Oligopoly Deregulation and the Taxation of Commodities
We examine the interplay between market structure and the form that commodity taxation should take in a world in which firms produce differentiated products and so are able to exert some degree of market power. Our analysis takes explicit account of two important recent developments that carry significant implications for market structure and so for the appropriate design and effectiveness of commodity taxation: market deregulation and technological change. In the presence of price discrimination, we find that tax policy loses much of its effectiveness at serving as a substitute for direct regulation. Moreover, in cases where taxes can influence market structure, subsides rather than taxes may be required to achieve optimum market structure.
Oligopoly Deregulation in General Equilibrium: A Tax Neutralization Result
We examine the interplay between market structure and the form that commodity taxation should take in a general equilibrium model in which firms produce differentiated products and so are able to exert market power. Our analysis takes account of two important recent developments that affect market structure and so the appropriate design and effectiveness of commodity taxation: market deregulation and technological change. When market deregulation facilitates price discrimination, we find that tax policy is ineffective as a means to influence market structure. We further show that when tax rates are set optimally government is able to neutralize the potentially detrimental welfare impact of restrictive entry conditions in the differentiated product sector. Finally, we present conditions under which price discrimination is welfare improving.

Team 3: Exploring the relationship of systems research to systems literacy
In this paper, the Systems Research Team (SRT) details the activities and outcomes of the 2016 IFSR Conversation in Linz, Austria. The 2016 SRT includes: Mary Edson (team leader), Pam Buckle Henning, Tim Ferris, Andreas Hieronymi, Ray Ison, Gary Metcalf, George Mobus, Nam Nguyen, David Rousseau, and Shankar Sankaran, with guest team member, Peter Tuddenham, anchoring the endeavor in Systems Literacy. While the 2014 SRT’s focus was answering the question, “What distinguishes Systems Research from other types of research?” an internal focus intended to provide grounding for researchers new to the Systems Sciences, the 2016 SRT’s focus is on reaching out to a broader community in order to provide a foundation for Systems Literacy. The team’s Conversation revolved around the question, “How can Systems Research be in service to Systems Literacy?” The team’s discussions were directed into two essential aspects, separate and integrated, of this question. First, Systems Research serves Systems Literacy by providing a credible foundation for the principles and practices of Systems Science and Systems Thinking in both systematic and systemic modes. Second, Systems Research provides a neutral frame for development of ethical applications of those principles and practices.
The SRT recognizes the exigency in providing foundational principles that can be effectively adopted and disseminated through Systems Literacy. The team’s narrative begins with an understanding the urgency for application of Systems Sciences and Systems Thinking to critical issues. Systems research, as with other types of research, is typically a slow generation of results; however, the body of knowledge gained through this process can be confidently used to address complexity in timely ways. The criticality of the need for salient approaches to complexity is shown in a graphic representation of some possible trajectories of applying or not applying these Systems principles in practice. The choice of how we respond to these issues relates to a process model that can be applied. Through understanding the relationship of the process model to the trajectory, the team directed its focus to developing a MindMap (Eppler, 2006) of eight essential aspects or features of how Systems Research can support Systems Literacy. These include: Systems Science knowledge base, roles and personas, maturity models, role profile, ontology/vocabulary, perspective/framing choice, frameworks, and political ecology. Each of these eight has its own process of unpacking, which was demonstrated to the Conversation participants by delving more deeply into the aspect of knowledge base. The eight relate to unpacking the Systems landscape in a coherent but loosely coupled investment portfolio (economic, social, and relational) for building systemic sensibility in such a way as to be dis/aggregated for different audiences. The week’s work culminated in a plan for “Looking Ahead,” which outlines the intentions of the SRT to continue its activities in support of Systems Literacy in the upcoming months. An example of this continued work is a workshop, “Toward Systems Literacy, the Role of Systems Research,” that was conducted at the 60th Meeting of the International Society for the Systems Sciences in Boulder, July 25, 2016
Does Physical Activity Moderate The Association Between Shorter Leukocyte Telomere Length and Incident Coronary Heart Disease? Data From 54,180 UK Biobank Participants
Telomere shortening is a biological aging hallmark. The effect of short telomere length may be targeted by increased physical activity to reduce the risk of multiple aging-related diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD). The objective was to assess the moderation effect of accelerometer-based physical activity (aPA) on the association between shorter leukocyte telomere length (LTL) relatively in the population sample and incident CHD. Data were from the UK Biobank participants with well-calibrated accelerometer data for at least 6.5 days (n = 54,180). Relative mean LTL at baseline (5–6 years prior to aPA assessment) was measured in T/S ratio, using a multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology, by comparing the amount of the telomere amplification product (T) to that of a single-copy gene (S). aPA measures included total number of events (at least 10-s continued physical activity \u3e 32 milligravities [mg]), total volume, mean duration, mean intensity, and peak intensity of all events. LTL, aPA measures, and their interactions were associated with incident CHD (mean follow-up 6.8 years) using Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for covariates. Longer LTL (relative to the sample distribution) was associated with reduced incidence of CHD (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 0.94 per standard deviation [SD] increase in LTL, [95% CI, 0.90 to 0.99], P = .010). Incidence of CHD was reduced by higher total volume of aPA (aHR = 0.82 per SD increase in LTL, [95% CI, 0.71 to 0.95], P = .010) but increased by higher total number of events (aHR = 1.11 per SD increase in LTL, [95% CI, 1.02 to 1.21], P = .020) after controlling for other aPA measures and covariates. However, none of the interactions between LTL and aPA measures was statistically significant (P = .171)

Microbial effects on the development of forensically important blow fly species
Colonisation times and development rates of specific blow fly species are used to estimate the minimum Post Mortem Interval (mPMI). The presence or absence of bacteria on a corpse can potentially affect the development and survival of blow fly larvae. Therefore an understanding of microbial-insect interactions is important for improving the interpretation of mPMI estimations. In this study, the effect of two bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) on the growth rate and survival of three forensically important blow fly species (Lucilia sericata, Calliphora vicina and Calliphora vomitoria) was investigated. Sterile larvae were raised in a controlled environment (16:8 h day: night light cycle, 23:21 °C day: night temperature cycle and a constant 35% relative humidity) on four artificial diets prepared with 100 μl of 105 CFU bacterial solutions as follows: (1) E. coli, (2) S. aureus, (3) a 50:50 E. coli:S. aureus mix and (4) a sterile bacteria-free control diet. Daily measurements (length, width and weight) were taken from first instar larvae through to the emergence of adult flies. Survival rates were also determined at pupation and adult emergence. Results indicate that bacteria were not essential for the development of any of the blow fly species. However, larval growth rates were affected by bacterial diet, with effects differing between blow fly species. Peak larval weights also varied according to species-diet combination; C. vomitoria had the largest weight on E. coli and mixed diets, C. vicina had the largest weight on S. aureus diets, and treatment had no significant effect on the peak larval weight of L. sericata. These results indicate the potential for the bacteria that larvae are exposed to during development on a corpse to alter both developmental rates and larval weight in some blow fly species.Daphne Jackson Trus
Design and manufacture of a proof-of-concept resorption heat pump using ammonia-salt chemisorption reactions
Using the Large Temperature Jump (LTJ) experimental technique, alongside a review of the literature, sodium bromide (NaBr) and manganese chloride (MnCl2) have been identified as a suitable working pair with ammonia refrigerant for a proof-of-concept resorption heat pump system. LTJ tests using a tube-side and shell-side unit cell reactor (sorption heat exchanger), show that the experimentally obtained equilibrium lines for adsorption and desorption of sodium bromide are: ΔHADS = 30,102.5 J/mol; ΔSADS = 207.7 J/(mol·K); ΔHDES = 30,216.4 J/mol; and ΔSDES = 206.8 J/(mol·K). Using a semi-empirical model, the NaBr composite salt (salt impregnated in expanded natural graphite (ENG)) has been characterised for use as a low temperature salt in a resorption heat pump, with manganese chloride as the high-temperature salt. The model constants, A and n, for adsorption are 1 and 3, and for desorption are 5 and 4 respectively for NaBr. Manganese chloride data has been previously reported (Hinmers et al., 2022). With an appreciation of the reaction dynamics and behaviour of the NaBr and MnCl2 composite salts, a proof-of-concept resorption system has been designed and manufactured. The reactor design, alongside the overall experimental rig design (including data acquisition system) is reported. Initial filling and flushing tests show the success of the data acquisition and control system, and thus the overall suitability of the proof of-concept system for investigations into the coupled nature of ammonia salt reactions for a resorption heat pump application
Changes in objectively measured activity behavior among women undergoing breast cancer treatment: Longitudinal cohort study
Purpose: Activity behaviors of breast cancer survivors (BCSs) during treatment are unlikely to be at levels sufficient enough to gain health benefits. Previous activity research among BCSs has been mainly posttreatment and generally cross-sectional. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and changes in objectively measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light physical activity (LPA), and sedentary behavior (SED) among BCSs undergoing adjuvant/palliative therapy.Methods: Participants completed baseline surveys and wore accelerometers to measure activity during waking hours during treatment and again 6 months later. Hierarchal linear modeling (HLM) was used to determine changes.Results: In total, 77 BCSs participated. Ninety-one percent provided physical activity (PA) data for 3 or more valid days at baseline (T1) and 72% at 6 months (T2); 29% met PA guidelines at T1 and 41% at T2. Daily LPA and SED did not change from T1 to T2 (133 vs 138 minutes; 595 vs 597 minutes). Controlling for body mass index at the intercept, HLM revealed that MVPA significantly increased from T1 to T2 (+5.62; P = .015).Conclusion: An increase in objectively measured total daily MVPA over 6 months was found, at which time, fewer BCSs were currently receiving chemo- or radiotherapy and may theoretically be feeling better. However, fewer T2 measures may bias and artificially inflate the results. Although total MVPA minutes increased at T2, less than half BCSs were meeting guidelines and had high amounts of LPA/SED during treatment, with insignificant change over time (71% at T1; 59% at T2). Practitioner intervention may help reduce SED while increasing LPA and MVPA behavior among those currently undergoing treatment
