Measuring waste in Malaysia: a neglected approach / Mei Lim

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to explore why Full Cost Accounting (FCA) has not been adopted by solid waste management (SWM) in Malaysia. A case study methodology is used for the exploratory research undertaken in this study. Thematic analysis is used and it reveals that lack of regulation is a central barrier to the adoption of FCA. FCA emerges as a supported but little understood concept among participants who are environmentally sensitive. The findings are theorised against Roger’s (1995) innovation-adoption model and revealed that two types of innovations relations to adoption of FCA in SWM in Malaysia. One was the behavioural change aimed at better SWM. The other was the awareness of the need for FCA

Preparation and Characterization of Polypyrrolepolyethylene Glycol Conducting Polymer Composite Films

Polypyrrole-polyethylene glycol (PPy-PEG) conducting polymer composite films were electrochemically prepared on Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) glass electrode from an aqueous solution containing pyrrole monomer, p-toluene sulfonate dopant and poly (ethylene glycol) as an insulating polymer. The PPy-PEG composite films prepared from different process conditions were characterized by Fourier Transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, electrical conductivity measurement, photoacoustic spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and optical microscopy. The FT-IR study of PPy-PEG composite films shows the evidence of the incorporation of PEG in PPy structure forming PPy-PEG composite films. The highest electrical conductivity of 61 S/cm and thermal diffusivity of 7.88 x 10-7 m2s-1 were shown by the PPy-PEG composite film prepared from 0.20 M pyrrole, 0.10 M p-toluene sulfonate and 1 x 10-3 M PEG at 1.20 volt (vs SCE) at room temperature among all the PPy-PEG composite films produced. The conductivity data of PPy-PEG shows that with the increase in PEG concentration in the pyrrole solution, the electrical conductivity of the prepared PPy-PEG film increased up to certain level due to the increase in conjugation length and later it decreased with further increase in PEG concentration, which is again linked with the decrease in conjugation length. The measured values of thermal diffusivity and electrical conductivity for the PPy- PEG composites films showed that there was a correlation between thermal diffusivity and electrical conductivity. Both thermal diffusivity and electrical conductivity showed a similar peak for the same process condition in respective composite films. The XRD results of PPy-PEG composite films showed that the films were amorphous with very little order. The optical micrographs of PPy-PEG showed the globular surface morphology. The changes in globular surface morphology with the change in process condition of the film preparation indicated that the process parameters used to prepare the composite films had a strong influence over the surface morphology

Prevalence Of Mental Health and Its Impact on Employee Productivity

    Get PDF
Mental health is an important component of general well-being; it influences how we think, feel, and conduct. Mental health difficulties are common in the workplace and may have serious consequences for both individuals and companies. It may result in lower productivity, more absenteeism, high turnover rates, legal challenges, and, eventually, a loss of revenue and profits. Employers must acknowledge the significance of mental health in the workplace and give workers with assistance and tools to manage and enhance their mental health, resulting in a more engaged, productive, and loyal workforce that contributes to the organization's success. Employee absenteeism, presenteeism, and work performance may all be severely impacted by mental health. Encourage open communication, provide mental health resources, promote work-life balance, foster a positive work environment, address mental health in employee development, encourage physical activity, regular check-ins, form a wellness committee, review organizational policies and procedures, and lead by example are all strategies to promote mental health in the workplace

    Radiotherapy in Lung Cancer

    Get PDF
Lung cancer remains one of the top five cancers worldwide. Around 85% are nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and only one‐third present with early stage diseases. Radiotherapy had an important role both in radical and palliative treatment. With advancement in technology, newer techniques of stereotactic body radiotherapy allow delivery of much higher biologically effective dose to tumor achieving similar outcomes to radical surgery in early stage diseases. However, the usually large tumor volume together with preexiting poor lung condition makes radiotherapy challenging to deliver a radical dose to tumor while maintaining normal tissue constrains. In this chapter, different indications and techniques used in treating NSCLC will be discussed and reviewed

How Expressiveness of a Robotic Tutor is Perceived by Children in a Learning Environment

    Get PDF
We present a study investigating the expressiveness of two different types of robots in a tutoring task. The robots used were i) the EMYS robot, with facial expression capabilities, and ii) the NAO robot, without facial expressions but able to perform expressive gestures. Preliminary results show that the NAO robot was perceived to be more friendly, pleasant and empathic than the EMYS robot as a tutor in a learning environment

Analisis faktor peringkat kedua terhadap prinsip-prinsip pengurusan kualiti

This empirical study uses second-order factor analysis to test whether a set of quality management principles, synthesised from quality gurus’ philosophies and prominent quality award and quality management system frameworks, together constitute a higher-order factor that may be termed Total Quality Management (TQM). Using survey data collected from educational departments selected randomly from 10 public universities in Malaysia, the LISREL 8 computer program (Jöreskog & Sörbom, 1993) was used to estimate and evaluate the goodness of fit of the proposed second order factor model. The results indicated that the proposed model fits the data adequately, and support the existence of second-order relationship among the quality management principles, adequately, and support the existence of second-order relationship among the quality management principles

This study investigates the impact of various teaching and learning factors on students satisfaction with their degree programme. It applies established theory from customer sutisfaction and educational psychology research to a sample of students. A total of 112 students undertaking undergraduate degree in Human Resource Management were involved in this study. Research results indicate that teaching and learning quality factors were strongly positive related to students satisfaction and explained 31.5 per cent of the variance in students degree programme satisfaction
