    Exotic mesons from quantum chromodynamics with improved gluon and quark actions on the anisotropic lattice

    Hybrid (exotic) mesons, which are important predictions of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), are states of quarks and anti-quarks bound by excited gluons. First principle lattice study of such states would help us understand the role of ``dynamical'' color in low energy QCD and provide valuable information for experimental search for these new particles. In this paper, we apply both improved gluon and quark actions to the hybrid mesons, which might be much more efficient than the previous works in reducing lattice spacing error and finite volume effect. Quenched simulations were done at β=2.6\beta=2.6 and on a ξ=3\xi=3 anisotropic 123×3612^3\times36 lattice using our PC cluster. We obtain 2013±26±712013 \pm 26 \pm 71 MeV for the mass of the 1−+1^{-+} hybrid meson qˉqg{\bar q}qg in the light quark sector, and 4369±37±994369 \pm 37 \pm 99Mev in the charm quark sector; the mass splitting between the 1−+1^{-+} hybrid meson cˉcg{\bar c}c g in the charm quark sector and the spin averaged S-wave charmonium mass is estimated to be 1302±37±991302 \pm 37 \pm 99 MeV. As a byproduct, we obtain 1438±32±571438 \pm 32 \pm 57 MeV for the mass of a P-wave 1++1^{++} uˉu{\bar u}u or dˉd{\bar d}d meson and 1499±28±651499 \pm 28 \pm 65 MeV for the mass of a P-wave 1++1^{++} sˉs{\bar s}s meson, which are comparable to their experimental value 1426 MeV for the f1(1420)f_1(1420) meson. The first error is statistical, and the second one is systematical. The mixing of the hybrid meson with a four quark state is also discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. Published versio

    Robust Preparation of GHZ and W States of Three Distant Atoms

    Schemes to generate Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger(GHZ) and W states of three distant atoms are proposed in this paper. The schemes use the effects of quantum statistics of indistinguishable photons emitted by the atoms inside optical cavities. The advantages of the schemes are their robustness against detection inefficiency and asynchronous emission of the photons. Moreover, in Lamb-Dicke limit, the schemes do not require simultaneous click of the detectors, this makes the schemes more realizable in experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 1 fiure. Phys. Rev.     Aggregated Needs and the Location Choice of Households in Taipei

    This paper examines the impact of aggregated needs of household members on the choice of housing location in Taipei, Taiwan, using a sample of 11,191 households and information collected from the 1990 Census of Population and Housing. Our results indicate that the choice of housing location is significantly affected impacted by the age, family origin, past housing location, education and occupation status, and the location of the workplaces of both spouses. We also find that this decision is more significantly influenced by the attributes of the male spouse than the female. However, among the households with a female household head, the female spouse characteristics are more likely to be significant. Our results also offer a snapshot of today’s Taiwanese culture and shows that it is dramatically different from the commonly believed male-dominated traditional Chinese culture.Aggregated Needs, Location Choice, Probit Model

    Multivariate adaptive regression splines for estimating riverine constituent concentrations

    Regression-based methods are commonly used for riverine constituent concentration/flux estimation, which is essential for guiding water quality protection practices and environmental decision making. This paper developed a multivariate adaptive regression splines model for estimating riverine constituent concentrations (MARS-EC). The process, interpretability and flexibility of the MARS-EC modelling approach, was demonstrated for total nitrogen in the Patuxent River, a major river input to Chesapeake Bay. Model accuracy and uncertainty of the MARS-EC approach was further analysed using nitrate plus nitrite datasets from eight tributary rivers to Chesapeake Bay. Results showed that the MARS-EC approach integrated the advantages of both parametric and nonparametric regression methods, and model accuracy was demonstrated to be superior to the traditionally used ESTIMATOR model. MARS-EC is flexible and allows consideration of auxiliary variables; the variables and interactions can be selected automatically. MARS-EC does not constrain concentration-predictor curves to be constant but rather is able to identify shifts in these curves from mathematical expressions and visual graphics. The MARS-EC approach provides an effective and complementary tool along with existing approaches for estimating riverine constituent concentrations

    Cooperative co-evolution with differential grouping for large scale optimization

    Cooperative co-evolution has been introduced into evolutionary algorithms with the aim of solving increasingly complex optimization problems through a divide-and-conquer paradigm. In theory, the idea of co-adapted subcomponents is desirable for solving large-scale optimization problems. However, in practice, without prior knowledge about the problem, it is not clear how the problem should be decomposed. In this paper, we propose an automatic decomposition strategy called differential grouping that can uncover the underlying interaction structure of the decision variables and form subcomponents such that the interdependence between them is kept to a minimum. We show mathematically how such a decomposition strategy can be derived from a definition of partial separability. The empirical studies show that such near-optimal decomposition can greatly improve the solution quality on large-scale global optimization problems. Finally, we show how such an automated decomposition allows for a better approximation of the contribution of various subcomponents, leading to a more efficient assignment of the computational budget to various subcomponents
