Studying the -mass in-medium in reactions
Simulations based on a coupled-channel transport model have been performed to
analyze the feasibility to study the in-medium mass exploiting the
process for C, Ca and Nb nuclei. The distortions due
to final-state interactions of the and background contributions from
the reaction are found to be small in the mass range
of interest ( GeV). Furthermore, the effect of the
detector resolution on the -mass determination is discussed
Near-threshold Production in Heavy-ion Collisions
Within a hadronic transport model we study in detail contributions to kaon
yields and momentum spectra from various baryon (resonance)-baryon (resonance)
and interactions in heavy-ion collisions at beam energies near the
free-space kaon production threshold. It is found that the finite lifetime of
baryon resonances affects significantly the shape of kaon spectra, and the high
energy parts of the kaon spectra are dominated by kaons from processes. resonances are found to contribute
about 10\% to the kaon yield. Effects of boosting the Fermi momentum
distributions of the two colliding nuclei into their center of mass frame,
centrality of the reaction as well as the nuclear equation of state on kaon
yields and spectra are also discussed. Model calculations on ,
and spectra for the reaction of Au+Au at GeV are
compared with the experimental data from the KaoS collaboration.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures available upon request. TAMU preprint #940403
Exclusive measurement of coherent eta photoproduction from the deuteron
Coherent photoproduction of eta mesons from the deuteron has been measured
from threshold up to incident photon energies of 750 MeV using the photon
spectrometer TAPS at the tagged photon facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI.
For the first time, differential coherent cross sections have been deduced from
the coincident detection of the eta meson and the recoil deuteron. A missing
energy analysis was used for the suppression of background events so that a
very clean identification of coherent eta-photoproduction was achieved. The
resulting cross sections agree with previous experimental results except for
angles around 90 deg in the photon-deuteron cm-system where they are smaller.
They are compared to various model calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Pluto: A Monte Carlo Simulation Tool for Hadronic Physics
Pluto is a Monte-Carlo event generator designed for hadronic interactions
from Pion production threshold to intermediate energies of a few GeV per
nucleon, as well as for studies of heavy ion reactions. This report gives an
overview of the design of the package, the included models and the user
interface.Comment: XI International Workshop on Advanced Computing and Analysis

Theory and Phenomenology of Vector Mesons in Medium
Electromagnetic probes promise to be direct messengers of (spectral
properties of) hot and dense matter formed in heavy-ion collisions, even at
soft momentum transfers essential for characterizing possible phase
transitions. We examine how far we have progressed toward this goal by
highlighting recent developments, and trying to establish connections between
lattice QCD, effective hadronic models and phenomenology of dilepton
production.Comment: 8 pages latex incl. 12 ps/eps files; invited plenary talk at Quark

Neutral Pions and Eta Mesons as Probes of the Hadronic Fireball in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions around 1A GeV
Chemical and thermal freeze-out of the hadronic fireball formed in symmetric
collisions of light, intermediate-mass, and heavy nuclei at beam energies
between 0.8A GeV and 2.0A GeV are discussed in terms of an equilibrated,
isospin-symmetric ideal hadron gas with grand-canonical baryon-number
conservation. For each collision system the baryochemical potential mu_B and
the chemical freeze-out temperature T_c are deduced from the inclusive neutral
pion and eta yields which are augmented by interpolated data on deuteron
production. With increasing beam energy mu_B drops from 800 MeV to 650 MeV,
while T_c rises from 55 MeV to 90 MeV. For given beam energy mu_B grows with
system size, whereas T_c remains constant. The centrality dependence of the
freeze-out parameters is weak as exemplified by the system Au+Au at 0.8A GeV.
For the highest beam energies the fraction of nucleons excited to resonance
states reaches freeze-out values of nearly 15 %, suggesting resonance densities
close to normal nuclear density at maximum compression. In contrast to the
particle yields, which convey the status at chemical freeze-out, the shapes of
the related transverse-mass spectra do reflect thermal freeze-out. The observed
thermal freeze-out temperatures T_th are equal to or slightly lower than T_c,
indicative of nearly simultaneous chemical and thermal freeze-out.Comment: 42 pages, 12 figure
Correlation of aligned angular momentum with scattering angle and energy loss in deeply inelastic collisions
..gamma..-ray in-plane to out-of-plane anisotropy and multiplicity are determined for the /sup 100/Mo + /sup 165/Ho reaction at E/sub cm/ = 450 MeV. The measurements are made as functions of Q-value and theta/sub cm/ for the coincident quasi or deeply inelastically scattered ions. Strong correlations of the aligned angular momentum with both energy loss and scattering angle are observed
Photoproduction of eta-mesic 3He
The photoproduction of eta-mesic 3He has been investigated using the TAPS
calorimeter at the Mainz Microtron accelerator facility MAMI. The total
inclusive cross section for the reaction gamma+3He->eta+X has been measured for
photon energies from threshold to 820 MeV. The total and angular differential
coherent eta cross sections have been extracted up to energies of 745 MeV. A
resonance-like structure just above the eta production threshold with an
isotropic angular distribution suggests the existence of a resonant quasi-bound
state. This is supported by studies of a competing decay channel of such a
quasi-bound eta-mesic nucleus into pi^0+p+X. A binding energy of (-4.4+-4.2)
MeV and a width of (25.6+-6.1) MeV is deduced for the quasi-bound eta-mesic
state in 3He.Comment: v1: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL; v2: minor revisions and
