This paper outlines an ongoing PhD research with the aim to develop an alternative fashion design and garment construction process for the initial design stages, using a practice initiated in three dimensions. The paper was partly triggered by views that meanwhile, especially in design education, there is a need to underline more the practical aspects of the design and making process, for example pattern cutting skills. One industry commentator said: “We have often taken on ex-fashion students either as staff or for work experience, and the majority have never been taught pattern-cutting, yet expecting glittering careers in design” (Everett, 2008) The nature of this design practice research utilizes tacit knowledge. It was therefore necessary to find a method to express such tacit knowledge in a tangible form. Due to its exploratory nature and the need for substantial iterative practical work, the reflective, practice-oriented approach of Action Research was used as lead methodology

Giant Magnons and Spiky Strings on S^3 with B-field

We study solutions for a rotating string on S^3 with a background NS-NS B-field and show the existence of spiky string and giant magnon as two limiting solutions. We make a connection to the sine-Gordon model via the Polyakov worldsheet action and study the effect of B-field. In particular, we find the magnon solution can be mapped to the excitation of a fractional spin chain. We conjecture a B-deformed SYM to be the gauge theory dual to this background.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, more references adde

Modular matrices from universal wave function overlaps in Gutzwiller-projected parton wave functions

We implement the universal wave function overlap (UWFO) method to extract modular SS and TT matrices for topological orders in Gutzwiller-projected parton wave functions (GPWFs). The modular SS and TT matrices generate a projective representation of SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z}) on the degenerate-ground-state Hilbert space on a torus and may fully characterize the 2+1D topological orders, i.e. the quasi-particle statistics and chiral central charge (up to E8E_8 bosonic quantum Hall states). We used the variational Monte Carlo method to computed the SS and TT matrices of the chiral spin liquid (CSL) constructed by the GPWF on the square lattice, and confirm that the CSL carries the same topological order as the ν=12\nu=\frac{1}{2} bosonic Laughlin state. We find that the non-universal exponents in UWFO can be small and direct numerical computation is able to be applied on relatively large systems. We also discuss the UWFO method for GPWFs on other Bravais lattices in two and three dimensions by using the Monte Carlo method. UWFO may be a powerful method to calculate the topological order in GPWFs.Comment: 5 pages with 3 figure

Foreign direct investment, regional geographical and market conditions, and regional development: a panel study on China

    No full text
This paper uses regional panel data to investigate the mechanism of how FDI has contributed to China’s regional development through quantifying regional marketization level. It is found that FDI inflow generates a demonstration effect in identifying regional market conditions for investment in fixed assets and hence affects industrial location. In addition, its effects on regional export and regional income growth varied across east, central and west China since the second half of the 1990s, depending on FDI-orientation in different regions. In east China, geographical advantage in export attracts FDI inflow and FDI promotes export. In addition, rise of FDI-GDP ratio increases regional share in industrial value added in east China. These effects contribute positively to regional income growth in east China although there is a direct crowding out effect between FDI and domestic investment (as input) in growth. In contrast, the negative impact of FDI inflow in central China on regional export orientation weakens its contribution to regional income growth. Furthermore, contribution of improvement of market mechanism to regional development is evidenced in attracting FDI, in promoting export and directly contributing to regional income growth
