Generating connected acyclic digraphs uniformly at random

We describe a simple algorithm based on a Markov chain process to generate simply connected acyclic directed graphs over a fixed set of vertices. This algorithm is an extension of a previous one, designed to generate acyclic digraphs, non necessarily connected.Comment: 6 page

Liberty, Equality, Laicity: Québec’s Charter of Values and the Reframing of Politics

    Get PDF
The debate around Québec's proposed "Charter of Values" in 2013 and 2014 occupied the centre of the political, intellectual, and academic attention space. However, this proposed legislation was discussed across Canada on the basis of limited information in view of documents which were only available in French and of the specific historical and political context that remained unexplored. Once set in this context and in light of the manifestos that answered it, the Québec "Charter of Values" can be seen as an attempt to develop a renewed cultural nationalism in terms of criteria for adhesion and belonging to the Québecois nation. In appealing to values said to be held by Quebecers and establishing a distinction from those who do not share these values of democracy, equality between women and men, and laicity, the "Charter of Values" has the effect of providing a new framework for democratic politics and the exercise of rights and freedoms

Perception of and reactions to the presence of URL\u27s in print advertising of a non-technology brand

    Get PDF
This thesis, through an experiment of 108 subjects, studies the relationship between the presence of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL or web address) in newspaper advertisements and perception of the product advertised as well as the likelihood to act on the advertisement. The findings reveal URLs do in fact have an effect on perception, although, as it is suggested in the theoretical framework, it does not necessarily induce the subjects to act on the ad. This study also finds there is a stronger inclination for perception change to take place versus the likelihood for consumers to either seek more information or make a purchase of the brand advertised. The results indicate brands are much less likely to be considered “high-tech” or “cutting edge” when a URL is included in a newspaper advertisement. This is a departure from earlier work that suggested the inclusion of such URLs would have a positive effect on brand value and/or the perception of the company sponsoring the advertisement. The findings also indicate advertisers may have to change the way they present the use of a company’s Web technology. The “magic bullet” of positive associations with technology in the minds of consumers is losing its efficacy from decreased sensitivity to URL saturation in print ads

Community College Funding and its Association to Nontraditional Students

    Get PDF
The funding of community and technical colleges has been a major topic of discussion in many states because community and technical colleges are critical for states\u27 economic development and talent development strategies. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the type of funding at community and technical colleges in southeastern states and their nontraditional student enrollment trends. The researcher investigated the growth of community and technical college enrollment by analyzing southeastern United States community and technical colleges\u27 part-time 25 to 44 year-old undergraduate enrollment rates for the years of 1995, 2000 and 2005, and how the funding of these schools was associated with the states\u27 enrollment of nontraditional students. It was found that community and technical colleges that received local appropriation revenue for the years of 1995, 2000, and 2005 had higher percentages of nontraditional students enrolled in their systems than community and technical colleges that did not receive local appropriation. Community and technical college administrators and their governing boards can use these findings as additional justification to policy makers for support options to include the use of local appropriation revenues or maintain local appropriation revenues for community and technical colleges as an alternative to increasing tuition and fees

Mechanisms controlling the microchemistry and composition of fish otoliths

    Get PDF
Understanding the growth and composition of otoliths continues to be a fundamental challenge for chemists and biologists. Since the recognition of the daily increment pattern in the 1970s, there has been a growing interest in otolith microstructure. The purpose of my Ph.D. dissertation was to understand the mechanisms controlling otolith microchemistry and the factors affecting metal uptake in fish otoliths. In Chapter 2, I utilized chemical and spectroscopic analyses of vaterite and aragonite growth in sagittal otoliths of lake trout in an effort to better understand the crystalline growth process. I was also interested in learning about the elemental partitioning of metals. Chapter 3 investigated the nucleation of otoliths to determine how otoliths crystallized and if there was a catalyst that would help the crystallization. I also wanted to see how that affected elemental uptake. A preliminary study, conducted on walleye (Sander vitreus) endolymph and otolith composition is also included where the fractionation of metals is investigated. In Chapter 4, metal partitioning between otolith and endolymph of two freshwater species: lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and burbot (Lota Iota) is studied. In this chapter I also analyzed blood and surface water to give new insights on the partitioning of metals between these filters. Lastly, Chapter 5 explored the turnover rates of barium and strontium in the blood, bones, whole bodies and otoliths of yellow perch (Perca flavescens ) using enriched isotope tracers (strontium and barium). The ultimate goal of this research is to improve the ability of scientists to use otolith microchemical investigations for fisheries-related research and management
