrial sources if the full potential of CCS is to be unlocked''
Symmetric sequence processing in a recurrent neural network model with a synchronous dynamics
The synchronous dynamics and the stationary states of a recurrent attractor
neural network model with competing synapses between symmetric sequence
processing and Hebbian pattern reconstruction is studied in this work allowing
for the presence of a self-interaction for each unit. Phase diagrams of
stationary states are obtained exhibiting phases of retrieval, symmetric and
period-two cyclic states as well as correlated and frozen-in states, in the
absence of noise. The frozen-in states are destabilised by synaptic noise and
well separated regions of correlated and cyclic states are obtained. Excitatory
or inhibitory self-interactions yield enlarged phases of fixed-point or cyclic

Instability of frozen-in states in synchronous Hebbian neural networks
The full dynamics of a synchronous recurrent neural network model with Ising
binary units and a Hebbian learning rule with a finite self-interaction is
studied in order to determine the stability to synaptic and stochastic noise of
frozen-in states that appear in the absence of both kinds of noise. Both, the
numerical simulation procedure of Eissfeller and Opper and a new alternative
procedure that allows to follow the dynamics over larger time scales have been
used in this work. It is shown that synaptic noise destabilizes the frozen-in
states and yields either retrieval or paramagnetic states for not too large
stochastic noise. The indications are that the same results may follow in the

Are there approximate relations among transverse momentum dependent distribution functions?
Certain exact relations among transverse momentum dependent parton
distribution functions due to QCD equations of motion turn into approximate
ones upon the neglect of pure twist-3 terms. On the basis of available data
from HERMES we test the practical usefulness of one such
``Wandzura-Wilczek-type approximation'', namely of that connecting
h_{1L}^{\perp(1)a}(x) to h_L^a(x), and discuss how it can be further tested by
future CLAS and COMPASS data.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Field-dependent heat transport in the Kondo insulator SmB6 : phonons scattered by magnetic impurities
The thermal conductivity of the Kondo insulator SmB was measured
at low temperature, down to 70 mK, in magnetic fields up to 15 T, on single
crystals grown using both the floating-zone and the flux methods. The residual
linear term at is found to be zero in all samples, for
all magnetic fields, in agreement with previous studies. There is therefore no
clear evidence of fermionic heat carriers. In contrast to some prior data, we
observe a large enhancement of with increasing field. The effect of
field is anisotropic, depending on the relative orientation of field and heat
current (parallel or perpendicular), and with respect to the cubic crystal
structure. We interpret our data in terms of heat transport predominantly by
phonons, which are scattered by magnetic impurities.Comment: publish versio
Psychosocial correlates of eating behavior in children and adolescents: a review
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Understanding the correlates of dietary intake is necessary in order to effectively promote healthy dietary behavior among children and adolescents. A literature review was conducted on the correlates of the following categories of dietary intake in children and adolescents: Fruit, Juice and Vegetable Consumption, Fat in Diet, Total Energy Intake, Sugar Snacking, Sweetened Beverage Consumption, Dietary Fiber, Other Healthy Dietary Consumption, and Other Less Healthy Dietary Consumption in children and adolescents.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cross-sectional and prospective studies were identified from PubMed, PsycINFO and PsycArticles by using a combination of search terms. Quantitative research examining determinants of dietary intake among children and adolescents aged 3–18 years were included. The selection and review process yielded information on country, study design, population, instrument used for measuring intake, and quality of research study.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Seventy-seven articles were included. Many potential correlates have been studied among children and adolescents. However, for many hypothesized correlates substantial evidence is lacking due to a dearth of research. The correlates best supported by the literature are: perceived modeling, dietary intentions, norms, liking and preferences. Perceived modeling and dietary intentions have the most consistent and positive associations with eating behavior. Norms, liking, and preferences were also consistently and positively related to eating behavior in children and adolescents. Availability, knowledge, outcome expectations, self-efficacy and social support did not show consistent relationships across dietary outcomes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This review examined the correlates of various dietary intake; Fruit, Juice and Vegetable Consumption, Fat in Diet, Total Energy Intake, Sugar Snacking, Sweetened Beverage Consumption, Dietary Fiber, Other Healthy Dietary Consumption, and Other Less Healthy Dietary Consumption in cross-sectional and prospective studies for children and adolescents. The correlates most consistently supported by evidence were perceived modeling, dietary intentions, norms, liking and preferences. More prospective studies on the psychosocial determinants of eating behavior using broader theoretical perspectives should be examined in future research.</p
Fisher Waves and Front Roughening in a Two-Species Invasion Model with Preemptive Competition
We study front propagation when an invading species competes with a resident;
we assume nearest-neighbor preemptive competition for resources in an
individual-based, two-dimensional lattice model. The asymptotic front velocity
exhibits power-law dependence on the difference between the two species' clonal
propagation rates (key ecological parameters). The mean-field approximation
behaves similarly, but the power law's exponent slightly differs from the
individual-based model's result. We also study roughening of the front, using
the framework of non-equilibrium interface growth. Our analysis indicates that
initially flat, linear invading fronts exhibit Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ)
roughening in one transverse dimension. Further, this finding implies, and is
also confirmed by simulations, that the temporal correction to the asymptotic

Electrical and mechanical properties of Bi-2223/Ag tapes made by TIRT technique
Multi-core Bi-2223/Ag tapes with various number of filaments (21–162), different filament architecture and their changing orientation to the tape plane have been made by the tape-in-rectangular tube (TIRT) process. The transport current properties of TIRT tape samples with “parallel” and “perpendicular” filaments have been measured. The transversal Ic distribution obtained by spatially resolved transport measurements (“magnetic knife”) measurement illustrates that filament quality of TIRT tapes is better at the tape edges as in its centre. The Ic degradation due to bending shows a different behaviour for parallel and perpendicular filaments which is attributed to the difference in filament density and crack propagation
