    Hemodynamics during pregnancy : a model for cardiac enlargement

    Cardiac output Increases by 30-50% during mammal Ian pregnancy. This Increase Is reflected by elevation In both heart rate and stroke volume. The primary mechanism of Increased stroke volume appears to be cardiac enlargement, rather than increased preload, afterload, or contractility. Animal studies have shown that enlargement of the heart occurs prior to an Increase In uterine blood flow during pregnancy and this type of enlargement can be mimicked by sex steroid administration. Systemic vascular resistance greatly decreases during pregnancy and with sex steroid administration. It has been postulated that systemic vascular resistance may be a signal for heart size changes. This study attempted to chronically decrease systemic vascular resistance by administration of an arterial vasodllator (hydralazlne) over a three week period to guinea pigs. At the time of study hemodynamlcs were measured which Included, heart rate, arterial pressure, right atrial pressure and cardiac output. In vitro left ventricular pressure volume relationships were also evaluated, as was total plasma volume

    The Political Economy of Nursing Homes

    The nursing home industry receives three- quarters of its income from government. The industry earns high profits while providing poor patient care. Considerable swindling of government funds occurs. One category is nickel and diming, which consists of clipping every possible dollar from government money as it passes through nursing home accounts. Another method—large scale and often within the law—involves the manipulation of ownership and mortgages. There are several causes for the failure of government to control nursing home swindles. While there is no lack of regulations, the will to enforce them is lacking. Industry lobbyists are especially influential at the state level, where the Medicaid rate is set. The federal govern ment has failed to collect basic information about the industry and denies the public ready access to the reports on nursing home inspections.     Vermont Adolescent Perception of Barriers to Smoking and Cessation

    Introduction: Despite a decline in youth smoking rates over the past decade, thirteen percent of Vermont high school students still smoke (Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey, YRBS, 2013). Smoking and nicotine exposure at an early age can have detrimental effects on brain development and lead to long term, sustained tobacco use (Arrazola et. al 2015). It was our goal to characterize the barriers to cessation for these adolescents. Some important factors suggested by the literature include living with someone who smokes (50% of VT teen smokers report a parent or guardian who smokes) and having a close friend who smokes (70% of VT teen smokers) (American Lung Association 2015). Nationally, while teen smoking rates continue to decline, the decrease is being offset by a significant increase in electronic vapor products (e-cigs) (12% increase from 2011-2014) (Arrazola et. al 2015). The 2013 Vermont YRBS data may therefore be misleading, and not capture this increase in tobacco and e-cig use.     The mechanisms responsible for 2-dimensional pattern formation in bacterial macrofiber populations grown on solid surfaces: fiber joining and the creation of exclusion zones

    BACKGROUND: When Bacillus subtilis is cultured in a complex fluid medium under conditions where cell separation is suppressed, populations of multicellular macrofibers arise that mature into ball-like structures. The final sedentary forms are found distributed in patterns on the floor of the growth chamber although individual cells have no flagellar-driven motility. The nature of the patterns and their mode of formation are described in this communication. RESULTS: Time-lapse video films reveal that fiber-fiber contact in high density populations of macrofibers resulted in their joining either by entwining or supercoiling. Joining led to the production of aggregate structures that eventually contained all of the fibers located in an initial area. Fibers were brought into contact by convection currents and motions associated with macrofiber self-assembly such as walking, pivoting and supercoiling. Large sedentary aggregate structures cleared surrounding areas of other structures by dragging them into the aggregate using supercoiling of extended fibers to power dragging. The spatial distribution of aggregate structures in 6 mature patterns containing a total of 637 structures was compared to that expected in random theoretical populations of the same size distributed in the same surface area. Observed and expected patterns differ significantly. The distances separating all nearest neighbors from one another in observed populations were also measured. The average distance obtained from 1451 measurements involving 519 structures was 0.73 cm. These spacings were achieved without the use of flagella or other conventional bacterial motility mechanisms. A simple mathematical model based upon joining of all structures within an area defined by the minimum observed distance between structures in populations explains the observed distributions very well. CONCLUSIONS: Bacterial macrofibers are capable of colonizing a solid surface by forming large multicellular aggregate structures that are distributed in unique two-dimensional patterns. Cell growth geometry governs in an hierarchical way the formation of these patterns using forces associated with twisting and supercoiling to drive motions and the joining of structures together. Joining by entwining, supercoiling or dragging all require cell growth in a multicellular form, and all result in tightly fused aggregate structures

    Spectral properties of random graphs with fixed equitable partition

    We define a graph to be SS-regular if it contains an equitable partition given by a matrix SS. These graphs are generalizations of both regular and bipartite, biregular graphs. An SS-regular matrix is defined then as a matrix on an SS-regular graph consistent with the graph's equitable partition. In this paper we derive the limiting spectral density for large, random SS-regular matrices as well as limiting functions of certain statistics for their eigenvector coordinates as a function of eigenvalue. These limiting functions are defined in terms of spectral measures on SS-regular trees. In general, these spectral measures do not have a closed-form expression; however, we provide a defining system of polynomials for them. Finally, we explore eigenvalue bounds of SS-regular graph, proving an expander mixing lemma, Alon-Bopana bound, and other eigenvalue inequalities in terms of the eigenvalues of the matrix SS.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figure

    Limiting Federal Agency Preemption: Recommendations for a New Federalism Executive Order

    The structure of the U.S. Constitution reflects a profound respect for the principles of federalism and state sovereignty. These principles require the federal government to recognize and encourage opportunities for state and local governments to exercise their authority, especially in areas of traditional state concern such as the protection of the health, safety, and welfare of their citizens. However, over the last six years there has been a coordinated Executive Branch effortto use the regulatory process to shield certain product manufacturers from state tort liability. The Food and Drug Administration, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and Consumer Product Safety Commission, among others, have attempted to use the doctrine of preemption to block consumers’ access to state courts. During the Bush Administration, executive agencies have included assertions of preemption in regulatory preambles, filed amicus briefs in litigation in which other litigants have argued that federal statutes preempt state law, and submitted to Congress draft legislation that would preempt state and local authority to protect public health, safety, and the environment. The Obama administration should replace Executive Order 13132, which instructs administrative agencies to consider the federalism implications of their actions, with an Executive Order that is more protective of the legitimate interests of state governments in maintaining their traditional role in protecting the health, safety and welfare of their citizens. While the current order has some desirable features, it is inadequate to prompt the type of deliberations in which agencies should engage when they are considering whether to support the preemption of state law

In the Aging web , references to holding a Senior Prom is a theme throughout. The same is true of the Hunger and Homelessness web where holding a Hunger Banquet becomes a school wide project. MSPAP and Service-learning: Service-learning and MSPAP are natural fit. Both incorporate real-life learning, problem-solving, critical thinking, and the opportunity to apply skills. Goals of this project: It is hoped that these webs accomplish 2 goals: 1- to increase understanding of service learning and its contributions to application of knowledge.2- to encourage curricular webbing that helps increase overall learning and understanding

    Tunable Fiber‐Cavity Enhanced Photon Emission from Defect Centers in hBN

    Realization of quantum photonic devices requires coupling single quantum emitters to the mode of optical resonators. In this work, a hybrid system consisting of defect centers in few-layer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) grown by chemical vapor deposition and a fiber-based Fabry–PĂ©rot cavity is presented. The sub 10-nm thickness of hBN and its smooth surface enable efficient integration into the cavity mode. This hybrid platform is operated over a broad spectral range larger than 30 nm and its tuneability is used to explore different coupling regimes. Consequently, very large cavity-assisted signal enhancement up to 50-fold and strongly narrowed linewidths are achieved, which is owing to cavity funneling, a record for hBN-cavity systems. Additionally, an excitation and readout scheme is implemented for resonant excitation that allows to establish cavity-assisted photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectroscopy. This work marks an important milestone for the deployment of 2D materials coupled to fiber-based cavities in practical quantum technologies
