Gamma Irradiation of Aqueos Solution of L-Aspartic Acid, L-Aspartic Acid in Solid State, and L-Aspartic Acid Adsorbed into Na-Montmorillonite: Its Relevance in Chemistry Prebiotic
Aspartic acid is an amino acid present in the modern proteins, however, is considered a primitive amino acid hence its importance in prebiotic chemistry experiments studies. In some works of prebiotic chemistry have been studied the synthesis and the stability of organic matter under high energy sources, and the role of clays has been highlighted due to clays that can affect the reaction mechanisms in the radiolytic processes. The present work is focused on the study of the role of Namontmorillonite in the gamma radiolysis processes of L-aspartic acid. Gamma radiolysis processes were carried out in three different systems a) L-aspartic acid in aqueous solution; b) L-aspartic acid in solid-state; and c) L-aspartic acid adsorbed into Na-montmorillonite. L-aspartic acid was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography−electrospray ionization−mass spectrometry (HPLCESI-MS). The results showed that the decomposition of L-aspartic acid considerably decreased in the presence of clay thus highlighting the protector role of clays and favors the stability of organic matter even under the possible high energy conditions of primitive environments. The principal product ofgamma radiolysis of L-aspartic acid was succinic acid produced by deamination reaction. On the other hand, when aspartic acid was irradiated in solid-state the main product was the L-aspartic acid dimer. Both radiolysis products are important for chemical evolution processes for L-aspartic acid in primitive environments
Deformación plástica de compuestos mullita/óxido de itrio
Los compuestos a partir de mullita (3Al2 O3 .2SiO2 ) presentan unas magníficas propiedades mecánicas y térmicas. Las mismas características que hacen de la mullita resistente a la deformación plástica, dificultan su densificación. El óxido de itrio es uno de los aditivos más utilizados para reducir la temperatura de sinterización de la mullita. Adicionalmente la presencia de silicatos vítreos (en este caso Y2 Si2 O7 ) incrementan la ductilidad. En esta investigación se han usado muestras de mullita con diversas cantidades de Y2 O3 (0%, 5% y 9% en peso). Los detalles sobre el procesado y caracterización de los compuestos han sido objeto de una publicación previa. Se ha estudiado comparativamente la ductilidad de estos materiales mediante experimentos de deformación en compresión a alta temperatura. Los ensayos se han desarrollado entre 1300 y 1400ºC, en atmósfera de aire, cubriendo un rango de tensiones de compresión entre 0.69 y 34.4 MPa.Mullite (3Al2

this work we have used mullite samples with various amounts of Y2
O3 (0, 5 and 9 wt.%). Details of processing and characterization
of these composites have been the subject of a previous publication. We have compared the ductility of these composites
by means of compressive deformation tests at elevated temperatures. Creep tests were performed at temperatures
between 1300 and 1400ºC, in air, in a stress range of 0.69 to 34.5 MPa
Biodiversity of ecosystems in an arid setting: The late Albian plant communities and associated biota from eastern Iberia
Deserts are stressful environments where the living beings must acquire different strategies to survive due to the water stress conditions. From the late Albian to the early Cenomanian, the northern and eastern parts of Iberia were the location of the desert system represented by deposits assigned to the Utrillas Group, which bear abundant amber with numerous bioinclusions, including diverse arthropods and vertebrate remains. In the Maestrazgo Basin (E Spain), the late Albian to early Cenomanian sedimentary succession represents the most distal part of the desert system (fore-erg) that was characterised by an alternation of aeolian and shallow marine sedimentary environments in the proximity of the Western Tethys palaeo-coast, with rare to frequent dinoflagellate cysts. The terrestrial ecosystems from this area were biodiverse, and comprised plant communities whose fossils are associated with sedimentological indicators of aridity. The palynoflora dominated by wind-transported conifer pollen is interpreted to reflect various types of xerophytic woodlands from the hinterlands and the coastal settings. Therefore, fern and angiosperm communities abundantly grew in wet interdunes and coastal wetlands (temporary to semi-permanent freshwater/salt marshes and water bodies). In addition, the occurrence of low-diversity megafloral assemblages reflects the existence of coastal salt-influenced settings. The palaeobotanical study carried out in this paper which is an integrative work on palynology and palaeobotany, does not only allow the reconstruction of the vegetation that developed in the mid-Cretaceous fore-erg from the eastern Iberia, in addition, provides new biostratigraphic and palaeogeographic data considering the context of angiosperm radiation as well as the biota inferred in the amber-bearing outcrops of San Just, Arroyo de la Pascueta and La Hoya (within Cortes de Arenoso succesion). Importantly, the studied assemblages include Afropollis, Dichastopollenites, Cretacaeiporites together with pollen produced by Ephedraceae (known for its tolerance to arid conditions). The RSPH4A Gene in Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia
The radial spoke head protein 4 homolog A (RSPH4A) gene is one of more than 50 genes that cause Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a rare genetic ciliopathy. Genetic mutations in the RSPH4A gene alter an important protein structure involved in ciliary pathogenesis. Radial spoke proteins, such as RSPH4A, have been conserved across multiple species. In humans, ciliary function deficiency caused by RSPH4A pathogenic variants results in a clinical phenotype characterized by recurrent oto-sino-pulmonary infections. More than 30 pathogenic RSPH4A genetic variants have been associated with PCD. In Puerto Rican Hispanics, a founder mutation (RSPH4A (c.921+3_921+6delAAGT (intronic)) has been described. The spectrum of the RSPH4A PCD phenotype does not include laterality defects, which results in a challenging diagnosis. PCD diagnostic tools can combine transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nasal nitric oxide (nNO), High-Speed Video microscopy Analysis (HSVA), and immunofluorescence. The purpose of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of current knowledge about the RSPH4A gene in PCD, ranging from basic science to human clinical phenotype
Detection of hepatitis C virus RNA in saliva of patients with active infection not associated with periodontal or liver disease severity
BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is mainly transmitted by parenteral route, being blood transfusion and intravenous drug use the most frequent risk factors. However, it has been suggested that there are other routes of transmission. There are several studies where HCV RNA has been detected in saliva of patients infected with HCV, and epidemiological studies have proposed the dental treatments as possible risk factors for HCV transmission. The purpose of this study was to detect the presence of HCV RNA in saliva of patients with active infection and associating with periodontal or liver disease. METHODS: Patients with quantifiable HCV-RNA in serum were enrolled in the study. Periodontal disease was assessed using the modified gingival index (MGI). Presence of dental plaque was assessed with the use of disclosing tablets. Patients were clinically and laboratory evaluated to identify the stage of liver disease, the HCV RNA was determinate in saliva by nested RT-PCR. To determine associations between different parameters univariate and multivariate analysis were used. RESULTS: A total of 45 patients were included. Of these patients, 21 (46.6%) had hepatitis, 23 (51.1%) had cirrhosis and one patient (2.4%) presented hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Viral loads in serum ranged from 2.31–6.68 log IU/ml with a mean of 5.46 log IU/ml (95% CI 5.23–5.70). HCV RNA was positive in saliva of 29 patients (64.4%) and was not detected in 16 (35.6%). For univariate analysis three independent variables were associated with the detection of HCV-RNA in saliva: gender, viral load and dental plaque and multivariate analysis only one independent variable viral load >5.17 log IU/mL remained significantly associated with the detection of HCV in saliva (p = 0.0002). A statistical difference was observed when viral load was analyzed, log 5.85 IU/mL (95% CI 5.67–6.02) for patients with HCV in saliva vs. log 4.77 IU/mL (95% CI 4.35–5.19) for patients without HCV in saliva (p = 0.0001). The detection of HCV-RNA in saliva was more frequent in patients with relatively high serum viral loads. CONCLUSION: HCV-RNA in saliva was associated with the level of serum viral load but not with periodontal or liver disease severity

A good Internet platform for teaching and research must be accessible, independently of the computer platform used, language and other peculiarities (personal or external). This work analyzes the current limitations of Internet access, as well as the potentialities that would represent an access being truly independent of the computer platform, discapacities, availability and speed of access, language and legislation. Thus, the benefits for a more accesible network for lecturing and investigation, overcoming the geographic location or possible discapacity, would be immediate and would have a broad impact spectrum. A more accesible Internet would enhace not only the dissemination of the information, approaching us to the 'global village', but also others aspects like university principles and values that sould be considered: an improvement of the equality of opportunities and the access to the culture and the education, that are the basis of the progress and the individual and collective liberties.Una buena plataforma de docencia e investigación en la red debe ser accesible, independientemente del entorno informático, idioma y condicionantes( personales o externos). Es este trabajo se analizan, por una parte, las limitaciones actuales que se presentan en el acceso a Internet, y por otra las potencialidades que tendría un acceso un acceso independiente de las plataforma informáticas, discapacidades, disponibilidad y velocidad de acceso, idioma y legislación. Así, los beneficios para la docencia y la investigación de una red más accesible, por encima de la localización geográfica o posible discapacidad, serán inmediatos y redundaría en otros campos. Relación entre variables del forófito y la riqueza de epífitas vasculares en los Pantanos de Centla, Tabasco, México
Background and Aims: Vascular epiphytes are rare elements of mangrove-dominated forests because sea salinity causes extreme conditions that difficult their establishment. In southern Mexico, most of the studies about the relationships between epiphytes and phorophytes have been carried out in montane forests, while the mangrove forests have received little attention. Our aim was to analyze the relationships between epiphytic species richness and the phorophyte characteristics of Rhizophora mangle, an endangered species under the NOM-059-SEMARNAT- 2010, in the “Pantanos de Centla” Biosphere Reserve located in the north-east of the state of Tabasco.Methods: The relation between species richness of epiphytes and several variables of the phorophytes, such as the aerial root coverage, diameter at breast height (DBH) and height, was evaluated using linear regression models. In addition, phorophytes were divided into five vertical zones to analyze the vertical distribution of the epiphytes using the Sørensen and Margalef indexes.Key results: Seventeen species of epiphytes were recorded. Orchidaceae and Bromeliaceae were the families with the highest species richness (six each). The most representative genus was Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae) with five species. The epiphytic species richness was significantly correlated with phorophyte aerial root coverage and DBH. The phorophyte zones I and III were the most similar because they shared 47% of all recorded species. The zone I (aerial roots) showed the highest epiphyte species richness. In the zone V (outer portion of the canopy) only Selenicereus testudo (Cactaceae) was registered, a species that was found in all five zones of the phorophyte. The mangrove area studied has a relatively high epiphyte richness in spite of the high salinity present in its flooded habitat.Conclusions: Epiphytic species richness was determined by the variation in size of the phorophytes. The aerial roots of R. mangle are an additional niche for the colonization of epiphytes and not just a supporting structure for the unstable soil of the mangrove ecosystem.Antecedentes y Objetivos: Las epífitas vasculares son elementos poco comunes en manglares debido a que la salinidad del agua de mar impone condiciones extremas que dificultan su establecimiento. En el sur de México se han realizado estudios sobre las relaciones epífitas-forófito, principalmente en bosques montanos, pero hay pocos trabajos enfocados en los manglares. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar las relaciones entre la riqueza de epífitas y las características de los forófitos de Rhizophora mangle, especie amenazada de acuerdo a la NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, en la Reserva de la Biosfera “Pantanos de Centla”, ubicada en el noreste del estado de Tabasco.Métodos: Se evaluó la relación entre la riqueza de epífitas y algunas variables de los forófitos, como la altura, el diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP) y la cobertura de raíces aéreas, mediante modelos de regresión lineal. Además, los forófitos se dividieron en cinco zonas verticales para analizar la distribución vertical de las epífitas aplicando los índices de Sørensen y Margalef.Resultados clave: Se registraron 17 especies de epífitas. Orchidaceae y Bromeliaceae fueron las familias con mayor riqueza (seis especies cada una). El género más representativo fue Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae) con cinco especies. La riqueza de epífitas estuvo significativamente relacionada con la cobertura de raíces aéreas y el DAP de los forófitos. Las zonas I y III de los forófitos fueron las más similares ya que compartieron 47% del total de las especies registradas. La zona I (raíces aéreas) fue la más rica en especies de epífitas. En la zona V (parte exterior de la copa) solo se encontró a Selenicereus testudo (Cactaceae), especie también hallada en el resto de las zonas. El área de manglar estudiado presenta una riqueza relativamente alta de epífitas pese a la alta salinidad presente en su hábitat inundado.Conclusiones: La variación de los tamaños de los forófitos determinó la riqueza de epífitas. Las raíces aéreas de R. mangle son un nicho adicional para la colonización de epífitas y no solamente sirven como soporte al suelo inestable del ecosistema de manglar
