    HEMODIALYSIS-RELATED LYMPHOMONONUCLEAR RELEASE OF INTERLEUKIN 12 IN PATIENTS WITH END-STAGE RENAL DISEASE.

    Abstract: Interleukin-12 (IL-12) is a cytokine produced by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) that causes interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) production and enhancement of cell-mediated cytotoxicity. To clarify the role of hemodialysis biocompatibility on IL-12 production and uremic immunodeficiency, we have studied the IL-12 and IFN-gamma release by PBMC harvested from 12 patients dialyzed with cuprophan membrane (CU), eight patients dialyzed with polymethylmethacrylate membrane (PMMA), and eight nondialyzed uremic patients (UR). Ten healthy subjects constituted the control group (CON). PBMC were cultured for 48 h with and without nonspecific mitogen stimulation. In unstimulated conditions, CU showed an IL-12 PBMC production higher than CON, UR, and PMMA (46.67 +/- 30.13 versus 2.56 +/- 1.38, 6.16 +/- 7.09, and 4.62 +/- 4.76 pg/ml, respectively; P < 0.01). IL-12 production was correlated with C3a concentration measured at the outlet of hemodialyzer after 15 min of dialysis (r = 0.69, P < 0.01). IL-12 release in CU remained unchanged under mitogen stimulation (44.34 +/- 23.86 pg/ml) and was lower than in CON, UR, and PMMA (66.0 +/- 12.41, 68.37 +/- 25.78, and 67.75 +/- 22.61 pg/ml, respectively; P < 0.05). IFN-gamma production was similar, in unstimulated conditions, in all groups. Under stimulation, IFN-gamma release was lower in CU (13.42 +/- 12.04 IU/ml) than in CON, UR, and PMMA (51.84 +/- 30.74, 32.16 +/- 13.86, and 32.16 +/- 13.86 IU/ml, respectively; P < 0.01). These results demonstrate that hemodialysis with CU induces monocyte activation with an enhanced release of IL-12. On the contrary, stimulated PBMC production of both IL-12 and IFN-gamma is lower in these patients than in CON, UR, and PMMA. The altered release of these cytokines could play a role in cell-mediated immunodeficiency of the uremic patients dialyzed with CU

    LeviSense: A platform for the multisensory integration in levitating food and insights into its effect on flavour perception

    Eating is one of the most multisensory experiences in everyday life. All of our five senses (i.e. taste, smell, vision, hearing and touch) are involved, even if we are not aware of it. However, while multisensory integration has been well studied in psychology, there is not a single platform for testing systematically the effects of different stimuli. This lack of platform results in unresolved design challenges for the design of taste-based immersive experiences. Here, we present LeviSense: the first system designed for multisensory integration in gustatory experiences based on levitated food. Our system enables the systematic exploration of different sensory effects on eating experiences. It also opens up new opportunities for other professionals (e.g., molecular gastronomy chefs) looking for innovative taste-delivery platforms. We describe the design process behind LeviSense and conduct two experiments to test a subset of the crossmodal combinations (i.e., taste and vision, taste and smell). Our results show how different lighting and smell conditions affect the perceived taste intensity, pleasantness, and satisfaction. We discuss how LeviSense creates a new technical, creative, and expressive possibilities in a series of emerging design spaces within Human-Food Interaction

    Un-biodegradable and biodegradable plastic sheets modify the soil properties after six months since their applications

    Nowadays, microplastics represent emergent pollutants in terrestrial ecosystems that exert impacts on soil properties, affecting key soil ecological functions. In agroecosystems, plastic mulching is one of the main sources of plastic residues in soils. The present research aimed to evaluate the effects of two types of plastic sheets (un-biodegradable and biodegradable) on soil abiotic (pH, water content, concentrations of organic and total carbon, and total nitrogen) and biotic (respiration, and activities of hydrolase, dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase and urease) properties, and on phytotoxicity (germination index of Sorghum saccharatum L. and Lepidium sativum L.). Results revealed that soil properties were mostly affected by exposure time to plastics rather than the kind (un-biodegradable and biodegradable) of plastics. After six months since mesocosm setting up, the presence of un-biodegradable plastic sheets significantly decreased soil pH, respiration and dehydrogenase activity and increased total and organic carbon concentrations, and toxicity highlighted by S. saccharatum L. Instead, the presence of biodegradable plastic sheets significantly decreased dehydrogenase activity and increased organic carbon concentrations. Foucault (1966), il s’est agi de saisir les marges étudiées à travers le cadre des conditions discursives, symboliques et sociales ainsi que des pratiques qui président à leur apparition et à leur « avènement ». Nos travaux, conduits sur des terrains partagés entre le Nord et le Sud de la Méditerranée, nous ont confortés dans l’idée que les marges urbaines étaient le plus souvent engendrées, produites et érigées par des processus ayant trait à des systèmes de représentations et à des pratiques de stigmatisation émanant des acteurs urbains dominants, mais qu’elles pouvaient résulter aussi de processus cumulatifs ou alternatifs d’endossement ou, au contraire, de résistance, voire de renversement de sens de la part de leurs populations
