The horizontal and vertical semi-diameters of the Sun observed at the Cape of Good Hope (1834 - 1887) and Paris (1837 - 1906): A report on work in progress
Cape and Paris meridian observations of the solar limbs which permit an estimate to be made of the solar semi-diameter were surveyed, sampled, and compared with Greenwich and U.S. Naval Observatory observations. Significant systematic errors were found in the Paris work and have been correlated with changes of instruments and observers. Results from the Cape series indicate that work should continue on the compilation of data from Cape observations of the Sun
Patterning molecular scale paramagnets at Au Surface: A root to Magneto-Molecular-Electronics
Few examples of the exploitation of molecular magnetic properties in
molecular electronics are known to date. Here we propose the realization of
Self assembled monolayers (SAM) of a particular stable organic radical. This
radical is meant to be used as a standard molecule on which to prove the
validity of a single spin reading procedure known as ESR-STM. We also discuss a
range of possible applications, further than ESR-STM, of magnetic monolayers of
simple purely organic magnetic molecule.Comment: This preprint is currently partially under revisio
Search for Gamma-Ray Transients using the SMM Spectrometer
Observations for transient radiation made by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer on the SMM satellite are summarized. Spectra were obtained from 215 solar flares and 177 gamma-ray bursts. No narrow or moderately broadened lines were observed in any of the bursts. The rate of bursts is consistent with a constant over the mission but is weakly correlated with solar activity. No evidence was found for bursts of 511 keV line emission, unaccompanied by a strong continuum, at levels not less than 0.05 gamma/sq cm s for bursts lasting not more than 16 s. No evidence was found for broad features near 1 MeV from Cyg X-1, the Galactic center, or the Crab in 12-d integrations at levels not less than 0.006 gamma/sq cm s. No evidence was found for transient celestial narrow-line emission from 300 keV to 7 MeV on min-to-hrs-long time scales from 1984 to 1989

The MEV project: design and testing of a new high-resolution telescope for Muography of Etna Volcano
The MEV project aims at developing a muon telescope expressly designed for
the muography of Etna Volcano. In particular, one of the active craters in the
summit area of the volcano would be a suitable target for this experiment. A
muon tracking telescope with high imaging resolution was built and tested
during 2017. The telescope is a tracker based on extruded scintillating bars
with WLS fibres and featuring an innovative read-out architecture. It is
composed of three XY planes with a sensitive area of \SI{1}{m^2}; the angular
resolution does not exceeds \SI{0.4}{\milli\steradian} and the total angular
aperture is about \SI{45}{\degree}. A special effort concerned the design
of mechanics and electronics in order to meet the requirements of a detector
capable to work in a hostile environment such as the top of a tall volcano, at
a far distance from any facility. The test phase started in January 2017 and
ended successfully at the end of July 2017. An extinct volcanic crater (the
Monti Rossi, in the village of Nicolosi, about 15km from Catania) is the target
of the measurement. The detector acquired data for about 120 days and the
preliminary results are reported in this work
Limits on a Variable Source of 511 keV Annihilation Radiation near the Galactic Center
The Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite (SMM) has observed a strong Galactic source of 511 keV annihilation radiation from its launch in 1980 to its reentry in 1989. These observations are consistent with an extended source having an intensity of about 0.002 gamma/sq cm/s averaged over the central radian of Galactic longitude. These data are searched for evidence of the variable Galactic center source of 511 keV line radiation which was reported to have reappeared in 1988 by Leventhal et al. The SMM data are consistent with, but do not require, a compact source emitting a time-averaged flux of about 0.0004 gamma/sq cm/s during about 3 month transits in 1987 and 1988; they are inconsistent with a compact source flux in excess of 0.0008 gamma/sq cm/s for each year
Nonlocal properties of entangled two-photon generalized binomial states in two separate cavities
We consider entangled two-photon generalized binomial states of the
electromagnetic field in two separate cavities. The nonlocal properties of this
entangled field state are analyzed by studying the electric field correlations
between the two cavities. A Bell's inequality violation is obtained using an
appropriate dichotomic cavity operator, that is in principle measurable.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
Measurement of the 0.3-8.5 MeV Galactic Gamma-Ray Spectrum from the Galactic Center Direction
The low-energy gamma-ray spectrum from the direction of the Galactic center is determined using data obtained with the SMM Gamma-Ray Spectrometer. It is found that the diffuse gamma-ray spectrum from the Galactic center region can be interpreted in a straightforward way as the sum of five components of a presented equation. The components include a hard power law dominating the continuum at high energies caused principally by cosmic ray electron bremsstrahlung radiation, two narrow lines due to Al-26 decay and positron annihilation, an excess continuum component below 0.511 MeV consistent with the annihilation of positrons by formation of Ps, and a soft power law at low energies which is consistent with an extrapolation upward in energy of known hard X-ray sources in the Galactic center region
