    DEISA (Diversity and Equity Interventions in South Africa) was a research programme which studied the transformation "industry" in South Africa, exploring issues such as the kinds of interventions. The content of this report has been used as part of the Diversity Studies MPhil Programme at the University of Cape Town. Specifically, it has been used for the course "Diversity Implementation and Practice", a course which introduces students to the strategies used, and challenges faced by, diversity practitioners in South Africa. This report could also be useful for the study of human resource management and industrial sociology in post-apartheid South Africa

    Grade 8 teachersā€™ needs in preparation for the implementation of the technical and vocational curriculum in education

    Abstract: Education has invariably been important in the transferring of knowledge and skills. The main purpose of education in schools is to educate our youth within society, to prepare and to qualify them for the world of work. However, South Africa presents with increasing dropout rates, resulting in more youth that are unqualified and unprepared to enter the workforce. These learners are unemployed and do not have access to education or training. Consequently, this adds to the existing shortage of skilled workers in our country. Our country has long since acknowledged our shortage of skills given the lack of skills training both in school and after the first exit stage. While South Africaā€™s basic education programme is academically orientated, the education system fails our less academically inclined youth, leaving them with limited options either to earn an income or to study further. The Department of Education developed a threestream Technical and Vocational Education system which was piloted in 2017 and planned for implementation in some secondary schools in 2018. The aim is to introduce a curriculum which will serve the diverse needs of all youth of South Africa, to encourage skills training and to develop their creativity. While secondary teachers are currently at the frontline of the delivering of this curriculum, the challenge is to train and prepare them for the implementation of the technical and vocational curriculum in education. The aim of this study is to explore Grade 8 teachersā€™ needs in preparing for the implementation of the technical and vocational curriculum in education. The research followed a constructivist paradigm through purposeful sampling of Grade 8 teachers as participants. Data was collected by conducting semi-structured individual and group interviews as well as photovoice. The data was analysed by using thematic analysis. By using the constructivism theory as the framework of this study, three main themes emerged. The first was ā€˜the role of education stakeholders,ā€™ with the sub-themes, ā€˜partnerships with industriesā€™, ā€˜community and parental involvementā€™, ā€˜learner placement assessmentā€™ and the ā€˜promoting of TVEā€™. The second theme referred to ā€˜the role of the SMT,ā€™ such as ā€˜the provision of policies, training and curricular supportā€™, as well as ā€˜the allocation and managing of funding and equipmentā€™.     Characteristics of temporal fluctuations in the hyperpolarized state of the cortical slow oscillation

    We present evidence for the hypothesis that transitions between the low- and high-firing states of the cortical slow oscillation correspond to neuronal phase transitions. By analyzing intracellular recordings of the membrane potential during the cortical slow oscillation in rats, we quantify the temporal fluctuations in power and the frequency centroid of the power spectrum in the period of time before ā€œdownā€ to ā€œupā€ transitions. By taking appropriate averages over such events, we present these statistics as a function of time before transition. The results demonstrate an increase in fluctuation power and time scale broadly consistent with the slowing of systems close to phase transitions. The analysis is complicated and limited by the difficulty in identifying when transitions begin, and removing dc trends in membrane potential

    Postnatal Ī²2 adrenergic treatment improves insulin sensitivity in lambs with IUGR but not persistent defects in pancreatic islets or skeletal muscle

    Placental insufficiency causes intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and disturbances in glucose homeostasis with associated Ī² adrenergic receptor (ADRĪ²) desensitization. Our objectives were to measure insulin-sensitive glucose metabolism in neonatal lambs with IUGR and to determine whether daily treatment with ADRĪ²2 agonist and ADRĪ²1/Ī²3 antagonists for 1 month normalizes their glucose metabolism. Growth, glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) and glucose utilization rates (GURs) were measured in control lambs, IUGR lambs and IUGR lambs treated with adrenergic receptor modifiers: clenbuterol atenolol and SR59230A (IUGR-AR). In IUGR lambs, islet insulin content and GSIS were less than in controls; however, insulin sensitivity and whole-bodyGUR were not different from controls.Of importance, ADRĪ²2 stimulation with Ī²1/Ī²3 inhibition increases both insulin sensitivity and whole-body glucose utilization in IUGR lambs. In IUGR and IUGR-AR lambs, hindlimb GURs were greater but fractional glucose oxidation rates and ex vivo skeletal muscle glucose oxidation rates were lower than controls. Glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) was lower in IUGR and IUGR-AR skeletal muscle than in controls but GLUT1 was greater in IUGR-AR. ADRĪ²2, insulin receptor, glycogen content and citrate synthase activity were similar among groups. In IUGR and IUGR-AR lambs heart rates were greater, which was independent of cardiac ADRĪ²1 activation. We conclude that targeted ADRĪ²2 stimulation improved whole-body insulin sensitivity but minimally affected defects in GSIS and skeletal muscle glucose oxidation. We show that risk factors for developing diabetes are independent of postnatal catch-up growth in IUGR lambs as early as 1 month of age and are inherent to the islets and myocytes

    The mutational profile in a South African cohort with inherited neuropathies and spastic paraplegia

    INTRODUCTION: Limited diagnostics are available for inherited neuromuscular diseases (NMD) in South Africa and (excluding muscle disease) are mainly aimed at the most frequent genes underlying genetic neuropathy (GN) and spastic ataxias in Europeans. In this study, we used next-generation sequencing to screen 61 probands with GN, hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), and spastic ataxias for a genetic diagnosis. METHODS: After identifying four GN probands with PMP22 duplication and one spastic ataxia proband with SCA1, the remaining probands underwent whole exome (n = 26) or genome sequencing (n = 30). The curation of coding/splice region variants using gene panels was guided by allele frequencies from internal African-ancestry control genomes (n = 537) and the Clinical Genome Resource's Sequence Variant Interpretation guidelines. RESULTS: Of 32 GN probands, 50% had African-genetic ancestry, and 44% were solved: PMP22 (n = 4); MFN2 (n = 3); one each of MORC2, ATP1A1, ADPRHL2, GJB1, GAN, MPZ, and ATM. Of 29 HSP probands (six with predominant ataxia), 66% had African-genetic ancestry, and 48% were solved: SPG11 (n = 3); KIF1A (n = 2); and one each of SPAST, ATL1, SPG7, PCYT2, PSEN1, ATXN1, ALDH18A1, CYP7B1, and RFT1. Structural variants in SPAST, SPG11, SPG7, MFN2, MPZ, KIF5A, and GJB1 were excluded by computational prediction and manual visualisation. DISCUSSION: In this preliminary cohort screening panel of disease genes using WES/WGS data, we solved ~50% of cases, which is similar to diagnostic yields reported for global cohorts. However, the mutational profile among South Africans with GN and HSP differs substantially from that in the Global North

    "Decolonising the Human examines the ongoing project of constituting ā€˜the humanā€™ in light of the durability of coloniality and the persistence of multiple oppressions. The ā€˜humanā€™ emerges as a deeply political category, historically constructed as a scarce existential resource. Once weaponised, it allows for the social, political and economic elevation of those who are centred within its magic circle, and the degradation, marginalisation and immiseration of those excluded as the different and inferior Other, the less than human. Speaking from Africa, a key site where the category of the human has been used throughout European modernity to control, exclude and deny equality of being, the contributors use decoloniality as a potent theoretical and philosophical tool, gesturing towards a liberated, pluriversal world where human difference will be recognised as a gift, not used to police the boundaries of the human. Here is a transdisciplinary critical exploration of a wide range of subjects, including history, politics, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and decolonial studies.
