    On 13 April, Jean-Marie Le Pen, the founder of the Front National, announced that he would no longer be putting himself forward as a candidate for the party in French regional elections to be held later this year. The announcement came amid a much publicised row between Jean-Marie and his daughter, Marine Le Pen, who currently leads the party. Patrick F. Merle writes that while the feud has been developing for some time, the way in which Marine Le Pen chooses to deal with the fallout will have an impact on the party’s future development ahead of the next French presidential election in 2017

    We present an overview of the theory of finite groups, with regard to their application as flavour symmetries in particle physics. In a general part, we discuss useful theorems concerning group structure, conjugacy classes, representations and character tables. In a specialized part, we attempt to give a fairly comprehensive review of finite subgroups of SO(3) and SU(3), in which we apply and illustrate the general theory. Moreover, we also provide a concise description of the symmetric and alternating groups and comment on the relationship between finite subgroups of U(3) and finite subgroups of SU(3). Though in this review we give a detailed description of a wide range of finite groups, the main focus is on the methods which allow the exploration of their different aspects.Comment: 89 pages, 6 figures, some references added, rearrangement of part of the material, section on SU(3) subgroups substantially extended, some minor revisions.     The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) will provide the data to support detailed investigations of the distribution of luminous and non- luminous matter in the Universe: a photometrically and astrometrically calibrated digital imaging survey of pi steradians above about Galactic latitude 30 degrees in five broad optical bands to a depth of g' about 23 magnitudes, and a spectroscopic survey of the approximately one million brightest galaxies and 10^5 brightest quasars found in the photometric object catalog produced by the imaging survey. This paper summarizes the observational parameters and data products of the SDSS, and serves as an introduction to extensive technical on-line documentation.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, AAS Latex.     International audienceRecent developments and achievements of the EUROfusion Code Development for Integrated Modelling project (WPCD), which aim is to provide a validated integrated modelling suite for the simulation and prediction of complete plasma discharges in any tokamak, are presented. WPCD develops generic complex integrated simulations, workflows, for physics applications, using the standardized European Integrated Modelling (EU-IM) framework. Selected physics applications of EU-IM workflows are illustrated in this paper

    Conical Nanoindentation Allows Azimuthally Independent Hardness Determination in Geological and Biogenic Minerals

    The remarkable mechanical performance of biominerals often relies on distinct crystallographic textures, which complicate the determination of the nanohardness from indentations with the standard non-rotational-symmetrical Berkovich punch. Due to the anisotropy of the biomineral to be probed, an azimuthal dependence of the hardness arises. This typically increases the standard deviation of the reported hardness values of biominerals and impedes comparison of hardness values across the literature and, as a result, across species. In this paper, we demonstrate that an azimuthally independent nanohardness determination can be achieved by using a conical indenter. It is also found that conical and Berkovich indentations yield slightly different hardness values because they result in different pile-up behaviors and because of technical limitations on the fabrication of perfectly equivalent geometries. For biogenic crystals, this deviation of hardness values between indenters is much lower than the azimuthal variation in non-rotational-symmetrical Berkovich indentations
