    The clinical role of anesthesia residents during the COVID-19 pandemic has not been well described. As qualified physicians trained in airway management, anesthesia residents could be considered essential personnel. Given the uncertain supply of protective equipment, decision-makers must consider the welfare of trainees in any decision to deploy anesthesia residents. This national survey of Canadian anesthesia residents will develop our understanding of medical education, safety, and perceptions towards training in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Our results may inform the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, program directors, and health officials in optimizing anesthesia residency training during future pandemic conditions

    Irritating CAT tool features that matter to translators

    CAT tools have become a fixture of professional translation over the last two decades yet are still treated with suspicion or disinterest by many freelancers. Acknowledged to contribute to consistency and speed, they can constrain and otherwise negatively affect the translation process in various ways. Surveys of professional translators and observations at the workplace suggest that there is a degree of frustration associated with the use of CAT tools and room for improvement in their usability. A recent large-scale survey of professional translators included specific items for CAT tool users about whether any features of their tools were irritating or missing. Many reported that there were and also availed themselves of the opportunity to provide detailed comments about them. More than half of the CAT tool users said that they found some features irritating, and a quantitative and qualitative analysis of their comments revealed that the most common issues concerned the complexity of the user interface and segmentation. There were some differences in the responses between freelance, institutional and commercial translators but almost none across age groups. The comments about missing features also tended to be about making the tools easier to use. The focus in the survey reported here was on identifying negative aspects of tools with a view to mitigating them and tailoring the tools more to translators’ needs. However, there is also room for research exploring the positive aspects of tools in the interests of optimising their usability and reducing cognitive friction

    Academic libraries have long been discussing the need to remain relevant and demonstrate value to their institutions. This paper explores how academic libraries can expand the concept of embedded librarianship to create research partnerships at universities. Such partnerships will enhance value to the institutional research output, as well as increase the visibility of unique librarian skills and library resources. Using a case study from a public research I university, the author discusses innovative roles for librarians on research teams.     Combining children's savings account programs with scholarship programs: Effects on math and reading scores

    The study examines school data and their association with participation in the Wabash County Promise Scholarships program, which combines Children's Savings Accounts (CSAs) with scholarships. CSAs are interventions designed to build educational assets for school age children. Policy makers are increasingly turning to CSAs as a way to augment efforts for improving children's educational outcomes. Findings from this study provide some evidence that having a CSA combined with a scholarship is associated with higher math and reading scores. Findings are strongest among the subsample receiving free/reduced lunch. Further, findings suggest that being a saver (i.e., having at least one family or champion contribution) in Promise Scholars is associated with higher math scores but not reading scores. Finally, evidence suggests that CSAs combined with scholarships in the Promise Scholars program are more closely associated with children's math and reading scores than only CSAs

    Examining the Relationship between Parental Educational Expectations and a Community-Based Children’s Savings Account Program

    Children’s Savings Account (CSA) program and parents’ educational expectations for their children. We examine survey data collected as part of the rollout and implementation of The Promise Indiana CSA program. Although results differ by parental income and education, results using the full sample suggest that parents are more likely to expect their elementary school-age children to attend college if they have a 529 account or were exposed to the additional aspects of the Promise Indiana program (i.e., the marketing campaign, college and career classroom activities, information about engaging champions, trip to a University, and the opportunity to enroll into The Promise). Parents who were both exposed to the additional aspects of the Promise Indiana program and have a 529 account are over three times more likely to expect their child to attend college than others, increasing to 13 times more likely among parents with no college education. Overall, results suggest a community-based CSA program – Promise Indiana – is associated with nontrivial benefits for families

    Conversation Analysis Based Simulation (CABS): A method for improving communication skills training for healthcare practitioners

    Background: Actors portraying simulated patients are widely used in communication skills training in healthcare, but debates persist over the authenticity of these interactions. However, healthcare professionals value simulation-based training because of the opportunity to think and react in real time, which alternatives cannot provide. // Objective: To describe a method for the use of simulation which maximises authenticity by grounding training in real, observed, patterns of patient communication. // Design: Naturally occurring care interactions were video recorded and analysed using conversation analysis (CA) to identify communication patterns. We focused on sites of recurring interactional trouble as areas for training, and identified more and less effective ways of dealing with these. We used the CA findings to train actors portraying simulated patients, based on the observed interactional patterns. // Settings and Participants: Patients living with dementia and healthcare practitioners (HCPs) on two acute healthcare of the elderly wards in the English East Midlands. // Outcome Measures: One month later HCPs reported using the skills learned in clinical practice. Masked-ratings of before and after simulated patient encounters confirmed these self-reports in relation to one key area of training. // Results: The Conversation Analysis Based Simulation (CABS) method used in this setting showed positive results across a range of quantitative and qualitative outcome measures. What is significant for the transferability of the method is that qualitative feedback from trainees highlighted the ability of the method to not only illuminate their existing effective practices, but to understand why these were effective and be able to articulate them to others. // Discussion/Conclusion: While the CABS method was piloted in the dementia care setting described here, it has potential applicability across healthcare settings where simulated consultations are used in communication skills training. Grounding simulated interaction in the observed communication patterns of real patients is an important means of maximising authenticity. // Patient and Public Contribution: The VideOing to Improve dementia Communication Education (VOICE) intervention which piloted the CABS method was developed by a multidisciplinary team, including three carers of people with dementia. People living with dementia were involved in the rating of the before and after video simulation assessments

The notion is substantiated in the literature that participation in treatment decisions can prepare youth for making their own decisions as adults, can be therapeutic, and can have positive effects on their self-confidence and self-esteem. Still, the complex youth–family–provider dynamic raises important issues that need to be addressed before SDM can be successfully implemented

    Bioluminescence imaging reveals inhibition of tumor cell proliferation by Alzheimer's amyloid β protein

    Background: Cancer and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are two seemingly distinct diseases and rarely occur simultaneously in patients. To explore molecular determinants differentiating pathogenic routes towards AD or cancer, we investigate the role of amyloid β protein (Aβ) on multiple tumor cell lines that are stably expressing luciferase (human glioblastoma U87; human breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB231; and mouse melanoma B16F). Results: Quantification of the photons emitted from the MDA-MB231 or B16F cells revealed a significant inhibition of cell proliferation by the conditioning media (CM) derived from amyloid precursor protein (APP) over-expressing cells. The inhibition of U87 cells was observed only after the media was conditioned for longer than 2 days with APP over-expressing cells. Conclusion: Our results suggest that Aβ plays an inhibitory role in tumor cell proliferation; this effect could depend on the type of tumor cells and amount of Aβ
