L’autorité narrative dans le roman contemporain : Exploitations et redéfinitions

Le présent article vise à dégager les procédés, dans des textes à la visée narrative explicite, qui problématisent expressément et redéfinissent l’autorité narrative, sans pour autant sacrifier la captatio illusionis, c’est-à-dire l’adhésion du lecteur à la fiction. Les trois textes retenus, à dominante événementielle mais savants – Un an de Jean Echenoz (1997), L’Histoire de Pi de Yann Martel (2002), Lauve le pur de Richard Millet (2000) –, s’inscrivent dans la mouvance du retour au récit ; cette narrativité, revue à la lumière des acquis de la modernité, présente divers degrés et positionnements de l’autorité narrative et attire ainsi l’attention sur les modalités d’adhésion et les enjeux de crédibilité du discours fictionnel. Nous estimons que cette réflexion caractérise précisément tout un pan du roman contemporain.This paper seeks to bring out, in texts of explicitly narrative orientation, the different devices that problematize and redefine narrative authority, without sacrificing the captatio illusionis, that is to say, the reader’s engagement with the fiction. The three texts constituting the focus of our study, Jean Echenoz’s Un an (1997), Yann Martel’s Life of Pi (2002), Richard Millet’s Lauve de pur (2000) are part of the current return to narrative. This narrativity, seen in the light of modernity, presents various degrees of narrative authority and draws attention to the terms of engagement as well as to the question of plausibility at stake in the fictional discourse. Poétique du récit contemporain : négation du genre ou émergence d'un sous-genre?

Depuis 1980, on a pu recenser au Québec la publication de plus de deux cents récits, c'est-à-dire d'ouvrages qui portent de façon explicite l'indication générique « récit » sur leur page couverture. L'article propose de retracer les traits constitutifs de cet ensemble (la poétique du récit contemporain), dont le processus d'autonomisation amorcé dès le milieu des années soixante aboutirait vers les années quatre-vingt à une conscience générique plus nette. Capable de recouvrir autobiographie et fiction, formes brèves et longues, poésie et narrativité, le récit semble marqué par l'hybridité et les préoccupations de la littérature contemporaine. À cela s'ajoute toutefois un parcours historique qui dégage un pacte de lecture et un rapport à la subjectivité faisant du récit un genre, depuis longtemps lié à l'expression de soi et à la quête existentielle. N'ayant jamais constitué un ensemble générique « fort », l'état présent du récit apparaît sans doute provisoire. L'examen mené ici conduit tout de même à le soustraire de la stricte série des fictions narratives.Over 200 récits have been published in Québec since 1980, a récit being defined as any book bearing the generic term "récit" on its title page. The article proposes to identify the specific characteristics of this group (the poetics of the contemporary récit), arguing that the récifs movement towards autonomy began in the mid-sixties and led, some time during the eighties, to a more definite generic awareness. Capable of encompassing autobiography and fiction, short and long forms, poetry and narrativity, the récit seems characterized by hybridity and the concerns of contemporary literature. However, the genre's historical evolution has also created a reading pact and a relation to subjectivity that have ensured its long connection with self-expression and the existential quest. Since the récit has never constituted a "strong" generic group, its present status is probably temporary. However, this analysis does lead to its removal from the category of strict narrative fictions

Les temps du soi. Bénévolat, identité et éthique

À partir d’une recherche empirique dans trois régions, l’articulation entre l’éthique et l’identité est analysée, ainsi que la façon dont l’engagement bénévole travaille l’identité. Des récits d’engagement de bénévoles québécois, oeuvrant dans le secteur scolaire, religieux ou culturel, nous dégageons quatre formes de parcours et de rapport à l’engagement, dans lesquelles nous reconnaissons d’abord quatre dimensions de l’identité, puis quatre postures éthiques. D’une pratique particulière, nous sommes ainsi conduits à une analyse plus générale touchant l’articulation entre identité et éthique dans le Québec contemporain.Based on empirical research in three regions, the interactions between ethics and identity are analysed, as well as the way in which volunteer involvement interacts with identity. From accounts of their involvement by Québec volunteers working in the school, religious and cultural sectors, the authors identify four forms of patterns and relationships with such involvement, in which four dimensions of identity are first recognized, followed by four ethical positionings. Thus, starting from one specific area of activity, we are led into a more general analysis focusing on the interactions between identity and ethics in contemporary Québec

Individual factors associated with baseball pitching performance: scoping review

Background Ball velocity, accuracy and game statistics represent three methods used to measure pitching performance. However, individual determinants of pitching performance are more elusive.Objectives The aims of this study were to classify the performance factors associated with baseball pitchers, to identify the methods used to quantify their abilities through all features of the game and to document relationships between performance factors and indicators.Design Scoping review.Data sources Electronic searches of MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, SportDiscus, PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane and of grey literature were undertaken from inception to January 2019.Eligibility criteria for selecting studies Cross-sectional studies that investigated the relationship between performance indicators and individual performance factors in healthy baseball pitchers were selected.Results Thirty-four cross-sectional studies investigating individual potential factors of pitching performance met the inclusion criteria. The primary performance factors investigated were kinematic, kinetic, timing outcomes, personal characteristics, physical tests and range of motion. Shoulder horizontal adduction (SHA), upper torso forward flexion, maximal shoulder external rotation, upper torso rotation angle, upper torso lateral flexion, lead knee flexion (LKF) and forward trunk tilt (FTT) were identified as key kinematic features associated with increased ball velocity. Shoulder proximal force and peak elbow proximal forces were associated with greater ball velocity. Individual performances in jumping tests and body weight (BW) are also associated with pitching performance.Summary/conclusion Based on studies presenting low and moderate risk of bias, we conclude that BW, age and kinematics, such as FTT, LKF, SHA and lateral trunk tilt, are associated with pitching performance
