    The Ginger-shaped Asteroid 4179 Toutatis: New Observations from a Successful Flyby of Chang'e-2

    On 13 December 2012, Chang'e-2 conducted a successful flyby of the near-Earth asteroid 4179 Toutatis at a closest distance of 770 ±\pm 120 meters from the asteroid's surface. The highest-resolution image, with a resolution of better than 3 meters, reveals new discoveries on the asteroid, e.g., a giant basin at the big end, a sharply perpendicular silhouette near the neck region, and direct evidence of boulders and regolith, which suggests that Toutatis may bear a rubble-pile structure. Toutatis' maximum physical length and width are (4.75 ×\times 1.95 km) ±\pm10%\%, respectively, and the direction of the +zz axis is estimated to be (250±\pm5^\circ, 63±\pm5^\circ) with respect to the J2000 ecliptic coordinate system. The bifurcated configuration is indicative of a contact binary origin for Toutatis, which is composed of two lobes (head and body).     Maneuvering Spacecraft Orbit Determination Using Polynomial Representation

    This paper proposed a polynomial representation-based method for orbit determination (OD) of spacecraft with the unknown maneuver. Different from the conventional maneuvering OD approaches that rely on specific orbit dynamic equation, the proposed method needs no priori information of the unknown maneuvering model. The polynomials are used to represent the unknown maneuver. A transformation is made for the polynomials to improve the convergence and robustness. The Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is used to process incoming observation data by compensating the unknown maneuver using the polynomials. The proposed method is successfully applicated into the OD problem of spacecraft with trigonometric maneuver. Numerical simulations show that the eighth-order polynomials are accurate enough to represent a trigonometric maneuver. Moreover, Monte Carlo simulations show that the position errors are smaller than 1 km, and the maneuver estimated errors are no more than 0.1 mm/s2 using the eighth-order polynomials. The proposed method is accurate and efficient, and has potential applications for tracking maneuvering space target

    A Comprehensive and Automated Fusion Method: The Enhanced Flexible Spatiotemporal DAta Fusion Model for Monitoring Dynamic Changes of Land Surface

    Spatiotemporal fusion methods provide an effective way to generate both high temporal and high spatial resolution data for monitoring dynamic changes of land surface. But existing fusion methods face two main challenges of monitoring the abrupt change events and accurately preserving the spatial details of objects. The Flexible Spatiotemporal DAta Fusion method (FSDAF) was proposed, which can monitor the abrupt change events, but its predicted images lacked intra-class variability and spatial details. To overcome the above limitations, this study proposed a comprehensive and automated fusion method, the Enhanced FSDAF (EFSDAF) method and tested it for Landsat–MODIS image fusion. Compared with FSDAF, the EFSDAF has the following strengths: (1) it considers the mixed pixels phenomenon of a Landsat image, and the predicted images by EFSDAF have more intra-class variability and spatial details; (2) it adjusts the differences between Landsat images and MODIS images; and (3) it improves the fusion accuracy in the abrupt change area by introducing a new residual index (RI). Vegetation phenology and flood events were selected to evaluate the performance of EFSDAF. Its performance was compared with the Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (STARFM), the Spatial and Temporal Reflectance Unmixing Model (STRUM), and FSDAF. Results show that EFSDAF can monitor the changes of vegetation (gradual change) and flood (abrupt change), and the fusion images by EFSDAF are the best from both visual and quantitative evaluations. More importantly, EFSDAF can accurately generate the spatial details of the object and has strong robustness. Due to the above advantages of EFSDAF, it has great potential to monitor long-term dynamic changes of land surface

    Mechanical behaviors of carbon fiber composite sandwich columns with three dimensional honeycomb cores under in-plane compression

    Mechanical properties and failure modes of carbon fiber composite egg and pyramidal honeycombs cores under in plane compression were studied in the present paper. An interlocking method was developed for both kinds of three-dimensional honeycombs. Euler or core shear macro-buckling, face wrinkling, face inter-cell buckling, core member crushing and face sheet crushing were considered and theoretical relationships for predicting the failure load associated with each mode were presented. Failure mechanism maps were constructed to predict the failure of these composite sandwich panels subjected to in-plane compression. The response of the sandwich panels under axial compression was measured up to failure. The measured peak loads obtained in the experiments showed a good agreement with the analytical predictions. The finite element method was used to investigate the Euler buckling of sandwich beams made with two different honeycomb cores and the comparisons between two kinds of honeycomb cores were conducted.Fil: Xiong, Jian.
