The role of networking in the competitiveness profile of Spanish firms

Two main forces coincide nowadays in the characterisation of productive systems. On the one hand, the internationalisation of markets and economic activities has resulted in an increasing competition worldwide and a new and more global division of labour. On the other, the greater complexity of technology makes innovation a key factor in manufacturing firms’ competitiveness. Cooperative network relationships seem to be important in both processes. This paper aims to explore this aspect in the competitiveness behaviour of four Spanish manufacturing industries: food, chemicals, electronics and vehicles. Data has been obtained from a survey conducted specifically for this purpose at the firm level. Findings from the empirical analysis, based on the application of the Polytomus Logit Universal Model (PLUM), confirm the positive effects of the ability to network on company performance, particularly, intra-firm cooperation, cooperation between competitors and user-producer relationships.La internacionalización de mercados, de actividades económicas y la creciente competencia global son algunos de los factores que caracterizan los sistemas productivos actuales. A ello se suma una intensa complejidad tecnológica que afecta tanto a productos como a procesos productivos, concediéndole a la innovación un papel clave en la competitividad de las empresas manufactureras. En ambos procesos, las relaciones de cooperación empresarial se erigen como forma organizativa de creciente importancia. En este documento se explora la relación entre cooperación y comportamiento competitivo en cuatro industrias manufactureras: alimentación, química, electrónica y automóviles. La información estadística se ha obtenido a partir de una encuesta realizada a nivel microeconómico y diseñada específicamente con este fin en España. Los resultados que se derivan del análisis empírico, basados en la aplicación de un modelo Logit Universal (PLUM), confirman los efectos positivos de las relaciones cooperativas en los resultados empresariales, concretamente las relaciones intra-empresa, la cooperación entre competidores y las relaciones usuario-proveedor.Co-operation, Networking, Innovation, Competitiveness.

Personalismo, Small Schools, and Latino Students\u27 Academic Success

A growing body of research indicates that Latino students continue to struggle academically presenting educators and school leaders with serious concerns about a cultural achievement gap. Guided by the work of Lee & Loeb, (2000); Lee & Freidkin, (2007) and Stevens, (2008) who have examined small personalized learning communities, this paper examines the concept of personalismo as a conduit for establishing a platform that may help narrow the achievement gap within the Latino population in the public school system. Through a series of T-Tests, conducted in two small public schools with varying levels of personalismo, within a Chicago Public School Latino community this study will examine whether the construct of personalismo has a significant effect on the academic achievement of Latino students. Grounded in national research findings conducted across various urban populations about small learning communities, this study proposes that small learning communities promote interpersonal closeness and connectedness between students and educators, particularly for Latino students, that yield improved academic outcomes. The results should help school leaders, teachers and policy makers understand why Latino students’ academic achievement improves when enrolled in small, personalized environments. The findings suggest that training professionals on the benefits of personalismo in large urban schools will help narrow the achievement gap across the nation

El tema que proponemos en este monográfico se enmarca en los desarrollos conceptuales y teóricos que han tenido lugar en las últimas décadas acerca de los procesos de inclusión y exclusión social, ampliando las fronteras y alcances interpretativos de las propuestas elaboradas a lo largo del siglo XX en torno a distintas formas de discriminación social. "Brazo y cerebro" : las dinámicas de inclusión-exclusión en torno a la profesión médica y el anarcosindicalismo español en el primer tercio del Siglo XX

El objeto del presente trabajo es analizar la dinámica que se estableció dentro del anarcosindicalismo español entre los trabajadores manuales y los profesionales médicos que comulgaban con la ideología anarquista. La incorporación de técnicos e intelectuales al movimiento obrero fue una característica generalizada en el mundo occidental pero mientras que las organizaciones socialistas dejaban en manos de los médicos la dirección de todas sus políticas sanitarias, los sindicatos anarquistas no aceptaron estos principios tecnocráticos pues no consideraban al intelectual como el más indicado para tomar decisiones que concernían a toda la colectividad. En este contexto, podemos observar como los profesionales de la medicina desarrollaron distintas estrategias para ser aceptados por los militantes anarcosindicalistas, los cuales, a su vez mostraban distintos niveles de aceptación según las distintas corrientes de pensamiento existentes en el sindicato.The aim of this paper is to analyze the dynamics within Spanish anarcho-syndicalism between manual workers and medical professionals who shared the anarchist ideology. The incorporation of technicians into the labour movement was a common feature in the Western world; however, while socialist organizations left health policies in the hands of physicians, anarchist Contents unions did not accept these technocratic principles, given that they did not consider intellectuals as the best suited to take decisions concerning the whole community. In this context, we can see how medical professionals developed diverse strategies to be accepted by anarcho-syndicalist militants, who in turn showed different levels of acceptance according to the distinct lines of thought within the union

Fonts i protagonistes de la informació en la televisió de proximitat. El cas del Tele Elx

Following the process of regulation of local digital terrestrial television in Spain, some of the academic research has focused on the beleaguered sector of the so-called proximity television. Although some of the studies go back to the eighties, most of the research deals with historicist or legislative issues, not taking into account other aspects such as the content and programming of local broadcasters. This paper presents the case of Tele Elx, a local television channel born in 1987 in Elche, which we regard as a paradigm of the evolution of proximity television. Our objective is to analyze its news sources and the main actors in its newscasts. We have carried out a content analysis of several samples of its prime-time newscast, Tele nit, which has been broadcasted from its launch. The sample includes 35 newscasts, from 1991 to 2015, which allow us to diachronically carry out an analysis of the evolution of news in local television in Spain.Arran de la regulació de la televisió digital terrestre local (TDT-L) a Espanya s'ha reactivat l'atenció investigadora sobre el maltractat sector de la televisió de proximitat. Tot i que els estudis es remunten als anys huitanta, la majoria versen sobre aspectes historicistes o legislatius i menyspreen altres enfocaments sobre l'oferta de programació i continguts d'aquestes televisions. Aquest article presenta el cas de Tele Elx, un canal d'àmbit local nascut el 1987 a Elx i que considerem que és un paradigma de l'evolució de les televisions de proximitat. El propòsit és conèixer-ne les fonts d'informació i els protagonistes de les seues notícies. Per a això s'han realitzat mostres selectives en el seu informatiu capdavanter, Tele nit, que s'emet ininterrompudament des dels seus inicis. La mostra abasta trenta-cinc noticiaris, del 1991 al 2015, que permeten fer una anàlisi diacrònica de la progressió dels informatius locals en televisions de petita escala

Colonial scientific-medical documentary films and the legitimization of an ideal state in post-war Spain

This paper explores the role of film and medical-health practices and discourses in the building and legitimating strategies of Franco's fascist regime in Spain. The analysis of five medical-colonial documentary films produced during the 1940s explores the relationship between mass media communication practices and techno-scientific knowledge production, circulation and management processes. These films portray a non-problematic colonial space where social order is articulated through scientific-medical practices and discourses that match the regime's need to consolidate and legitimize itself while asserting the inclusion-exclusion dynamics involved in the definition of social prototypes through processes of medicalization.O artigo explora o papel de práticas e discursos em saúde e cinema na construção e legitimação das estratégias do regime fascista de Franco na Espanha. A análise de cinco documentários médicos coloniais produzidos na década de 1940 explora a relação entre as práticas de comunicação de massa e os processos de produção, circulação e administração do conhecimento técnico-científico. Tais filmes retratam um espaço colonial não problemático onde a ordem social é articulada por meio de práticas e discursos médico-científicos que atendem à necessidade de consolidar e legitimar o regime, validando a dinâmica de inclusão-exclusão envolvida na representação de protótipos sociais por meio de processos de medicalização

La mentoría como estrategia para la mejora del rendimiento escolar

Estudio de caso.Este estudio de casos tiene como objetivo comprobar las variaciones en el rendimiento escolar de una menor de Educación Primaria tras su intervención de seis meses basada en mentoría, encuadrada en el Plan Progresa. La mentora diseñó el Proyecto de Intervención Individualizada Progresa y organizó las sesiones, que se desarrollaron dos veces por semana en horario extraescolar, y en las que se trabajó en la adquisición de competencias sociales, educativas y personales. La mentora, a su vez, fue tutorizada por un profesional de los Servicios Sociales Comunitarios, que le guió en la labor de asesoramiento familiar y coordinación con familia y escuela. Libertarian movement and self-management of knowledge in the Spain of the first third of the 20th century : «Questions and answers» section (1930-1937) of the journal Estudios

Newspaper Q&A sections reflect and contribute to the social historical context in which they are published, and they may play roles as distinct as becoming a tool to sustain social arrangements or, conversely, being an instrument for social change. In a context of complex relations between experts and non-experts within the libertarian movement in Spain in the first third of the 20th century, the Q&A section («Preguntas y respuestas», 1930-1937) of the anarchist magazine Estudios (1928-1937) constitutes a particularly illustrative example of the multidimensional management of knowledge through the effective redefinition of the participation of quite different groups. In this paper, we analyze the exchange between physician Roberto Remartínez (1895-1977), the section coordinator, and its readers, and identify features of the implementation of the libertarian principles of self-management through communication practices in which experts and non-experts jointly take part
