    Understanding interface effects in perovskite thin films

    The control of matter properties (transport, magnetic, dielectric,...) using synthesis as thin films is strongly hindered by the lack of reliable theories, able to guide the design of new systems, through the understanding of the interface effects and of the way the substrate constraints are imposed to the material. The present paper analyses the energetic contributions at the interfaces, and proposes a model describing the microscopic mechanisms governing the interactions at an epitaxial interface between a manganite and another transition metal oxide in perovskite structure (as for instance SrTiO3\rm SrTiO_3). The model is checked against experimental results and literature analysis

    A postal survey to identify and describe nurse led clinics in genitourinary medicine services across England

    Background: Nurses in genitourinary medicine (GUM) services are progressively extending their roles to conduct "comprehensive care" nurse led clinics. In such roles the nurse coordinates the first line, comprehensive care of patients presenting with sexual health conditions and issues. Objectives: To identify and describe comprehensive care nurse led clinics in GUM services across England. Methods: A postal questionnaire consisting of 17 closed response questions was sent to 209 GUM services across England. A second questionnaire was sent to non-responders to increase the response rate. Data were single entered and analysed using SPSS. Results: Of the 190 GUM clinic respondents (91% response rate), 44 (23%) reported providing some form of comprehensive care nurse led clinic, 90% of which were initiated since 1995. Key results show staff development featured as the main reason for initiating such services and there was general consistency in the aspects of care undertaken by these nurses. There was evidence of guideline development specific to nurse led care and some patient group direction use for supplying medication. The level of support from medical staff while nurse led clinics were being conducted varied between services. Few services have conducted any audit or research to monitor/evaluate nurse led care. There was little consistency in the clinical experience and educational prerequisites to undertake comprehensive care nurse led clinics. Continuing professional development opportunities also varied between services. Conclusions: The steady growth of comprehensive care nurse led clinics indicates that the skills of GUM nurses are being recognised. Nurses working in advanced practice roles now require courses and study days reflecting these changes in practice. Locally agreed practice guidelines can define nursing practice boundaries and ensure accountability, as will the development of patient group directions to supply medication. Monitoring and evaluation of nurse led clinics also require attention

    Hysteresis in the electronic transport of V2O3 thin films: non-exponential kinetics and range scale of phase coexistence

    The thermal hysteresis of the electronic transport properties were studied for V2O3 thin films. The temporal evolution of the resistance shows the out-of-equilibrium nature of this hysteresis with a very slow relaxation. Partial cycles reveal not only a behavior consistent with phase coexistence, but also the presence of spinodal temperatures which are largely separated. The temperature spreading of phase coexistence is consistent with the bulk phase diagram in the pressure-temperature plane, confirming that the film is effectively under an effective pressure induced by the substrate.Comment: Accepted for publication in Europhysics Letter

    A tale of three cities: persisting high HIV prevalence, risk behaviour and undiagnosed infection in community samples of men who have sex with men

    Objectives: To examine the geographical variations in HIV prevalence (diagnosed and undiagnosed), use of sexual health services, sexually transmitted infections and sexual behaviour in a community sample of men who have sex with men in three cities in England, specifically London, Brighton and Manchester.Methods: Cross-sectional surveys of men visiting gay community venues in three large cities in England. Men self-completed a questionnaire and provided an anonymous oral fluid sample for HIV antibody testing.Results: HIV prevalence ranged from 8.6% to 13.7% in the three cities. Over one-third of HIV infection remained undiagnosed in all sites despite 69% of HIV-positive men reporting attending a genitourinary medicine clinic in the last year. Similar and high levels of risk behaviour were reported in all three cities. 18% of HIV-negative men and 37% of HIV-positive men reported unprotected anal intercourse with more than one partner in the last year. 20% of negative men and 41% of positive men reported an STI in the last year.Conclusions: Across all cities, despite widespread availability of anti-retroviral treatment and national policy to promote HIV testing, many HIV infections remain undiagnosed. Data from this community sample demonstrate high levels of risk behaviour and STI incidence, especially among those who are HIV positive. Renewed efforts are needed to increase diagnosis and to reduce risk behaviour to stem the continuing transmission of HIV

    The role of ferroelectric-ferromagnetic layers on the properties of superlattice-based multiferroics

    A series of superlattices and trilayers composed of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric or paraelectric layers were grown on (100) SrTiO3 by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Their structural and magneto-electric properties were examined. The superlattices made of ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 (PCMO) and a ferroelectric, namely Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) or BaTiO3, showed enhanced magnetoresistance (MR) at high applied magnetic field, whereas such enhancement was absent in Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, which clearly demonstrates the preponderant role of the ferroelectric layers in this enhanced MR. Furthermore, the absence of enhanced MR in trilayers of PCMO/BST indicates that the magneto-electric coupling which is responsible for MR in these systems is stronger in multilayers than in their trilayer counterparts.Comment: to be published in J.     Men who have sex with men: a comparison of a probability sample survey and a community based study

    We compared characteristics of men who have sex with men (MSM) in a probability sample survey with a community based study in London. The majority of men in both surveys reported male sex partner(s) in the last year but MSM recruited through the population based survey had lower levels of HIV risk behaviour, reported fewer sexually transmitted infections and HIV testing than those recruited from gay venues. Community samples are likely to overestimate levels of risk behaviour among all MSM

    Investigation of laser ablated ZnO thin films grown with Zn metal target: a structural study

    High quality ZnO thin films were gown using the pulsed laser deposition technique on (0001) Al2_2O3_3 substrates in an oxidizing atmosphere, using a Zn metallic target. We varied the growth conditions such as the deposition temperature and the oxygen pressure. First, using a battery of techniques such as x-rays diffraction, Rutherford Backscattering spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, we evaluated the structural quality, the stress and the degree of epitaxy of the films. Second, the relations between the deposition conditions and the structural properties, that are directly related to the nature of the thin films, are discussed qualitatively.     Control of the colossal magnetoresistance by strain effect in Nd0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} thin films

    Thin films of Nd0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} manganites with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties have been synthesized by the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique on (100)-SrTiO3_{3}. The lattice parameters of these manganites and correlatively their CMR properties can be controlled by the substrate temperature TST_{S}. The maximum CMR effect at 75K, calculated as the ratio ρ(H=0T)/ρ(H=7T)\rho (H=0T)/\rho (H=7T) is 104^4 for a deposition temperature of TS=680T_{S}=680 degC. Structural studies show that the Nd0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} film is single phase, [010]-oriented and has a pseudocubic symmetry of the perovskite subcell with a=3.77A˚\AA at room temperature. We suggest that correlation between lattice parameters, CMR and substrate temperature TST_{S} result mainly from substrate-induced strains which can weaken the charge-ordered state at low temperature.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures.     Stress deformations and structural quenching in Sm0.5Ca0.5MnO3 thin films allow a huge decrease of the charge order melting magnetic field

    Thin films of Sm0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganites with charge ordering (CO) properties and colossal magnetoresistance were synthesized by pulsed laser deposition technique on (100)-SrTiO3 and (100)-LaAlO3 substrates. We first compare the structural modifications as function of the substrate and film thickness. Secondly, measuring transport properties in magnetic fields up to 24T, we establish the temperature-field phase diagram describing the stability of the CO state and compare it to bulk material. We show that some structural modification induced by the substrate occurs and that the CO melting magnetic field is greatly reduced. Moreover, with the temperature decrease, no modification of the lattice parameters is observed. We then propose an explanation based on the quenching of the unit cell of the film that adopts the in-plane lattice parameters of the substrate and thus, prevents the complete growth of the CO state at low temperature.Comment: to be published in Journal of Applied Physic
